BOTM 11: Byzantium

Back to an easy level this time. Wonder if we'll get more submissions than we got in BOTM 10... :mischief:

Game Details:

Game settings:
Civilization: Byzantium (Leader: Justinian I; Traits: Spiritual and Imperialistic)
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Warlord
Map: Custom continents.
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
Options: No goody huts.
Victory Conditions: all enabled

Justinian I:
Justinian I is Spiritual and Imperialistic, and the Byzantines start with mysticism and the wheel. Spiritual gives double production speed of temples, and instant civic/religion changes, without anarchy. Imperialistic gives +100% great general emergence and 50% faster settler production.

Unique unit: Cataphract (replaces knight)
The cataphract is stronger than a knight - 12 strength instead of 10, although the downside is that the cataphract loses the knight's immunity to first strikes. Neither unit gets defensive bonuses, and both get flank attack against catapults and trebuchets, and require horses and iron to build.

Unique building: Hippodrome(replaces theatre
Like the theatre, the hippodrome gives +3 culture per turn to a city. The additional bonuses of a hippodrome is that it gives an extra happy citizen off the bat, plus another happy citizen if you have horses, and an additional happy citizen for every 5% culture (for a theatre, it's every 10%). However, it's not all good: The hippodrome doesn't give any additional happiness from dyes, and - unlike the theatre - it can't turn any citizens into artists.

This is the start of the game (click for a bigger image):

Adventurer Class bonuses:
 1. Fishing: You start knowing fishing,
 2. Agriculture You start knowing agriculture too!

Challenger Class Equalisers:
A hurricane has blown through the lands and destroyed everything.
 1. No warrior The warrior is dead.
 2. No techs: All your educated people were gathered in the main tent having a feast. The tent got blown over so they're all dead.

To Enter the Competition:

This competition will open on 15 October 2008. From that date, you'll be able to get the starting saves here (Obviously, this link won't work until that date). Use the same URL to submit your completed entry, which you must do by 15 November 2008.

Civ version

This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Warlords or vanilla Civ), patched to version 3.17. It must also be played with the HOF mod version 3.17.001. Note that for game security reasons this HOF mod version requires you to be logged in with an account that has admin privileges when you are playing for your game to be a valid entry to the GOTM competition. You'll see a warning dialog if you attempt to start a session without appropriate privileges.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Warlord again! That must mean it's time for another training exercise. I'm inspired to try for my first ever Religious victory. I've no idea how it works and I've never even built the AP.

nokem's challenge is therefore:
1. Build the Apostolic Palace
2. Win a religious victory by fair means or foul

I guess a Theology slingshot followed by beeline to Optics would be in order.

Why waste Byzantium on Warlord?..

^Can you enlighten us about why is this civ/leader so better than other options? What I could ask is "why waste such good starting area on Warlord", but I definitely won't complain.:p

Undecided on VC, considering Cultural or Conquest, but certainly settling southward by the river and leaving the foodrich north for the GP farm.

Options: No goody huts.

WHEREISOURGOLDTHISTIME?

"What difficulty level do you think Byzantium is suitable for to maximize the fun factor?"

as I can suppose Lexad' unswer should sounds like: deity or higher ;)

I wonder if it's possible to get a guilds slingshot on Warlord?
Pity Justinian isn't philosophical for early GE farming.

I'm tending to settle 2N for a perfect GP farm capital (7 specialists at size 10, if I counted right). Production isn't great but should suffice. OCC conquest anyone? :D

@Conquistador (and Erik too, ofc)
Well, for Immortal at least it'd be great :) - great UU, great UB (for Happiness with culture slider).

I do not even know, what Gauntlet condition to propose for Warlord - maybe, Space Colony? It'd be faster at Normal speed.

Options: No goody huts.

WHEREISOURGOLDTHISTIME?
You wanted to say, where are our free settlers? :) Thanx heavens, this option is removed.

I doubt that it'd that good at Deity - AI rush to lower part of techtree, do not want to compete for the unit that cannot ignore walls.

So, which is better:
Settle the capital to the south and second city (GP farm) to the north.
-or-
Settle the capital (GP farm) to the north and second city someplace else.

I mean AlanH' princely gesture in GOTM35 :)

And I really forgot about settlers from a hut at levels lower Noble.

Lets imagine DS announcement: There were two huts in the start position and I popped 2 settlers for you! :crazyeye:

PS it seems 1 settler and 1 worker should be better than 2 settlers ;)

Why not NE-N? Coastal, 2 PH plus all the food?
Uhm...I need new glasses. NNE is better of course :crazyeye:

@Markus5: The question isn't what is "better", but whether you want your capital as GP farm or bureaucracy powerhouse. As for pure early power, hardly anything can beat 3x6f tiles + 2 PH + coast lake. (Though the lack of commerce calls for early Caste Sytem.)

This one can be a good game for my reenter in xotM competition.
The UU is one of the most powerful.

Usually i don't like my capital as a GP farm, but i'll see.
In case i'll look for a higher production site, leaving room for a good GP farm.

CS sling is the minimum, even without gold.

Oh I did, but then I didn't pay them enough so they deserted and joined the nearest AI. Last I heard they were training in the AI's modern armour division. I'm sure you'll meet them soon enough... ;)

Why waste Byzantium on Warlord?..

To judge from the number of entries in the vanilla warlord-level GOTM a couple of months ago, I'd say there's quite a lot of people who appreciate lower level games. I'm sure those people are just as deserving of a good civ (whatever one of those is) as the more, ummm, 'advanced' players. :)

A most likely winnable game. See if I can do a three headed religion hydra in the capital and go for a cultural win. On a test game a while back I was able to get Divine Rights from the Oracle but it is safer and better suited to go for the CS sling and use the second GP to get DR.

If the warrior does not find coastal gold, we will settle to south and go after the first religion and may build a settler for a change. Hope some of the building material is nearby for an attempt at wonder hogging, :) Thired city will be the GP to north.

I'll beeline Alpha and trade my way up the tech tree... wait! Alpha is useless at this level! :crazyeye:

I really don't know how to play this. I guess I'll explore for one turn or eleven. CS-sling for sure, so I'm not settling the capital as a GPFarm.

Thanks for No-Goody-Huts!!!!!!!!! :goodjob:
