Congrats to all winners and especially to me - it's my first gold in BOTM!

Congrats to all awarded players! Good times! :goodjob:

Thanx to the staff for nice cristmas game!

They say 4th place is 1st loser - but with my highly suboptimal and sloppy game, I couldn't be happier! :D

Congratulations to the *real* winners though. ;) :goodjob:

Congratulations to the winners!!!
Nice challenge of a map!!!

Great fun, I learnt a lot too :)

Now, I am behind Jeffa and Gosha190 in the heptathon race

Congrats to all the winners and thanks to the staff for a fun game set up, I ran out of time but had a blast with how far I did get.:goodjob:

Yep, congrats from me too! I was very pleased with how many people did manage to win what I thought would be a difficult game. And very pleased that we got a spaceship win - thanks Jeffa :) as well as a couple of culture wins - to balance all the people going for military strategies.

Woohoo :D

Not quite the award anyone's playing for, I'm sure, but I'm glad I didn't quit in frustration :D

And a big congrats to the winners (and damn, how DO you do that :) )

-------

I also officially hate losers now :p (since they do submit, and, "[Adventurer: ] To qualify for this class, you must not have finished in the top half of the field in any Civ4 GOTM. ")

Congrats everyone who endured this game, especially those who managed to win it!

At least the green ambulance was within reach for me... if the Dutch pulled off their culture win about 5 turns earlier, it was mine.:lol:

It was actually a very exciting race: conquest or culture defeat. Aerial bombarment of every improvement, city sizes rapidly starving to size 1 for every city, and a stack of Paras/Marines/Tanks running rampant on my continent. Its amazing how fast a score can drop!

Here's where everyone settled.

Interesting that most wins came from moving the settler to the hill, or to the forest 1S. I'm not sure how much that's because of any inherent advantage of those positions and how much it's because of stronger players tending to move there anyway.

The Small Print:
The numbers by each player's name indicate the turn settled on (starting turn is 0). Players are colour coded by game class (challenger=red, adventurer=blue). Symbols indicate victory condition, if there's no symbol then the player either retired or was defeated. The yellow border indicates the land that was visible at the start of the game.

Thanks to the staff for an interesting (if sometimes frustrating!) variation.

I still don't have the monomaniacal focus needed to win really fast, but it was challenging and a lot of fun.

Cheers!

I just wish i had settled to get both gems, and had found the second island in the middle. so many regrets.....

but I enjoyed playing the game and the fact that all the AIs at once couldn't (quite) manage to kill me

So thanks once again to the XOTM team!

I moved to the hil because of extra defense for always war.

If i'd have known it was an one civ island............

Same for me on both counts. I am actually suprised that so many winners took the same spot. (And I don't feel so stupid for it anymore:lol:) The whole game I felt like I was diasadvantaged by that selection. Mostly because the Cap was the only city on first landmass with any type of hammer production, but couldn't build sea units. It was a very good city, but all the other ones were very slow. I obviously need more practise with the whip. Maybe I should have overlapped more to borrow some hills, too.

Since I usually play above this level, it never even occured to me to do an archer rush. With this map set-up, axe-rush was obsolete by the time it was available, and sword rush was all that was left me. Much too late for this game.

Very good job by all those who won this one.:goodjob:

You can get a high production coastal city by the hills and floodplains in the SW - that shouldn't overlap much with your capital on the central hill. Did you not put a city there?

Oh, yeah... my second city was due south on the coast and it performed pretty well. Then I spent some time making settlements to acquire resources (horses and iron) after which my mainland expeditionary adventures delayed further settling of the homeland. I did not really develop the island more than that until I was rejected from the mainland... at which time the outcome was no longer in doubt.

Basically, I made a lot of early strategic choices that were inappropriate for map and game settings, and wasn't a skilled enough player to overcome those.

I would like the receipt so that I can return your crappy Christmas present for a full refund. :p

Fantastic map. Kudos to DS, all the winners, and all who played. It is going to be hard to top this one DS, but I can't wait to see you try... ;)
