[BTS] News: BOTM 174 Isabella Deity Results and Congratulations

Hmm yep i admit that i have serious motivation problems on diffs lower than Imm.
I remember a rather difficult Boudi Imm game (from kcd swede?), really liked that one, but did not finish Emp or lower for years.
+ feels somehow wrong if i would steal medals for those, not sure..just dun like that feeling.

Many good points by @lymond
Especially "I would not want them to do this at the expense of getting burned out on mapmaking." ! A tremendeous job is done as it is.

I do agree alot with @Fippy though, I have big motivation problems on lower difficulty too. I understand that many find great motivation in the challenge of executing a perfectly played game on lower difficulty HOF-style, but I personally have a hard time doing that.
Have gotten my ass handed to me in both the pericles and now this Isabella maps, and that it can so easily swing that way is what make it interesting for me.

Krikav makes great points, imo the whole reason why we play deity (outside gotm and so) is that everything can go wrong within few turns.
I never fully agreed with "deity allows fewer strategies", i have done so many different plays including even chariot rushes, they are just much more difficult and sometimes you have to abandon your ideas and make new ones :)

Maybe i should also mention that i played a lot of multiplayer in other games, and among those communities AIs are usually laughed at.
So when i win easily against AIs, i can never get fully rid of a certain letdown feeling.

On lower levels you basically HA rush for military victories 80-90% of the time as that makes the most sense unless you are playing Egypt. Space race is what I find really challenging. Maintaining tech pace while conquering in every phase of the game without any help from the AIs.

Emp+ difficulty is actually more forgiving for Space Race as you can recover the lost teching in the early and on Deity even mid game through trades and competent vassal teching. On low levels, it is forever gone, no way to recover since you can only get one tech per turn when you have your developed 40+ cities.

I think there is space for lower levels to be interesting for military victories as well, but you need much more map cooking for that. Not investing into scouting should be punished.

No, I'm not even arguing the merits of deity/non-deity games. I've been through all that before...well, I should say I've seen it all before - honestly I have no argument against Deity games at all...I enjoy a good Deity map. I realize that there are those that prefer deity only, and I fully understand the reasons behind it. As I said, it's more a personal thing...a personal challenge. What I am talkin' about is a change in perspective. Play a non-deity BOTM from time to time. Play with others. Have fun. The fact of the matter is there will always non-deity BOTMs.

The change in perspective is setting different types of goals for other games. Winning X victory condition by Y date, or exceed Z score. Try to get a cow now and then. It's rare that a sub-deity game is going to offer the kind of challenge you get or want from a Deity game - there is no argument in that and it is far from the point I am making - but what I'm talking about here is setting your own challenges. Whether noble, prince, emperor, immortal ..whatevah...set your own goals. Enjoy the different maps and tweaks the mapmakers often include. Enjoy playing along with others. Win a nude dude statue. Just have fun.

Anyway, there is no argument here. It is only a suggestion. I'd like to see more good players, play more GOTMs.

oh..i missed a post up there. I wouldn't worry about 'stealing' medals from others. The reverse psychology here  is you and other great players are setting the challenge for others. It's up to the others to up their game. And anyway, you can only win one medal + maybe one award per game + maybe cow. Plenty left over for others to achieve.
