News: BOTM 27 - Starts 17 February

According to the map creation guide, Arboria is like Pangaea in that it still has coast - maybe still some seafood resources on the coasts.

Does it have all other normal resources?

Yes, it has seafood on the coast. Not a lot, but some.

Does not usually have gold. Copper is pretty rare. Deer everywhere. I did not notice anything else obvious.

This looks promising ...

1) Settle on the Dye
2a) Build Worker
... (I toyed with the idea of settling in place and building settler first)
2b) Research Camp then head for Bronze Working
3) Spawn busting with scouts until the fighters show up
4) Then, dunno ...
... me thinks deer are the flood plains of the forest
... me thinks religious zealots and manifest destiny

:goodjob:

There are generally very few hills, lots of rivers and almost every land tile is grassland. I find the forests under the deers are valuable sources of hammers from what are otherwise food sources.

The AI puts alot of workshops down to compensate, I've seen BFC's that are either workshops or deer when scouting AI lands.

I wonder if pooping a couple of Great Prophets and settling them would add valuable extra hammers in the early game?

Do not know how it is now, but traditionally difficulty level cycle. So, yes, I would expect next one will be deity and dropping down to low one for one after next.

Yeah I was just wondering with the new different difficulty based save scheme, dammit hehe, means I actually have to play an Immortal game and get mashed :)

What is up with the Barbs? Did three test games just hitting "next turn" and in none of the games a barbarian had entered the borders until 1800 BC. I stopped all games at this point.

I expected the barbarian onslaught much earlier. Just luck in this games or is there something special with this scenario?

I'm looking forward to this game. Hatche is one of my personal favorites. Do we have horses in the Fat Cross and all rivals are within a 7 tile range  ?

Srad, did you build another city in amongst all the end-turning? Isnt there a 'has x number of cities' benchmark for barbarians to start becoming agressive early on?

^ That's right. It's dependent on average number of cities per civ, so that would stay low with only 3 AI in the game. Especially if you're just hitting enter and not founding cities yourself. Check this out:

I need more info:

- What's the city center output of a river city on dyes?
- What's the city center output for settling on the deer?
- What's the output of the visible deer tile, once camped? 4-1-0 or 5-1-0?
- Last, but not least, what's the distance to the AIs? :p

I'm not sure what to do with the warrior to help the settler decide where to settle. My two options are 1W and 1SW and the settler will move 1S first before heading for one of those tiles.

I have only 10 days to finish the game, I'm afraid I won't make it.

- The deer tile is 5F 1H 0C camped (if forests unchopped)
- Settling on the riverside dye gives 2F 1H 2C
- Settling on deer gives 3F 1H 1C

I'd go for settling on the dye for the commerce, and to save the deer as a rather good tile. I think settling on the dye and working the deer is better than settling the deer and working any other tile.

Can anyone convince that settling on the deer is better?

Initially move settler 1S and warrior W or NW. This will reveal two tiles outside the BFC if settling ON the dye. If there is more deer (or something) in those tiles, 1S looks more attractive.

Settling on dye: extra commerce in center, doesnt waste a forest, three more unknown tiles.

Settling 1S of dye: faster worker by having deer in inner ring, can work dye later, at least 1 less mountain in the BFC (unlikely to matter)

Honestly, with the unimproved tile yielding 3:food:1:hammers: and the camp adding 2:food:, and losing the riverside advantage, settling on the deer sounds like a really bad idea.

Even if you do not play for score? going for religion or something could be reasonably fast :p

Settling on Dyes has three advantages:
- 1 extra commerce from the city center;
- it is certain that you don't settle on copper or iron;
- in the long run, a worked Dye tile is not all that great.

Settling on a Deer is not a good idea. The effect, depending on the other tiles, of getting your first Worker out faster pales against the permanent loss of 2 food.

Settling on the dye will "hook up" a single dye, as if you had built a Plantation and a Road on it ...

... once you have the Calendar technology.

The extra +1 :commerce: in the city's tile is immediate.

Hi, I'm new to Civ IV, BTS, and the BOTM, but I thought I'd give the BOTM a whirl this month. Probably will die early! :)
Just one technical question. If I currently have BUG 4.2 mod installed do I first have to uninstall that before installing BUFFY 3.19.003?

Welcome to the forums and the BOTM competition! You do not need to uninstall BUG 4.2, as the mods install into separate folders. Good luck with your game!

Think I need to do the test again. Didn't settled another city.

Thanks for the link!

We've now confirmed that this game will be played with BUFFY-3.19.003, and I've now altered the starting post of this thread to give the instructions and links.

And for Mac players - starting with this game, you can at last play BOTMs! You need to download MACBUFFY, again the link is now in the first post.
