News: BOTM 93 Starts Aug 15

When in World Builder, in modify terrain mode, there is a button to Regenerate the Map. It keeps the settings and AIs while regenerating all the terrain. Very handy.

Tks for all your kind answers, Deckhand & Dhoomstriker. If at all possible, could you pls point me to a thread where the rules for sea resource appearance are revealed? Something like "clams will not appear at more than 40 degree latitude" or so. I'm wondering whether those codes are different for each map type or not...

On a "normal" map, if there is such a thing, where you expect to see Ice terrain near the far north and far south of the map, you'll be more likely to find Crab Resources closer to the poles, transitioning into Clam Resources closer to the more central latitudes.

Fish Resources not not seem to be affected by latitude and will appear at pretty much any latitude.

I'm pretty sure that Crab Resources and Clam Resources generally (always?) are Coastal Resources, while Fish tend toward being Ocean Resources, although you can also sometimes find Coastal Fish Resources (dubbed "Magical Fish" Resources due to them provided the same +1 Commerce that Coastal Crab or Coastal Clam will provide but providing an additional +1 Food on top of what Crab and Clam provide).

As an example, I just generated a map and in the southern hemisphere, I had Crab on one square and Clam on the square 1N of there. Since Fish can and will appear in any latitude, it should not be too hard to believe that a Fish Resource could feasibly fall in the same big fat cross as that Crab and Clam.

Also, the map generator will add Food-based Resources to most players' starting spots (including the AIs' starting spots), so a player starting near the Crab + Clam start might get a free Fish Resource tossed in without help from a Map Maker, as one example.

Whale Resources will also tend to appear closer to the poles, as will Fur Resources, Silver Resources, and Deer Resources.

Certain Resource types generally don't appear on certain terrain types... I don't recall ever seeing Ice Horses (just Ice Archers, for those in the know), nor do I recall seeing Plains Hills Horses. I also don't think that I've seen Desert Horses.

But, different map types (the Fantasy map script comes to mind) and different climate settings (Temperate, Tropical, Arid, Cold, etc) can also alter the balance of Resource distribution.

Whoops... Dhoom, You. Are. The. Girl! :D Thank you very much, I'm pretty relieved.
BTW,
Settling on top of the Spice is a decent idea. Sure, you will miss out on the P Cow, but you will pick up a Coastal Crab. And, you'll still keep that Copper/Iron/Coal/whatever on the GH to the SE + S of the P Cow.

Where did you get all this wonderful knowledge??

Right here on the forums.

You can check out Strategy & Tips to get in-depth knowledge about the game, game reports from other players, and general strategic and tactical advice.

One approach is to simply frequent that forum, read the interesting-sounding messages, ask questions, and contribute your knowledge as you gain it.

Another approach is to use the Search functionality of these forums, and you can reveal all sorts of fascinating and in-depth knowledge about Civ 4 (and about other games hosted on these forums).

Don't forget to read the articles in the War Academy. Some of the articles there were written for Civ 4 Vanilla (the name that we use for this game when you aren't playing with an expansion pack), rather than for Civ 4 Beyond the Sword, so it's possible that a few things have changed since an article was written, but the advice and ideas are quite sound.

Oh, and don't miss the Civ 4 Strategy Articles sub-forum of the Strategy & Tips forum. There, you will find a wealth of information (some of those artciles are mirrored in the War Academy), including the recent "CIV Illustrated" series, which is a series of threads that go into detail about useful Civ 4 topics. You won't be disappointed! :)

That must be very common magic in that case, 'cause I see coastal fish frequently. Level 1 magic, perhaps

There could have been a city here to cgrab all resources. There isn't, but given the distribution, I suppose it's possible without rigging the map.

@Dhoom: again, my appreciation :)
Actually, I did spent some considerable time in Strategies & tips and Civ 4 strategy articles. But since I used the filter options of the forum & only read those topics with the most views or most replies, I must have overlooked lots of interesting knowledge.
Using the Search function usually doesn't yield much info. Like when I searched for "resources appearance code", the result seems to consist of mods only: http://forums.civfanatics.com/search.php?searchid=2798290
But no problem, since you do frequent the forums, when facing a problem I can just ask a question & then count on you, right? ;)
BTW, Civ illustrated is much better than the last time I saw it. Those guys sure did a great job.

It looks like a fun game. Maybe I should stop working and go home and play. Sounds like easy warmup for next months game.

@Staff, I noticed a BOTM94 page and save on the gotm site, but there doesn't seem to be a corresponding announcement thread.

Deity, folks!
