News: COTM30 Pre-Game Discussion

I've updated the first post with the Conquest and Predator level changes. Due to festivities tonight (Trick-or-Treating and such) the Save files might be a little delayed, but they should be available sometime tonight. Happy Halloween!

I suppose they do. But surely we won't have access to horses on our continent. Otherwise what is the point of the samurai? In the hands of the human player, it's really no better than the knight.
well samurai is quite good unit, it's better than knight.it's defence of four is quite useful, emperor AI's has more offensive units than say monarch, so +1 defence is quite useful on emperor

Oh I always feel aggreived by offensive units with extra defensive points, and vice versa. Units I love to hate are the baby bowman, the musket, the PtW cossack, the legion, the samurai, etc etc. I don't even like the knight: too many shields, paying for defensive points that I don't want. If I'm going to get attacked, then I should have brought pikes along.
So increasing the defense even more doesn't impress me. But we'll see if there is a specific use for them in this game. The Russian COTM managed to make the cossack blitz seem like a useful upgrade, so anything is possible. And I have traditionally done badly at emperor level C3C...

The only advantage I see is the redundancy of horses. It might fit a game without horses (like that America Gotm?) to prevent these upgrade excesses that usually formed quick conquest games. :old:

The predator handicaps are longing for some research game - the AI might finally contribute... :crazyeye:

I might be tempted to try for Predator Diplomacy... :hmm:

Ah well, short-rushing it is then ;)

All done with Hammurabi & GOTM 60, just in time to start on this one.

Let's see Japan: Militaristic & Religious, starts with the Wheel (horses visible) & Ceremonial Burial, cheap barracks, harbors & temples, UU is the great Samurai (4-4-2) needs iron, but not horses and replaces the Knight.

With this start I think I'll try to set up Kyoto to pop out settlers, so research will start with pottery and then depending on how many AI started with writing go for the Republic slinghot. If the slingshot looks unlikely, I'll head up Myst to Poly and Monarchy. After a couple of scouting/MP warriors Kyoto will need a temple as Emperor only gets 1 content citizen and I hate using my income to keep my minions from rioting. Ciites 2 & 3 will start with a barracks then hopefully chariots/horsemen if there's a horse nearby.

The plan will be to try and take most of the home continent in the AA, leaving only any SCI tribes to get there free techs. Once the home island is secure, I'll try for a MA GA using Sun Tzu & Bach to kick it off. With luck I'll be able to speed through the rest of the MA and get to the IA with a solid tech lead. Then hurry research through the IA and time the TOE to net Fission and using a perfectly timed pre-build finish the UN and get elected world leader.

Now all I have to do is play the game.

In the short term you are spending 30 shields to get some extra culture: 1 smilie from lux and 1 temple both cost you 1gpt. But if it fits the capital build plan (i.e. a 30-shield slot that couldn't be split into axe+archer and no strat resource hooked) I would consider it too.

PB: Good point, I'll have to reconsider my start. I'm hoping for a peaceful first QSC period. If I find a nasty neighbor, that temple will quickly become a barracks.

Righto, after getting my first two results from GOTM and aquiring two of the "see me after class" shields, I've decided to go for a straight domination win since REX and early conquest seem to make research and culture games an easier proposition. I reckon my weakness has been a lack of micromanaging in the opening plays - so we'll see how this one goes.

Predator - of course. I may be inept but I still have my pride.:p

Having a poke about at QSC submissions. Also got a hold of CivAssist 2, which should help a lot. Damn good thing that and kudos to the man that designed it.
