COTM 31: Aztecs

Looking back over COTM history, we've never played the Aztecs! Well here's your chance. And since it's the last COTM for 2006, I thought we'd do a few 'special' things with it. First, we'll up the map size to Large, and to accomodate some extra playing time, the deadline to submit will be extended into January an extra week. (GOTM62 will probably be a smaller map to give players who play both competitions a break.) Next, what the heck, I'll give you an established capital! Here it is -

Oops - it's been captured by the Spanish and it's defended by at least 1 Conquistador! I'm still testing whether this will be their actual capital or not, but they will start at peace with you and their expansion capabilities will be limited; no ability to build Settlers with either a small set of Settler units or established cities or a mix.

And there will be 11 AI civs in the game; some will be 'normal' AI, and others will start stronger but be expansion limited like the Spanish; similar to the minor civs concept from a couple of years ago.

Here are your game stats:

Civilization: Aztecs
Rivals: 11 pre-selected.
Barbarians: Roaming
Difficulty: Emperor
Land Form: Pangaea, 70% ocean, Large map.
Geology:3 billion years old, Wet and Warm.
AI Aggression: Normal.

The starting location shows a Hut, but I may delete that.

Conquest-Class Bonuses:
  1. TBD

Predator-Class Equalisers:
  1. TBD

That looks like a little more than 1 unit in Teotihuacan . Maybe they are all workers that the Spanish will offer us right away in appeasement :mischief:.

I don't see any reason to move our settler - it's just a matter of working the spreadsheet to figure out how to get the 4-turner operational ASAP (assuming there is any empty space around us to plop down more settlers :scared:).

Looks interesting...

Kind of unsure what to do.

Chamnix do you see any more bonuses? I only see one which is not enough for a 4-turner, or are you thinking of early recapture of the capital? But we don't know how far away it is (and a Conq is not weak...)

That's a 4-turner. Aztecs are agricultural in conquests. - with the 3 BG's, you can get 7 shields at size 4 and 8 at size 5.

Recapturing it will be tough... conquistidors are like AC, but with 1 fewer hit, and the ability to go anywhere...

I forgot about the Agr bonus, we haven't had an Agr civ for so long in a COTM that I totally forgot about that...

@AutomatedTeller--speaking of AC, our old capital is a prime location for the Statue of Zeus.

If the Spanish already have conqs, does this mean that we are starting in the MA, or is this a traditional AA start?

interesting scenario. dbear, looking at the fact that Spain is building a warrior, I guess we start in the AA.

It's a traditional 4000 BC start. And Spain can not build any additional Conquistadors. I'm thinking about setting Spain to building 'Wealth' often; the result should be a nice Gold prize when Teotihuacan is recaptured, but of course that will require some effort depending on the units defending it. There may be other 'advanced' units in some of the other minor AI civ's starting unit list, but no ability to build more.

At leat one conq???????  It looks like 8!!! And Conqs are 3/2/2, so I'd think you would need archer load or swords to take em out. Also, what's the point of the capital? Could I leave it for whole game??

The jag warrior is limited if Spain starts with conqs. On the other hand, they will build SOZ if left alone for a while. If we have iron, I'm going at them with swords. 10 other rivals could be easy pickings for a small stack. My build order is jaguar, regular, jaguar settler, jaguar, jaguar. 4 jags go off to nearest opponent. There is good land around start square, so I will settle in place. My next city will be N or NE, due to jungle in SE, and mountains in W. Worker to NE BG or game.

I think I'll play some sort of science game. The minor civs should be fast researchers at the start of the game which might help boost the research rate. I reckon I'll leave the minor civs largely unmolested given that their expansion is limited by the number of settlers they start with [have I got that right?]. If I were to go for a race to space then they should be relatively easy to knock out by the modern age, given that with any luck I'll have plenty of cities by then. So I'll concentrate my war efforts on the proper civs first...assuming that I can tell which ones those are.

The minor civs (at least 1, and Spain is included in this category) will not be able to build Settlers, and will have a starting set of Settlers and/or cities that defines their maximum native city limit (they can expand by conquest). They also start with a defined # of extra units - in Spain's case they have a stack of units in Teotihuacan (which BTW will not be their capital) with at least 2 Conquistadors (I'll give you that much).

The majority of the AI will be standard. Enjoy! :)

Rather looking forward to this. Going to try a moo game this time - my base scores seem to be letting me down here.

If a balky shoulder & a cultural Iroquois game ever cooperate, I'll jump into this one. A question though, since this is C3C and a large map, is the 100K culture limit still 100K?

Unfortunately it is. :( I used a Standard sized biq file to generate the map from, and the 100K limit wasn't increased. Probably a handful of other parameters as well. Clearly something that can't be modified at this point so we'll leave the saves as they are.
