News: GOTM 19 Pre-game Discussion

Also, diplomacy-wise Agressive AI mean just extra hidden -2 in relations; there are AI willing to trade at Annoyed (Musa) or enough well-disposed towards human player (Gandhi etc) to be Cautious with him despite -2. After 25 turns extra +1 for years of peace will kick in to help in relations. No, tech trading is still prospective.

You could also try to get a religion to spread to you (by setting up trade routes) and then convert to it to make a couple of friends. At least if the distribution of religions is somewhat favorable....

to see what the blue circles look like for adventurer?

Can't remember if that is done? Can you send it to me by PM if possible?

tia

No way I do this regular style, but if I was settling the west blue circle might have some appeal. You still get the cows and I'd bet a 50/50 shot of getting a fish or something like that.

I have a feeling that the blue circles in HOF mods are modified so that it doesn't reflect the impact of hidden resources (although it will still not show on a hidden resource directly). That possibly explains sometimes that we see a blue circle 1W, moved there, and found the blue circle back to the initial starting place. So maybe it is better believe your eye than the blue circle now.

As a ‘noob’ having never played Emperor, this thread is very enlightening and helpful.

I suspect that anyone brave enough to try (and succeed) in a cultural victory would win a medal (eight rival AI’s with extra aggressive tendencies). So, maybe a spaceship victory or a conquest/domination path is called for.

SO many helpful posts for us ‘noobs’. Thanks to Aged One for the question and LowertheCastle (LtC) for the answer as to how to find time for Civ IV – I enjoyed that humor. And I will side with Kuukkeli in that I should probably elect Adventurer since this will be my first ‘true’ attempt at a GOTM and it’s on Emperor … I enjoyed the elaboration (and would have liked even more) on Vulcan’s first post – great questions for this scenario. And after Erkon’s and Aborigen’s (et. al.) posts, I tried to figure out what techs were necessary to build those “slingshot” units … Just Kidding (j/k), great informative posts. Thanks to Lexad (and LtC’s clarification) of the +2 gpt for foreign trade routes and the tip re: roading to possible rivers (after Open Borders –OB – I presume). My favorite tip was in the closing of LtC’s post above “Probably the worse thing you can do is mix strategies. Which is what I usually do... “ Now, that’s good advice!

Seems like several alternatives, from all out early ( I mean “EARLY”) warmongering, and/or the assault on the Oracle slingshot (in either case, even to the extent of foregoing Animal Husbandry and the Cow bonuses), to those who will play a longer game and try to exploit fully the Philosophical trait and its attendant GP potentialiaties. Since I am not yet experienced at any of these areas, I’ll definitely enjoy the spoilers as to how it was done as much as the pre-game show. I wonder if the game lends itself more to one approach than another with this setup. Thanks again to everyone for steering us noobs in the right direction and providing informative posts, which like this one, are meant for entertainment purposes only, and not intended to foster belief in Civ IV as a way-of-life, meaning I have to get back to my RL job now ….

Just play a few more GOTMs and we'll help you re-orient your unenlightened misperceptions. When your boss offers to pay you triple if you quit Civving, then you know priorities have become well balanced.

Speaking about trade routes - that's the way of getting extra 2 commerce just with building several road squares connecting your capital and next city. You don't even need OB. Learnt this in SGOTM-1 from Dynamic.

I'll have to yield to your experienced ways here again: So far, I've only gotten them up to "you can keep your job." However, I suspect that when GOTM 19 is released this week, and my production drops further still, they'll come around to your way of thinking ... LOL ! ;)

Haven't played with china in some time. Tried out some cho stuff. It seems that Chos on this level are really hard to employ.

Against high % (and likely highly occupied) cities chos alone are a 1 to 1 tradeoff. On the outskirts where the low % cities are the AI doesn't put enough troops to make it worth their time as the whole point is to inflict collateral damage for your other troops to mop up. The other question is what to use insofar as experience upgrades if in fact you have any that survive?

It seems the best tactic is to pair chos and cats to knock down the % and then maybe one suicide cat and then open up with chos. Problem being these are two divergent tech paths and will take some time to develop.

Very likely I'll do the ole multiplayer axe rush because of the plentiful trees surrounding the city site and try to catch a nearby AI or two early.

When the AI upgrades I'll try the cho+cat rush for a couple more and then try to hang on.

I started playing with aggressive AI in my own games before the boost to AI strategy in Warlords in an attempt to make some of my games more interesting and haven't stopped since - I think it makes the game a lot more fun. It does keep you more "honest", especially with aggressive neighbors, but emperor barbs are going to do that anyway. The frequency of getting wardec'd can be predictable enough (and also isn't necessarily that much higher) that sometimes you can turn it to diplomatic advantage and provoke a war without having to declare it.
Oh, and speaking of diplomacy, the AI definitely wardecs each other a lot more, and they will then also ask you to join them more often, making for a tricky diplomatic situation. Crowded maps make for even more convoluted diplomatic situations. Try 18 civs with aggressive AI on a huge terra map for some real fireworks...:p

Looks like a real challenge for my first CIV GOTM. (Hi btw! Really great forum/site). I've not played with aggressive AI before, so I have a quick question for those who have: How does the -2 relations affect worker steals?

A crowded map on which we're planning an early war sounds like a perfect worker stealing situation to me. But in a few random-map starts over the last few days I've noticed a serious problem. The AI will not make peace!

Sure they'll agree peace if I kill an archer for no loss myself. But more usually I'll kill an archer (or even two) at the cost of my warrior, or else I'll avoid a battle altogether. In both these latter scenarios, even non-psychotic civs like Egypt and Persia just ignore my peaceful overtures, and we're locked in permanent war until one of us gets Alphabet or gets Axed.

Is stealing a worker safe with aggro AIs?

It's just about the 2nd of June here downunder... hopefully the game will be released shortly. :rolleyes: I played one practice game for the first 3 cities to be founded and here is how I hope the "real" game will play out based upon my 'sample' map game;

1) The map is so crowded; I don’t need to worry about barbarians.
2) On Emperor level the A.I. STARTS with 2 Archers, 2 Scouts, 1 Settler and 1 worker, compared to my little warrior and Settler – result: exploration to meet other nations is NOT a priority; they will come to you very soon. Search only long enough to find Copper.
3) To survive, you must beeline it for Bronze (copper). My research order:
Bronze, Animal Husbandry (about 2710bc) - which is when the barbs appear, Wheel, Hunting, Fishing, Writing and Alphabet. The competition reaches Writing before you but I reached Alphabet before them and cleaned up while trading.
4) Because I couldn’t make anything besides barracks and Axeman until this point, and I only had three cities… I had a stack of 12 Axeman. And I could now swiftly take over the nearest 3 cities of my unfriendliest neighbour, doubling my size and receiving even more techs when they wanted peace after losing over half their nation.

My build order:
Warrior
Warrior
Grow to 2 and now Worker
Worker built and chop forest in 5 turns for Settler
Build Settler at 2230BC, found 2nd city while worker works Cow with newly discovered AH
Work Mine, then Road with newly discovered Roads to bring resources
Build Barracks in Capital and hopefully send worker out to Copper if located by now, then build axeman, axeman, axeman…

This strategy has set me onto a good footing to continue the test game, and probably our best chance to overcome the A.I. complete advantage at Emperor level starts. You have to take any advantage were you find it…:goodjob:

Good luck to you and to me as we choose our actual paths for this game in earnest… :goodjob: :king:

Its 3 minutes past 7pm here in Auckland, had the after-work beers, keenly awaiting the game....

Hopefully those beers will not effect your starting moves before going to bed...

Hopefully we will have the game soon. I noticed the last two COTM saves were released at 5:28 and 5:12 GMT, on their respective dates. That time is past, as it was two hours ago, so it should be soon...
