News: GOTM 20 Pre-Game Discussion

I'm interested to know if there's a second gold hill to the W. Guess you gotta pick your poison.
If you move SW+SW with scout you'll see if there is one immediately west, if that helps.

The reason I was thinking SW+SW is that that might reveal a site that not only would pick up that gold hill, but also a bunch of 3food+1coin floodplains & who knows what else. Who knows what lurks down there, and ending the turn standing on top of that hill with the scout should reveal a lot of territory. Also, I don't consider losing the rice hidden in the jungle or the lake tiles (with no chance to build a lighthouse) as bad things for a capital city, so losing those while maybe keeping gold + picking up floodplains & who knows what else might be a good trade (which could happen for example if you went 2W instead of 1N on first turn, if your scout reveals enough to make it worthwhile. Or maybe even just 1W, & then get to settle on first turn instead of second & keep the corn as well as pick up at least one floodplain).

I guess I just love floodplains for the commerce city potential. cottaged floodplains (supporting specialists) + gold mine seems like a nice short-term & long-term commerce base.

p.s. LC I fixed typos in my last paragraph you quoted to clarify what I meant, though I think you understood it in the first place

1NW might give you -1 health for jungles. Not a huge factor, I admit.
Remember Cyrus is expansive, so he gets a free +3 health advantage ...

last game was emperor, this game immortal, I wonder what the next game is....

this time I'll pick contender, I was too lucky in the last WOTM immortal game

I'll scout and most likely settle in place

Anyone knows what a Fractual Map looks like?

I was using at least 2 immortals per AI, all promoted to Medic after Combat I. They work perfectly in pairs, and make for a valuable addition to your big stacks in the endgame. You may want to increase this to 3 immortals/AI for much better reliability when picking apart settler convoys. They're typically escorted by 2 archers, and archers occasionally defeat immortals even in open terrain; your attack odds are in the low 90s.

So you are mostly at war with your neighbors and stalling their growth (except one as a trading partner, perhaps). Neato. This will be fun to try. I'll find a way to screw up, though.

I will listen very carefully to all Balbes's advice. That WOTM7 game rocked.

Although in some of my test generations of a small fractal map, I ended up on an island by myself or with only 1 or 2 opponents quite frequently. How would that impact the strategy?

What would you do if you got stuck next to a coppered up Mansa Musa with Skirmishers in hill cities?

by the way, can immortal defend in vanilla?

Yes, defensive boni apply.

: Me.

I'm settling 1 north and going for short term gains, and immortals picking up medic like Balbes suggested.

I expect to be dead quickly.

Boy Immortal means adventurer class for me. My strat will be some early game warmongering to slow down the aggressive AI (except for one or two trading partiners if possible) and pick up stratigic resources and quality city sites followed by as much economic development as i can muster. My goal is to survive and to survive i need to be aggressive.

I think the early food and production beneftis of settling 1N coupled with the Creative tactic to pick up the (I hope) near by horses outway the longer term benefits of settling 1NW. I think scout will go SW-SW then counter clockwise around the lake, trying his best to not get killed. Build: warrior, worker, warrior, settler (for horses). Research AH, Mining, Wheel

After a city with horses, I think that a rax in both cities and as many immortals as i can build for war on my closest neighbor(s) is the route i will go. No more worker or settler builds if i can steal workers and take cities.

Some noob questions for my first Immortal game: What immortal to archer ratio I should be shooting for? 2-1, 3-2. SHould i spend the shields on the barracks or will they take too much time? Do i need to hit the AI before they hook up copper? if the AI has copper and they see my immortals coming will they build spears? Obviously pillaging if i can't take a city is a no brainer, but should i start a war just to worker steal and pillage if i don't think i can take any cities?

Any help would be most appreciated

I might join for this GOTM although I'm afraid ill get my ass kicked on Immortal... anyway, I like the look of settling one NW. Also, I might need some directions like Tosti above... is a pillage war a no-brainer? (atleast -3 relation even after the war is over, eventually a minus with other AIs aswell.)
Ofcourse immortal rush is the way - war is unavoidable, we're playing with agressive AI on immortal... hmm... I'll prolly be on vaca to Italy when the game starts (leaving the 30th)

Still, when you settle 1NW, you get immediate access to wooded plains or wooded plains hill, meaning either (0/4) or (1/3). Settling 1N gives you access to corn or same hill, therefore (3/2) or (0/5). Please, correct.

Also, as we're creative, border expansion takes place after turn 3, not 5.

Lexad, I have to apologize but I am not following some the math. Please educate me.

What would you do if you got stuck next to a coppered up Mansa Musa with Skirmishers in hill cities? He's great for trading if you beeline Alpha.

Your scout wants to figure out how many AIs there are on your landmass asap. Your Mng>AH start is perfect for a bee-line to Alpha if you're isolated.

I have a question: From someone who hasn't played Civ in a long time, and isn't really that great, is there a chance for a NGOTM (Noob GOTM) with the same map just at a lower difficulty setting? Then maybe from there progressing onward every few months as people at the NGOTM level begin to progress in skill?

I guess I'm just not as good as I hoped. I tried the same setup type as GOTM5 and lost somewhere in the 1800's so I was looking to see if the games could be done, just at a much lower difficulty for those of us who aren't as amazing as some of you. :P

You couldn't submit it afterwards - but you could pop open the world editor and remove the AI's head start. Could do that after you win/lose and submit too.

Gooooood question. I am also curious what the better players have to say.

One thing I just realized is the adventurer class bonus isn't decided yet.

Will probably drastically change initial builds etc that everyone is already planning out =P

Food/hammers you get with your first citizen, adjusted for food to feed him.

Immortals are toast to spearmen so you have to rethink things dramatically if your enemy has copper. In another test game, the AI had copper in their capital! So no chance at all of rushing them with immortals. Even pillaging was risky.

But it seems that you lose the whole point of being Persian if you can't ride the plains with a convoy of Immortals.

If your enemy has spears, you just need more immortals. And you need them quick.
