GOTM 101 Pre-Game Discussion!

Well, it has been a while since we played Carthage in GOTM, so even though the civ in GOTM100 was based on Carthage, we'll play Hannibal straight this month. It will be our quarterly high difficulty game (Deity level), but due to the GOTM100 game going long, this game will be on a Small map and play in the normal month long period.

The saves will be available >>here<< on Mar. 27th. You will have a month to play it.

Civilization: Carthage
Rivals: 5 preset
Barbarians: Restless
Difficulty: Deity
Land Form: Archipelago, 70% ocean, Small map.
Geology: 5 billion years old, Normal, Warm

Small Archipelago is a setting i think i never played before. I´m interested what this map may look like.

Looks like a food-rich, shield-low start. Not especially what i prefer on Deity. is that a desert 1s1sw? fp with another river?

settling 1 NE would allow instant irrigation of the wheats.

early builds would depend on how many shields i can muster.

I'm pretty sure 1s1sw is coastal.

Settling 1 NE also appears to give more shields eventually. We lose a hill but gain a mountain and whatever is behind the mountains, which looks like 1 grassland and one hill, plus we trade coast for another wheat.

Deity is not my friend, but on archipelago it might go okay.

I still have a long way to go in GOTM100, though, as sick kids have seriously restricted my playing time.

you must be right about the coast. i must have missed the green "corner" of the tile.

Thanks civ_steve! This looks like another formidable challenge.

About the starting position: I which I could see something in the fog. But a BG 3NE will do.

Hmm, I don't think we need another BG?! If I counted correctly, the visible tiles are sufficient for a 4-turner:

Size 5:
Code:
City Center: 2/1
irrig Wheat: 2/0
mined Wheat: 1/1
mined BG: 0/2
2x mined grass: 0/2
              ______
                5/6

Add another mined grass at size 6 and we have 5/7.

Yes. Thankfully. Because the settings are tough. But I would like to have the option to place a town on the visible BG.

Lanzelot - why not? it was one of the first things that came to my mind as well.

 That idea never crossed my mind, not even remotely... Either it is brilliant or just plain nonsense. But as both of you had that idea, I guess it must be brilliant... :)

However, I still don't understand it. What's the benefit? Our island doesn't look that small, does it?!

Cheers, Lanzelot

:):):)

well, first of all, because i thought it was a COTM starting map i was looking at :D

but moreover, i always tend to have a denser build than most ppl around find attractive.

plus, 3 core river towns are quite powerful on an archipelago map. it sure depends however for which vc you´d want to go. but for a military vc on a small map, do you think rcp 2, 3 or 4 really matters a lot?

NE is a fast start with the option of a four-turner and on the other hand also the option of a Palace Jump to a second town further inland around which a proper ring placement can be made. Or a later Jump if the factory is important. An early Warrior could help find out which option is preferable.

@Lancelot
Upkeep is likely to be a factor. If there is another AI on the island cramming us in we will be lucky to get two rings at all. But for corruption purposes there is little reason.

I'm settling in place. I want to get that one lonely BG productive asap. And with restless barbs and a chance for a small island nation, a combo W plus Settler factory is fine. That 2nd wheat will be a nice resource for a 2nd town RCP3.

It took an extra day, but the Saves are up! So this competition will go until April 27th.

Predator Aggression Increase - I must have been channeling the COTM! :) Oh well, I just bumped up all the AI Aggression meters 1 space (except for 1 AI, who was already maxxed out!) Good Luck!
