News: WOTM 13 Pre-Game discussion

Oops. I see now that the original post said aggressive ai and no goodie huts...
Those options are not turned on... (just a bad case of copy/paste/edit :( )

In a way, it's a shame that these options aren't set. I figured that these options must be set the same way as in WOTM 12 in order to give us a similar challenge, but with a difficulty level that more of us can stomach.

Regardless, I will encourage people to try for a Cultural Victory with this game's setup.

By starting with Mysticism and by not having Isabella as a Rival, you stand a good chance of popping out 1 of the early religions. With only 6 Rivals, you might even get 2 or 3 of the early religions, if you focus on them exclusively.

With the Spiritual Trait, you can switch between religions in order to please your neighbours and keep them off of your back.

Half-priced Temples means that you can get to building Cathedrals relatively quickly.

The Expansive Trait means that you can grow your cities quickly and effectively. This point applies especially once you've switched to 100% Cultural-output mode, as a 100% Cultural Rate plus Theatres in your cities will give you all of the Happiness that your cities will ever need. Your cities will then be able to grow really large, meaning that you'll have either more Food for Artist Specialists or you'll have more worked-Cottages for pure Cultural-based Commerce.

Further, we have a powerful defensive Unique Unit, which comes in with technologies for which you can almost surely trade, if you do not research them yourself.

Finally, the chance to build Castles is normally short-lived in the game. However, in a Cultural Victory type of game, Castles do not tend to go obsolete. So, building our Unique Building, the Citadels, which you can think of as a better defensive Castle, may actually come to pass in your game.

If you haven't yet tried and succeeded at a Cultural Victory in an XOTM game, I believe that this game is the one in which to try to achieve such a challenge! There are lots of great resources on these forums; do a little searching and you'll find a wealth of great tips and tactics that can bring you victory!

Well I am happy with the game settings as they are. WOTMS 8-12 all had raging barbs, Aggressive AI or Always War. Time now for some (slightly more) peaceful building and trading.

Peaceful building? With crazy Izzy and Conquistidors? Not me...

I was away from GotM for a bit, too busy cranking low-level records in the HoF.

I don't understand why so many of you is planning to lost a turn and some future hammer, not to mention the forested gl hill N-NW to gain a dirty hammer by settling on the plains hill.

With all those food this can be easily worked, the grassland cottaged, really i don't undestand.

@ Dynamic Spirit
Yes the start is similar to GotM 13, so about 1 year ago.

Faster worker, faster workboat, faster everything at the start.

Hello, this is my first GOTM/Civ attempt/post thus I have a couple of questions about the procedure:

a. WOTM goes to OCT 12th or something? thats kool, so I have a few more days?

b. What do people mean when they say 'test game,' er, I thought the rules said no reloads/plays?

c. Will the HOF mod melt my bawx?

d. Ive only ever played Civ 1,2,3 and 4 on 'normal' speed, is slower trickyer or easier? (not complaining, I'm here to get pushed out of my comfort zone, and thus be challanged, although monarch should do that to me anyhows)

Thank you fanatics.

P.S ER, HELENGRAD? LOL! c'mon, it could be worse, like living on Chatam Island....

SO, I place the save in mygames\civ4\single?

Then I load Warlords, run the HoF mod, load the game and a messages says:

'the save file you have selected is protected to safeguard the contents of your mod folder'

and CTD.

is this common procedure?

a) You have until October 15th the complete and submit the game.

b) Some people create a custom game with similar specs and worldbuilder a start similar to the screenshot provided. The rest of the map and the opposing AI's will be different, but it's a way to work on your opening.

c) The HoF mod doesn't do anything if you don't want it to. I don't have any of the options selected, so I don't notice anything different when I play with it. It allows the mods to track your game easier and discourage cheating.

d) I always play Epic, so it's not different to me. Most people think slower speeds favor the human because it makes war easier and the AI's suck at warring. It makes each military unit more important because they're harder to replace quickly. But it also means that if you have an advantage, it's easier to press because the AI's can't catch up quickly.

Check and make sure you have the latest patch and the latest HoF mod. That may be the cause of your problems loading the game.

'the save file you have selected is protected to safeguard the contents of your mod folder'
Do you have the recent (2.13) patch?

I wanna try it. The first time I try Game of the month. Recently, I have been playing BTW exclusively. So I don't know if my mods in BTW will conflict with the HOF mod. And as I remembered, I used no-CD mod in Warlord. Will that work?

Also, could someone briefly explain how the score is determined? is it determined by how fast you finish, or how big or advanced you are? I am hoping to get a place;)

I had the same occurrence. Have you found an answer to this?

This is my first attempt at GotM, so needless to say I tried out the Adventurer Class save-game...

That's kinda spolerish - you're not allowed to discuss in-game events outside spoiler threads. Just so that you'd know, being new here.
