Newspaper comics face possible extinction

Will, yeah, its a waste of valuable space. If they werent so deathly afraid of offending somebody, they could use some decent comics instead.

@Dann: Doonesbury is one of those comics that unless youve been reading it for awhile, you have no idea what the guys talking about. Too many 'in' jokes for the casual reader. Also, the few times I did read it, its seemed like it was more concerned with being cool, instead of funny. To me a newspaper comic should be a quick read and chuckle, that you can get digest and understand at a glance. Like the aforementioned Far Side. I understand Zippy is in newspapers on the West Coast. Too bad, if it was available on the East Coast, Id still have faith in the newspaper comic scene.
Zippy? is that that stupid one where the clown talks to statues standing next to stores and so on?

i'm in mass, and i've seen it in atleast one paper. the Boston Globe would be my guess as to which paper it was, but it might be the Boston Herald, not 100% sure.

The comics are insultingly bad, and have been for several years.

If this move results in less Garfield, I'm all for it.

The list of comic strips I've enjoyed over the years is a short one:

Calvin and Hobbes(gold)
Far Side(gold)

and then the rest...

Shoe

um

uh

I laughed at a "Mother Goose and Grimm" strip once.

And the most popular ones are usually the worst. The above mentioned Garfield, the crap called Peanuts, Family *puke* Circus, Cathy(The thought of it makes me shudder), Marmaduke...all pure crap.

Blondie was hot, though.

Ah yes, Far Side. Those are the best things ever written. Larson is a genius.

I dare you to read these and not laugh:

Possibly my all-time favorite -

"It's a fax from your dog, Mr. Farnsworth. It looks like your cat."

Sorry, no pic, but you get the idea.

Two airplane pilots...

"Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the cloud bank?"

I have far too many far side favourites to name, among them are morning face, and the needle factory.

Good riddance. The newspaper comics are vacuous, insipid, and seriously unfunny. Doonsebury and Dilbert, probably the two most well known comics, are complete and utter crap. There hasnt been anything halfway decent in newspaper comics since Gary Larsens The Far Side.

LOVE the Far Side, what a trip! :goodjob: I also like Andy Capp- he is sorry
like me
and The Born Loser-again I resemble that remark ;) .

Dilbert sometimes, but rarely can make me chuckle :crazyeye: .

The Far Side dwarfs them all! :king:

A lot of the so-called news that gets reported now is serioulsy flawed as well. Why should we hold the comics to a high standard when the so-called news that gets reported is so often biased or just flat-out wrong? Back when I studied journalism in HS we were taught that opinion was strictly for the editorial page, and to get two reliable sources before declaring something to be factual. Now we have writers who actually make up the stories! I'll take the comics anytime...

Two great ones I can think of off the top of my head is:
A bunch of people are playing dodgeball in an old West town with the caption:
"It was a tough frontier town; but later, after the arrival of the Earp Brothers, things calmed down, and the town's name was shortened to simply Dodge City"

The other one has a bunch of wolves sitting in the forest with some ducks, with the caption:
"Some wolves, their habitat destoryed and overwhelmed by human pressures, turn to snorting quack"

My favorite new comic now is Jump Start, it is one of the smartest funniest comic strips.
There are plenty of excellet strips out there (plus Peanuts repeats) But why things like Hagar the Horrible, Blondie, Garfield, Family Circus, Ziggy, Cathy, and Bettle Baiely are still around is beyond me. When they say the same joke every week its a wonder why newspapers still carry them.
I'm also liking a new comic called Pearls Before Swine. Its made fun of those comics that are the same inoffensive drviel everyday.

Hmm... Now that you mentioned it, you're right. Guess I never noticed cuz I was seeing it almost everyday.

@thestonesfan
Cathy can be appreciated only from a female perspective.

@SuperBeaverInc.
Larson is indeed a genius.
Panel 1 - a meadow beside a road. bunch of cows standing around on 2 legs chatting, smoking, etc.
Panel 2 - one shouts: "car!"
Panel 3 - all cows stand on 4 legs munching grass as car passes by.
Panel 4 - same exact drawing as panel 1.

I'll just jump aboard the "Larson is a genious"-wagon :goodjob:

Too bad he's stopped drawing, though :(

But we still have Bizarro :D

The cartoons are complete once again the profanity rules have me at a loss for words........junk. I suppose it will have to do.
I would sooner read celebrity gossip than look at the funnies. Its time they were gotten rid of. The last time I looked at the funnies they were so precious, smug and unamusing that they caused me actual physical pain. :(
