Hello all. After the recent amount of topics asking for help, tips, techpaths, and various other strategies, I have decided to help out those that are new to civ, or just need to brush up on thier skills.

In a way, this will be like Sisiutil's ALC Game. However, on a smaller scale. While the ALC Game was played on Prince(Now on Monarch), This game will be played on the Noble difficulty,as Noble is considerd the level where you start off on a pretty even playing field with the AI(Not many advantages as on Warlord, Settler, ect).

The game will be played on the Warlords Expansion, V 2.08

Remember: This will be played as a way for those having trouble on lower levels to help each other and to discuss possible strategies.

The initial game settings will be Noble, Fractal, Standard Size, Epic Speed.

The leader we will play us will be decided by you. Thats right, for our first game we will leave it up to a vote or we could choose random.

I have decided to include leaders that are not always played. Washington being one of them :)

Washington of America-1
Wang Kon of Korea-0
Asoka of India-0
Tokugawa of Japan-0
Gengis Khan of Mongolia-0
Stalin of Russia-0

One of these leaders will be the first choice for our first NGC. I'll keep the polls open a bit longer and see what we will get.

I have a possible suggestion. Install this in your custom assets folder and play as Washington. This removes his traits, UU, UB and starting techs. It will be more difficult than a standard noble game but might allow for a better explication of basic principles without complication from leader specific factors. Just a random idea.

I would say that learning to evaluate and leverage your advantages and traits is a very important part of learning to play.

Plus when I loaded that mod, it didn't take away starting techs for some reason.

I also tried it and had the same problem as soft(dont know why though, I still had that extra happy).

I also think that it is important to learn the strengths and weaknesses of traits.
Seems like Washington is the choice we will go with. I will take 50's idea and we will play a China leader next game :)

I will make antoher thread later on with the starting position for our Washington, and possible pre game discussion.

I agree that adapting to your leaders unique characteristics is an important part in the developement of your play, but as noted there are the ALC threads whose main stated purpose is to highlight that aspect of civ strategy and can be useful I think for players of any level hoping to gain a better undertanding in that area. I feel like a "barebones" discussion of general leader independent strategy fills a niche here.

I don't know why you are having that issue with the techs (if the level is below a certain point I think you get bonus free techs which may be the issue, but I don't think there are bonus free techs at noble?). I rechecked the xml and the Americans definitely should have no techs. I also tested it in game when I edited the xml back when and it worked then.

Anyway this was just a suggestion to perhaps differentiate this further from the ALC series and provoke potentially some new ideas.

One thing I can think of as a problem is maybe you were putting it in your vanilla custom assets instead of your warlords custom assets or you were checking lock modified assets.

Edit to add: Just tested it Noble/Fractal/Epic on Warlords and I had no traits/UU/UB/techs.

we all know Sisiutil is one of my heros, but just because he's doing something doesn't mean somebody else's perspective at trying something similar, on a lower level, maybe even on the same level, wouldn't be educational and fun too. there certainly are enough leaders, and even duplicating leaders at the same exact time you're bound to get different map situations and opponents. perhaps i'm too addicted and just want more of a good thing. having a noble thread to follow too would pass the time while S does his taxes and aelf is working odd hours, and the same would apply when we wait for Sryth to do RL things *giggle*.

if there's a niche for barebones strategies looking to be filled, you could always jump in and fill it, vale ;). this comment admittedly comes from someone who is far from brave enough to ever play in public herself. for me the "complication from leader specific factors" is a big part of the fun, but i'd follow along if there was an interesting game thread where someone took that aspect out. it would really change things i suspect.

Sryth, have fun, i look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Vale I think you may have a point on the 'barebones' aspect to civ(i've been meaning to play a game where I've got no traits and am unable to use specialists(the average "Joe challenge') but there's so many variants and not enough time) , I'm just running a few ideas in my head. I suppose you could show things like Axe/Chariot rushes, Tech Trading or Hammer overflow ;)

But this is Sryth's idea so i guess it's up to him.

I think this would be most helpful to the players on level below Noble (Warlord?) therefore explaining what needs to be done to step up a level E.g. like maybe going into city specialization and what to look out for in city placement.

Valve(and anyone else here on Civfan) can feel free to help everyone in this challenge. I myself always thought Sisiutil was great for doing these, and I know that not everyone here is up to par on Monarch(myself included). Anything to help out those who may need a little help in specialization on cities, placement, diplomacy, war, etc. Valve has the right idea about showing the barebones to a game. We can use this no Tech/UU/Ub feature in the next Challenge(if there is one).
Just need to get the stupid thing to work for me :)
