Ok I have over the last few months had almost the exact same nightmare several times. Not constantly, but enough to get me thinking about it. I want to know if their are any shrinks here who can tell me what it means.

Here's what happens in my dream...

It always starts with me riding in the passenger side of my Dad's car. We always stop either on purpose or several times because we flipped over in a ditch. Then I see a snake in the glove compartment, I panic exit on the pasenger side door. There are snakes spaced on the ground every 2-3' I jump over them and run, but however far or fast I run there are always snakes right at my feet. I quickly get tired, but the nakes are all striking at me, (but missing) and I know that if I stop running I will be bitten by all of them. So I run stepping and jumping over the snakes until I wake up in a cold sweat.

So does anyone have any idea what this means? I don't usually have nightmares or even very many dreams at all, but I have had this one several times in the last few months.

Thanks for the help guys:goodjob:

Dreams don't mean anything, however they could reflect your current life, by which I mean if your falling asleep stressed or have alot on your mind because of x, this can filter into your dreams, what if anything might make you more stressed or negative in your life at the moment? If you can't think of something then it's most likely just one of those things. Everyone has recurring nightmares every now and a again, it doesn't necessarily have to mean something deep, that's just Freuydian stuff, and he's a quack :)

So mr NC, did you ever have sexual feelings for your mother?

It sounds to me like the snakes are representing an issue with your manhood, if you see what I mean. A car huh, you are being taken on a journey, you have no control over, do you feel imasculated by this lack of control perhaps Mr NC, tell me about your childhood :)

Or did you watch Snakes on a Plane recently? Eat cheese a lot before you go to bed?

Mostly you'll have nightmares at the start of your sleep period, and as sleep goes on the dreams tend to be more benign, it has been suggested that this tendency is a highly effective way of de-stressing the body and mind and would explain why we often wake up feeling at peace and invigorated.

It might mean that you fear snakes, but I wouldn't put to much faith into dream interpretation. It's has a hint of psychodynamicism on it.

You feeling stressed out by something at the moment?

I'd consider that. You dream of having to accomplish some task not really possible to do, and if you fail, the game's up. Sounds like performance anxiety to me. I've had dreams like that from time to time.

Dreams tend to inform you of your current mental health and if there are some things that bother or inhibit you. I'm too tired to psychoanalyze this, but I'm sure someone else feels up to it.

Yeah, I really am stressed atm. But I have been having this dream for a lot longer than my current set of anxietys has existed.
Yes I fear snakes...
No I haven't watched snakes on a plane for precisely that reason.

Hmm... Yeah Sidhe maybe I should think more about what the car means... I have been concentrating on the snakes.

I don't really put stock in dreams, but this is the only recurring dream I've ever had so I'm a little spooked by it.

Freud thought snakes were phalic symbols. Jung aparently thought snakes were representative of conflict between the consious mind an instincts.

Which may or may not be of any relivance to interpreting your dream, but none of us know anything like enough about you to do so.

I would not trust Freuds theories too much, they are not really all that scientific when you get right down to it, and they are mostly debunked (at least the strictly Freudian, the neo-Freudian theories I don't know too much about).

Next time it happens.

Say:

"This is just a dream."

"And it is my dream!"

"So I can do what I like."

Reach out:

and tie those snakes into silly knots!

Has anyone ever dreamed that they were dreaming? Last night I dreamed that I was nearly waking up from a very interesting dream, so (in my dream) I tried to stay asleep to keep dreaming the dream that I dreamed I was dreaming. :crazyeye:

Ah lucid dreaming if only everyone could do that, it's such fun :)

Yeah pretty common, I've woken up four times before I got pissed off and woke myself up for real, it's a very odd experience to say the least.

- Do you have any good/bad/neutral memories of events that happened while on the passanger side of your dad's car ? (having one or more such events would explain the reccurance)
- Are you afraid of snakes ? (fear is irrational - and so are dreams; so they play along just fine)

How would you like to try something:
- next time you have this dream and you exit the car and see the snakes just go "Oh crap - Screw this - BITE ME - I CAN TAKE IT" In other words, see what happens if you just give up - you're gonna get tired of running anyway so just get it done with.

or

- next time you have a dream grab one by the neck and start screaming at it while chocking it. Don't care if they/it bites you, shed all your anger from real life on that ONE stupid snake.

BTW, i'm not a shrink. :D

Dreams don't mean anything

I must disagree here with you Sidhe ;)
A good reading about dreams is Freud's 'the explanation of dreams' (possible other synonym term used instead of 'explanation'. They definately follow patterns, and present specific states in ones mental world, and thus have different meaning for everyone, although they still can be argued to follow some global symbolism as well :)

Particularly in the case of dreams which are seen many times, it is true that they have not only a specific meaning- like any other dream- but that they portrary also the fact that this unconscious meaning is still existant in one's psyche, without some defense having disturded its current form (since then the dream would have had changed).

A dream cannot be explained over the internet. Instead you should email me your address and some ca$h. Not a good idea? Oh well, then here goes: :D

In your dream you are with your father. He is driving. The car is also his. The first snake you see is inside the glove apartment, which in the past may have been seen as a store-place where only the father had access (you did not). Now you have access to it as well (i assume the apartment was just open) so you are exposed to the threat that something there, related to the father, was sinister. Besides, you only observed it after you went through some bumbs, which can symbolise various opinnions you have about your father.
The first snake leads you further away from the father, but there you only see snakes, so it is a manifestation of the threat from moving away from him as well.

Of course all this is very general, and is only meant as a suggestion, not as an explanation of what the dream meant for you ;)

How dare you disagree with me!

I can see how certain emotional stress can materialise in dreams, and maybe sometimes we can have more nightmares, but as to the content I'm pretty inclined to side with the shrinks of today and say it may hide some subconscious x, but mostly it's just stuff that your imagination made up. Freud's interpretation of dreams is debunked anyway.

I always used to have nightmares about someone trying to murder me, when I was young. Lucid dreaming took care of that :)

Also, I noticed that after waking up, if I slept in the same position I woke up from, I'd just have the dream again. If I moved, I wouldn't. So if you wake up from a nightmare, find a new place on the pillow to sleep.

Only you know what it means, but here are some clues:

Car flipped over in a ditch: The world upside down. Things are not as they should be. Things have changed in a big way.

Snake in the glove compartment: A hidden threat is discovered.

Multiple snakes all over the place: The hidden danger or threat is now out in the open.

Having to keep running: Youre afraid of confronting the threat head on. Youd rather not have to deal with it.

Is there anything in your waking life that has all of the above characteristics?
