No Coal?

Does Scientific Theory really reveal coal? There's no coal on the entire planet. I event waited a few turns in case it was delayed but nope - no coal anywhere.

Is this a bug? Which advance really reveals coal (This is Standard-size Earth map).

I searched the forum but didn't find this question.

I heard that it's possible for resources to NOT appear, at all, if you're unlucky enough...

I've never been lucky enough to have coal, which sucks Cas the factory really helps production speed late in the game Esp. If ur going for a science victory. I've had to rely on other civs for it.
Also I've had my civ ask for whales and their wasn't a single whale on the map whatsoever.

Coal seems to come in rare but abundant doses. In the dozen games or so where I've gotten up to scientific method, there appeared to be only 3-4 deposits of coal on the whole map but each deposit would have 6 or 7 coal. This compared with horse, iron and oil, which are consistently abundant but come in a range of 2-6 per deposit.

I have only had coal once out of about ten games I've played, usually all the coal is concentrated on the opposite side of the world to me coal does seem to be rare but I have never seen a game with NO coal

I have NEVER had a source of aluminium but then the game's over by the time you would be able to use it.

All my games that have got that far have all had some coal, although I didn't always have any on my own land, sometimes I had to conquer the city that had it or ally with the CS. It would make the Space race pretty hard if you don't get coal for factories.

Never had a situation where a resource wasn't anywhere in the world but have had plenty of games where I don't have a resource. I don't really see it as a problem though and in truth I think not having a resource is handled better in 5 than 4. I always have something and I manage to trade in the end for what I need. Also, be aware of what CS has what resources and ally accordingly. In the 1 city challenge I did (and won via culture [loved it!]) I had no iron, horses, coal, oil, or uranium. What I did have though was a nice pile of aluminium which I used to acquire all that I needed...

Wow, yeah, I've only played two games through (well, one that I won and one that I'm about to win) and in both coal was not only abundant, but well within reach of my empire (first game was Prince, current one is King).

In my current game, I think there are 3 or 4 sources nearby, and ALL of them have 7 coal. Crazy!
