No offense but....

Am I really suppose to not take offense when people say "no offense but..." then insults me? I hear this phrase being said all the time "no offense, but you're an idiot." I'm sorry, but if someone comes up to me and say "no offense, but you're a fat, ugly mofo with skinny legs and you'll never get laid" I'll take offense despite the forwarning that it's not meant to be offensive.

This is also analogous to people who say "I'm not racist, but..." then makes a racial slur. For example "I'm not a racist, but wouldn't you agree that Mexicans ARE slightly lazier than most other people. Not saying all of them are, but most."

"no offense, but you're an idiot."

These are just examples of abusing the freedom of expression! :(

Etiquette and honour should prevent such slurs.

Such covers as 'no offense' or 'joking' do NOT palliate rule violations, at least for this moderator. Trolling and flaming are not disarmed by joking, etc. Moved to site feedback

I sometimes do this to annoy people.

No offense, though. ;)

if i wanted to offend someone, i'd do it plain and clear, no need for ludicrous remarks like the 'no offense' bit.

OTOH, i think that sometimes the poster is trying to say that he disagrees with you but he has no intention to offend you, because he doesn't know you in person, so he could be wrong about the general 'tone' of your first message.

hm, don't know if the above paragraph makes any sense.

Doesn't make any sense to me;) Least not in the context the thread starter was talking about. In the context of the first post the most likely reason the person says it is because he wrongly thinks that by saying "no offense" means any following statements that cause offense will not get him in trouble. Not that I'm sure any of what I just made sense either to any one else:hmm:

In the context your talking about it would be a misunderstanding. Like for example: No offense but your post seems to be full of racist comments. Or in another case: No offense but you seem to be a stinking commie. Althrough I know of some one who would say offense meant :mischief:

I use "No offense" a bit, when I think something I wrote may offend somebody when I did not intend it to offend them. I usually do not realize that it will offend them, unfortunately, and offend them, without typing "no offence". Confused yet? Good, you are meant to be.

Anyway, if I want to insult somebody, I will make sure it is clear that they are being insulted, or purposefully offended. I find my policy works well, unless I fail to realize I am insulting somebody (I am not very empathetic.)

No offense, but your post made no sense whatsoever.

used in its correct context it is used when someone makes a comment that is not intended to be offensive, but could possibly be taken that way.

that is not always how it is used though. If you think that an insult goes to far, report it.

Re-reading it, you are correct. Even I cannot make head or tails of it. I meant to say as follows:

I will use "No Offense" in my post if I did not mean to offend anybody with the content in my post, but I think I may have inadvertantly.

If I meant to offend someone, then I will not type "No Offense" in my post. I usually do not try to offend somebody purposefully.

That should be a little clearer, unless you were joking . . .

Depends on the use. Saying "No offense but you're an idiot" is an overdone joke.

Saying "No offense but you're wrong because blah" is just a way of saying "Don't take it personallly".

No offense, but this thread seems strangely off-topic for Site Feedback.

it's kinda the "is this allowable?" question for the mods.

I wouldn't say I was joking. Your post really didn't make any sense, but I saw a way to point it out in a humorous fashion. It's perfectly possible to state an honest opinion and still get a laugh. For example:

You are a real goober.

Hey!!! I am THE real Goober, I just could not use the name Goober because some person whom had registered but never posted before had taken it. I am a Goob in the Goobiest sense.

And I do agree, you can be honest and humourous at the same time.

This thread arises fr a dispute over a closed thread in OT something along the lines of 'No offense but...' IIRC.

Can be classified as a dispute with mod thread. ;)

no offense, but I think this thread is dumb :p

;)

now then seriouslly, whenI use "no offence", it usually means that I'm talking in that specific case, and not in general life- like lets say m eand calgacus get into a history argument he says somthing I say somthing int he angrey misspelled fashion the epitomizes my posts, and then "no offense calgacus, but rigth now your a ******"- well all said I have adeep respect and likeing for calgacus- were nice friends actually, though i think that somtimes peoples [perception of how phrases are emant to be used in not univewrsal to say the least, which can (and for me often dose ;)) lead to misunderstandings

Since I have not understand half the posts in this thread (mine included ;) ), I think it is time to close it. :)
