No pun intended

Plagiarist! :D

'No pun intended' is usually a sarcastic way of saying 'pun intended'.
It's both enraging. Not only does it violate the don't 'explain the joke' rule, it's also a self-congratulatory way of saying 'see what I did there' and implies the audience is to dumb to figure it out on their own.

Instead of 'no pun intended' I just go with a :cringe:

It's a stupid thing to say. If I'm playing a game and a move I make turns out spectacularly well, I don't go around all the other players and say 'I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do something amazing. I meant to bore you with my mundanity; to let you, teammates, down, and to give you, opponents, a chance.'

No way. I was playing well, and I'm happy that something I wanted to go well did.

When conversing, if I make a pun that I didn't intend, why would I apologise or deny it? It's implicitly suggesting that humour is a bad thing. It's saying "I'm sorry that I said something funny and interesting at the same time. I really want just to be boring, so please treat me as such."

What a joke.

Should no pun intended mean "please ignore my accidental pun" or "laugh cause I just made a pun by accident"?

Because some people in this thread seem to take it for one and some the other.

Either way, I think it's an overused phrase, so you won't find me using it.

As for "(pun intended)", in speech there are other ways to draw attention to a pun, so it's unnecessary and awkward. In writing it might make sense, but I've never seen it used.

I find the smarter someone is, the greater a chance they enjoy puns. No pun included.
