No range units challenge

Getting Statue of Zeus and Heroic Epic on trebuchets has them taking off huge chunks (like half the health) of an enemy city defense 20, even without the promotion for attacking cities. I think there might be some multiplication of factors going on.

Sending in a pre-damaged melee unit seems to do the trick for me. I usually run with a minimum of 3-4 siege units. If one does get damaged, the 2 or 3 others in place are enough to drop the city in the next turn.
For me if 2/4 survive, it's a good ratio. Admittedly, my experience is not that massive, simply because I don't even bother with siege before artillery. But from the limited experience, that's about it. Weakened melee units sometimes do get targeted and sometimes they don't. It seems AI has some sort of formula and targets aren't picked randomly. If I weren't so lazy, I could try and take a peek at DLL, but I am. And not sure it'd provide any info. This code is messy. :crazyeye:

works best to get them promo'd on weak/small cities. if you can get 2-3 in place in the same turn (w/melee units in front) it can only target one of them. w/japan 3 trebs with 2-3 samurais at a doorstep will take that city in 2 turns, easily a def 15-20 city in 1 turn. and be sure and check to see if that civ has taken tradition or the pantheon that give bonus city attack str. that burned me a couple times. city attack bonus plus one comp bow took out trebs in 1 turn pretty much every time.
Oligarchy or not, you want to conquer the civ anyways, right?

15-20 strength cities aren't relevant for trebs. It's more like 40. And 20 strength cities thrash cats with ease.

Does the city health decrease faster after certain point? I shooted one city with my cata and it decreased only little. Then suddenly cata tear down almost half of city strength and they all had same promotions. or is it just optical illusion?

O Yes yes the AI has a lot of formulas. You do not have to loose so many units! The AI priorities damaged units. Move in with a couple of fresh melee, and have a damaged unit that fortifies in preferably rough terrain with uppgrades. The AI will shoot at this unit. There are lots more you can do, for example take the most damaged unit and move it behind mountain or something else. Then only the city can shoot at it, not the ranged unit in his city, this makes the bombardment less extreme on one single unit. Move in and move out a lot. Just try to gain XP early, not cities or such.

Military tradition is a absolut must in this challenge! It is tre strongest policy in the whole game normally, and in this challenge it is even much better (needed I would say). Melee units start out weak. But later they have very very strong uppgrades, much better than ranged units ever get. So as the game move on you will not loose those much uppgraded melee units much. They will have 100 %+ defence vs ranged etc. :)

If they have the same promotions, RNG is trolling you. :) Happens sometimes.

Heh, I do know the theory. :) I'm not saying I'm the best tactician. In fact I'm pretty sloppy player overall, but when it comes down to having a barely enough units to make the push, somehow I tend to pay more attention. :D I implement everything you mention (except maybe unlocking Honor early - is that what you mean? I usually take it as second tree in domination games). It's not enough. I'm sure big part of my frustration caused by being unable to stop comparing between range units pushes and everything else.
I can't wait for your Mayan game. ;)

sometimes i have a choice of cities at low defense to take first. if not it usually means rolling in with a couple more units than if they didnt have a city attack bonus, expecting to lose a couple. i was just saying i need to check on those things before choosing the city. sometimes i walk in unprepared.

I've seen that too and it's always in the same order where the first shot does little then the second and after do a ton, almost like you destroyed defensive buildings. I will try this with my Civ randomized just to see how different ones go. I guess the best if you wanted a challenge would be the ones with UU of the banned types.
