no XP from battles after getting it from the hut?

I've noticed it several times - after my Scout picks up some XP from huts he goesn't get XP from battles anymore. Is this bug or a feature.
I suspect that hut XP is like a loan - you get some but then you'll have to give it back. So if you got 5 XP from the hut you need to gain 6 from battles to gain the next XP point. Can someone confirm this?

Animals will not give you extra XP points once your units have 5
Barbs once you reach 10.

Is the formula 1 exp for every battle won? (except for the barb/animal cap)

No. I saw my units getting more than 1 per battle. I haven't figured out the pattern yet.
My sub got 1 for damaging enemy ship and retreating near dead.

From the manual (page 44):

"The amount of xps you get for winning a battle depends upons whether you are attacking or defending and the relative strengths of the units involved. A unit gets twice as many xps for attacking as it does when defending. Further, if you defeat a stronger opponent you get more xps than for defeating a weaker opponent."
