Nobles Club CLV - Justinian I of the Byzantine Empire

@elitetroops:
Spoiler :

That's tough to lose a game like that. Did you keep an eye on the victory screen to see how close anyone else was to winning the game? If you did, what did you do to prevent Pacal from winning, especially after launching your spaceship? With nukes available, it probably would have been possible to raze one of his cultural cities to prevent this from happening.

I didn't think about the victory screen. I did see one notification that 1 of Pacal's cities had hit Legendary culture, but I missed the second notice so I though he was still a ways off...or at least that it wouldn't pop before the spaceship arrived.

Also, do you feel the wonders were worth it? You were at 3 cities for a very long time. Capital was pumping out enough culture on it's own, you mentioned Thessalonica got a monument earlier, so Stonehenge gave you the great benefit of one monument... As for Great Wall, did you have barb problems? Izzy was blocking the east and there's not much land in the west, so I bet there wasn't huge hordes of barbarians running you over. 2-3 warriors could have fogbusted and defended the west, and functioned as military police in cities later, at 1/3 of the cost of the Great Wall. The great spy points provided by TGW are useless on the lower levels when the AI techs so slow.

Well, I was expecting to expand more...goes back to my mistake at not exploring as much as I should've - I didn't realise i was on an island until it was too late, so I built Henge and TGW in expectation of pushing out into a big continent. And possibly getting that "Barbarian Uprising" event, which has ended games before.

Also TGW gives a boost to Great Generals, and so does Imperialist so I thought they'd match up? Again, didn't know yet there'd be nearly no land battles.

Likewise, the spare settler was because I built two, and then realised Isabella had boxed me in.

Thanks for the advice, though! I'll keep it in mind for the next one. :)

I'm uploading my save from just before I launched the spaceship, if anyone wants to tell me I was being an idiot for doing\building something.

Spoiler :
Started a golden age 225AD with a GProphet. I changed my mind regarding tech choice - I went to engineering first, then towards feud-guilds. Trebs are kinda needed at this point anyway, since Cataphracts don't ignore walls/castles. Chopped forests to units (trebs and galleys mostly). Also ended Isabella's suffering.

Started 2nd GA as soon as I had the :gp: for it. About to declare on Shaka who has GLH, but also quite a lot of semi-obsolete units. Logistics is kinda painful and need a lot of ships. Still, it shouldn't be hard to conquer the world with the amount of cities/production that I have.

Concerning the early moves on this map:
Spoiler :
There are three great cottage city spots by the river - you should try to settle them asap! Pack those early cities closely if there are tons of great tiles (floodplains) like on this map. Also try to work the gold all the time, it's a monster tile especially for an imperialistic civ. Easy way to do it is to dedicate a city only for it (often your 2nd city). Food first is often right, but here delaying AH to expand quickly via chopping is the correct play in my opinion.

Also you shouldn't think about attacking Isabella before you know that you are not semi-isolated with her.

edit: Well I kinda did attack her before that, but just to steal a worker. You can still get her to pleased at least with shared religion (+8) and city gift (+5) to offset the -3 penalty for declaring.

@HeliosDiscple

It's generally too late at that point; it's very likely that the game was long decided before that. Most likely the changes would have to be made at 0 AD and 1000 AD if not earlier

Spoiler :

In that situation, you shouldn't be researching anymore, once you get your space techs going-- future tech isn't going to help you win the game. Instead, you should have turned off all research (and also, don't build research either-- build wealth). Hoard up gold and buy stuff, so you can build more nukes and troops to take down pacal. Your hammers are also being built for useless stuff like internet when you have basically everything and war stuff. All you really need to do is rushbuy a fleet, use several nukes to wipe out defenders and simply bum rush with either armor or mech infantry, to raze one of his big 3. Even if your attack force gets destroyed, he will not have a culture victory.

Just remember to pay attention to the victory screen. To go culture victory he must turn off his research, and thus he'll be relatively backwards compared to you.

Spoiler :
space victory is easy enough to get at emporer with just the land on our island,but I think I can see why you lost this at warlord...FORESTS-everywhere,there not even lumbermills,why oh why oh why...

I agree with elite troops,you need to get some of the game basics right,the first 100 turns being paramount.

Nothing wrong with TGW with IMP leaders,but you need to evaluate the start before making that decision.Building stone henge and the GW will of preventing you from making settlers,which I believe that's what your talking about in the post above.

anyway,good luck on your next game,I think it may be the Kymer or the malinese next on NC.
