...except that we can expect it in Civ VI:

Aside from custom cathedrals, meeting houses, etc. that you can put into your holy site now based on a belief, you can also have power. For example, being able to purchase theater districts or commercial hubs with faith alone. You're going to have religious combat now, you're going to have inquisitions, you can have inquisitors, apostles, there's a whole different level if you want to play that aggressive religion-versus-religion game.

I was surprised not to find a thread on this (please don't link it if it exists, as my quota for personal idiocy has been filled for this week :p). The quote about 'commercial hubs' intrigues me; could it mean a Commercial district? So a faith-based economy might be possible? What about buying a Science district with faith? There's a debate that will entertain us until Civ VII comes out (and possibly long after!).

As for how Inquisitors could work, I guess they drive out foreign religions from a city. So now there must be some incentive for that -- perhaps depending on Government and/or civic cards, the foreigners' heathenous ways can cause unhappiness in your otherwise tranquil, cozily xenophobic population? The only solution is to ask 'how do you plead?' until they learn the correct answer... :mischief::jesus:

... And the new victory type? Religious victory? All hail MESSIAH!!! Halleluja! Praise the Great Nuke for eradicating the unbelievers!:nuke::goodjob:

There's plenty to discuss here, so, fire away (hopefully not literally...).

Well, inquisitors aren't new; we had them in Civ5. I'm curious if "apostles" are the new term for missionaries or something different...

Wait, wut? :dubious: How come I never saw them in all my hours of playing Civ V? Were they unlocked by a belief that I never chose, or added in a patch when I'd already stopped playing the game?

They were part of Gods and Kings. Once you improved your religion you could buy them with faith to eliminate rival religions in your cities and to protect from rival missionaries and prophets.

Regarding apostles: despite it's Christian connotations, the definition of apostle is largely the same as of missionary (messenger). As I understand it, missionary has its roots in the Latin translation of apostle. This is to say I wouldn't expect Civ VI to have missionaries, apostles, AND great prophets.

So if we take Shirk's choice of words to be intentional, it could be assumed that the missionary mechanic may be different than in Civ 5. Similar to how "Workers" are now "Builders." Could it be that apostles are non-consumable missionaries that exert faith pressure over time indefinitely rather than dumping lump sums of faith 3 times?

System like that would give the offended party more agency when it comes to dealing with foreign missionaries, as they wouldn't disappear after being used in a city. Could make for some interesting diplomacy. & if Hideyoshi is the Japanese leader this time around, as a "source*" (yeah, I know) suggest, then it stands to reason missionary & anti-missionary would be a lot more involved than the fire and forget system of Civ 5.

I mean, this is all purely speculative, but surely his use of apostle must mean SOMETHING right?

*Reddit's TPangolin, oraginzer of their Battle Royale series & curator of their Civ VI infodump mentions "Source tells me that Japan is in the game, but the leader he encountered was not Oda or Tokagawa (but was still Samurai-esque) which leads me to speculate that it's Hideyoshi." Hideyoshi is notable for not only for unifying Japan but also for his wariness of western religion.

You had to spend a second Great Prophet to Enhance your religion to unlock Inquisitors.

The AI never uses them, as far as I can tell.

It's a sketchy source at best absolutely. I've also learnt that apparently Hideyoshi is quite the controversial choice according to some Reddit users. Whether or not Firaxis forsaw this and chose to not go with Hideyoshi remains to be seen essentially.
