Seriously, give the AI a dozen units from the start so that they can mock your military and steam roll you before turn 100 on marathon ? Not my effing idea of fun. This is Emperor diff, for eff's sake, not $%&#$%& deity. And it's not even bl**dy Montezuma we are talking about, it's that b*tch Elizabeth from across the map, not quite the warmonger, is she ?

I liked it more when the human player _could_ wipe them out by turn 100. At least you didn't have to do it. But against this kind of bs ??? No. Effing. Chance.

P.S.: The reason I am so p*ssed it's because it was the ideal position for a specialist game as Suleiman. 8 wheat, 2 stone, 1 cow @ the 2nd city. Oh, and with 38 rounds for one warrior, no, I could not have built a decent military even if I had known.

Edit: Oh Jesus, give me a break, now China also joins in. Not that it effing matters.

Try a lower difficulty. The difficulty in VEM is higher than in vanilla. Or get a few archers really quick. :p

Or you could edit the Handicaps files to remove the benefits given to AIs at the start if you so desire ;)

With archers, or even just a warrior, your capital can beat a rush of warriors quite easy, though. If the numbers don't reach over ten, at least. You'll need walls and oligarchy (or whatwasit) for the +100% city ranged strength.

It wouldn't surprise me if the early game units were much nastier on Marathon. It seems reasonable that the AI free units could vary by game speed.

Since the March vanilla patch the AI likes to rush human players. Firaxis added this in the game core only they have access to, so it's not something we can significantly change. If you're having difficulty defending against this rush I'd recommend building a few archers, and possibly get Oligarchy.

Like vanilla, the AI gets a few extra units at the start in the mod. The change between vanilla and the mod is the AI gets a few archers instead of a few warriors. This is not directly affected by game speed, but slower speeds do allow players to march their units farther distances in a comparable amount of tech-time.

England will generally attempt to conquer a world empire, like in real life. All three characteristics of Elizabeth aid in this: naval experience, longbows, and the steam mill production bonus.

well, the initial units of the ai is something you have to deal in emperor marathon. I don't find that fun but i know it's important. For now the single player goal is to resist at the beginnig because after that is simple to reach the ai. Without that the player will reach the incompetent ai sooner and game over. for me on emperor the ai never reach 900 points
I suggest to sell the first luxories you have to buy an archer. I was able to resist and invasion with 2 archer, 1 warrior, 1 city and 1 scout. Is not that hard. It depends on luck, but i was able to beat the first invasion 3 games of 5

What I'd really like is to be able to direct the AI to start their conquest on some weaker citystates instead of going up against a strong major civ. It'd be better for them in both the short and long run, and less frustrating for the human. Unfortunately, the AIs poor choice of rush target appears to be hardcoded in the game core.

I get rushed alot now that I'm up to emperor.
At first I would have to start 2 games for every 1 I continued on due to the landscape and AI pile-ons.

I build a lot of units up front and forfeit the early wonders.
I was next to Napoleon who by turn 5 had 2 cities, 3 workers. a trireme, 2 archers 2 warriors 2 scouts and probably more. Does the trireme mean he had sailing?

Is there a way to increase production of units/building without speeding up tech. I feel the tech on Quick is about 15 turns ahead of my buildings by turn 70 if I'm expanding a bit.

Notice that there's a new mod out called InGame Editor that allows you to add stone, wheat, etc. to survive the early years of empreror. It also makes up for what I see that the AI usually has marble for wonders and I never get it.

You can place resources from the tuner's Map tab, without the need for mods. Tech pace is a tricky thing to balance since it varies so much depending on playstyle.

I saw this thread and it answered my own question which saved me from having to make a separate post. I just started a game on easy as China and made the mistake of enabling raging barbarians. While the barbarians started to literally kill my units piecemeal, all my neighbor civs denounced me one after the other. And this was on Easy.
