Not Quite Mandalay - the Suez Emergency 1951-6

he is a guy that defeated Israel , without dispute , at least for a week , an absolute cause for the dislike or maybe envy . And ı would say he wasn't killed because he signed a peace deal . It would have been harsher for the "world" to see him back in the Arab League , victory somehow crowned . Just like Russians were thrown out in July 1972 , and they had to replace the Migs and various other stuff for October1973 , because China would have done the same by 1976 ...

Sadat was successful in defense, and took the initiative in peace. I don't think the 'world' had a problem with Sadat who was awarded the Nobel prize, just the Arab League who booted him out, and the extremists who assassinated him.

he was going to come back to the Arab world as a leader and the extremists , despite their own belief in what they were doing , were a contract job . Mübarek did all what he could be expected to do as a regular Arab , but he was shunned . The guy even sent troops to the war in the Gulf and the first thing Saddam did was getting an Egyptian plane shot down "in error" . ı personally think Sedat should have waited until 75-76 period to fight alone , but the internal pressure was too great and reputation of Israel too high .

and the only thing that would ever justify mentioning later events in a Suez thread would be the weird continiuation of the events . Considering the Eygptian airfields were once again bombed in daylight in 67 , 185 aircraft " shot down" in 1956 and "75%" destroyed in 1967 stressed the importance of hardened aircraft shelters and it was yeah right in 1973 when Israelis came for the third time . And while this is nothing to bring on the Anti-Defamation Leauge even the Americans were dealt with . Even when US Navy was providing radar traces for the benefit of all those Mirages sweeping in from the West , the rumours were about a cruiser at sea and the communique said a Boeing bomber was shot down attacking ... Such fun , Heyl Havir even deployed a Mig-21 ; not only the Mirages climbed at a rate of one third of the Fishbed , but they were anyway ... And of course the rumours of a B-58 in action against combatants are indeed false . But it gets even better when one hears Saratoga indeed launched at least one live nuke in response to USS Liberty .

Nasser stood against Western imperialism, he did what had to be done to defend Egypt and it's rightful sovereignty. Seriously talk about British apologists.

Nasser also led his country into loosing (military) at least 5 wars: Suez, Yemen, Israel-67.
He routinely lied to his population, and via Radio Cairo to all the Arab world.
He advanced the Egyptian agenda, like every small dictator play on nationalism to keep their power.
He also created the parasitic structure of power that still infest Egypt politic.

You can see him as a hero, only if you forget 95% of what he did, and concentrate on a narrative that has little to do with reality.
