NotW XXX: Dark Radiance Game Thread

Three Days Later

There was Outpost B-11, right where it was supposed to be, its metal reinforcements glaring in the afternoon sun. Despite what had supposedly gone on inside of it, from the outside it looked like a calm and peaceful sanctuary. The large group approached the main doors and dropped their large packs they were carrying with them. The leader of the group motioned for his lieutenant to come over to him to speak.

“Go ahead and try the main doors. If they won’t budge go ahead and set some charges. Either way, once the path is cleared, I want you to lead your task force in as we already discussed.”

“Understood,” was the lieutenant’s curt reply. He trudged through the remnants of the snow up to the thick slabs of metal that served as the entrance to the outpost. He grabbed the handle and gave a might pull, but sure enough, they didn’t budge one bit. “Bring the charges!” he shouted back to group.

One squat man immediately came forward with some insidious looking devices which he promptly set up right next to the door. Within a minute the charges were ready to detonate. “They’re ready to go boss whenever you are,” the demolitions expert addressed the leader of the group. Rather than replying he simply nodded his approval. After the group had backed up a good distance, the expert flipped a switch, and an explosion rocked the foundation of the outpost. The lieutenant then assembled his team, took out his rifle, and headed into the outpost.

Fifteen minutes later, the team remerged from the outpost with pale expressions on their faces. The lieutenant immediately headed over to the leader to report. He began, “We were expecting a gruesome scene, and but still, what was in there, it almost makes me pity those pour souls.”

“We’re not here to feel sorry for those soldiers lieutenant,” the leader interrupted, with an indifferent expression. “We came here to answer a question, and we both know what that is. Is there anyone left alive in there?”

“Well…” the lieutenant hesitated, unsure of how to word his answer. “I’m not completely sure if what I saw in there is really considered ‘alive’. You’d better just come see it for yourself...”

Evening 8

As the sun arced across the sky towards its resting place for the night, it lit the horizon up in a brilliant canvas of crimson that steadily shrank with each passing minute. The moon, on the other hand, peeked above the horizon at first with some hesitation, but after assuring that the sky was indeed becoming vacant, it began to jolt forward. With it came the onset of darkness, an endless void that served as the background for the halo of fading crimson light.

Inside the outpost, the survivors had the same intentions as the sun, as they too began to prepare for night. Askthepizzaguy had set up yet another feast for the last few of the survivors. It was a solemn meal by all regards. The eight of them sat at a single large table. Each member distanced themselves as far as possible from all the others, and those with weapons laid them next to their plate of food, easily within reach, so that each seemed to be like another piece of silverware. No one took their eyes off the others for long for the fear that it would be the last mistake they ever made. Hardly a word was breathed during the entire ordeal. The two Agents CCRunner and Stuck in Pi refused to take off their gas masks for the meal and so they had a hard time eating anything. It had been intended as a relaxing occasion, but the tension that had been building the whole week had reached its apex; nothing short of a miracle would have been able to defuse the situation.

It was then, at the time the sun was nothing but a pin pick on the edge of a vast expanse, that a shriek of agony suddenly rang out of Train Conductor CivGeneral. The seven others looked on, aghast, as she fell to the ground, writhing in pain. They rushed over to her body to try to determine if there was any way to help her pour soul, but by that point it was too late: she lay motionless on the floor with a glazed look in her eyes. Everyone couldn’t help but notice that in a few places on her mouth, it looked like small holes had been burned through the skin.
Spoiler :
The Train Conductor CivGeneral was innocent!

“What happened to her?” one of remaining occupants of outpost exclaimed in shock. “She was completely fine one moment and was dead the next!”

“I think I saw her take a sip of her drink right before that happened,” one of the others commented.

“With the loss of yet another, this makes matters more pressing than I had feared they would be,” interjected the Ex-Commander Sprig. He said it with a complete tone of seriousness, but something, Askthepizzaguy noticed, something on his face made him look eager. But eager for what? Another thing that he noticed was that the Commander seemed to be wearing overly baggy clothing for some reason, a style of dress that he had never worn before. “As such,” Sprig continued, “I instead publically condemn the Chemist j65536d. That woman is a murderer. If we execute her now, I can prove it.”

With his little announcement concluded, Sprig fell silent. An unreadable expression flashed across the man’s face so quickly that any sane person would have questioned if it was ever there in the first place. But to Askthepizzaguy, Sprig’s look of intense satisfaction mixed with unending menace remained frozen on his face for what seemed like an eternity. More so than any other event that had occurred in the past week, Sprig’s expression imbued the Cook with such a severe sense of dread that he couldn’t help but shudder. He felt if he didn’t immediately agree with Sprig, that he would be putting his life in more danger than it had ever been before.

“I think I agree with you Ex-Commander,” Askthepizzaguy spoke up. “I accuse j65536d as well. Additionally, I will match your choices as to who should get the items.” Having said this, the Cook felt immediately relieved.

“Wait a second,” the Electrical Technician Beefy187 piped up, “that means that both Csargo and CCRunnner have the same number of accusations. Are we going to execute both?”

“I’ll guess we’ll have to,” was the reply.

“No hold on!” the Weapons Specialist Csargo shouted. “They can’t change their accusations at the last minute like that! I am innocent I tell you, innocent! Commander Frozen entrusted me with more guns than he did anyone else in this outpost before he left; if he trusted me why can’t all of you do the same?”

“Shut up, you babbling fool,” came a response from the frustrated Agent Smoker CCRunner through his gas mask. “If anyone in this outpost is above suspicion, it should be me. Not only was I attacked by a basilisk twice, but I was also the only person to kill one here. Why does it seem like you are all ignoring the evidence right in front of you?”

Despite CCRunner’s and Csargo’s further protests, the last remnants of the firing squad began to line up around the two men. They all checked to make sure their guns were loaded, and then they brought them up to aim. As this was happening, CCRunner glanced over to the window, where the last rays of the crimson light were filtering through the darkness that completely enveloped it. In the space of these few seconds, the Versatile Defense Force Agent thought back on his immaculate career record. He had never once failed a mission in service to his country, but he had sacrificed much. He instinctively reached down to light up a cigarette, but then he remembered he had ran out of them ages ago. He took one more glance at the black sky that was now punctured by sporadic distant specks of white. He then turned back to face the ones he had meant to save from themselves and sighed a deep breath that permeated the whole outpost. It was a pure action in thought, but the gas mask distorted it into a menacing gasp.

“Before you all go through with this, I just want to tell you the truth. You are all going to die. In fact you are all going to ripped open, in a few days no less, by the developing beasts inside you. I can assure you that it is not a pleasant or quick process. That is why Stuck in Pi and I came here: we were to mercifully kill you all to spare you from a much greater pain. Before you judge us I want you all to think about what we were trying to do,” CCRunner paused here a second, and then continued, his demeanor even graver than it had been before. “If those beasts are allowed to live, they will not only kill you, their host, in the process, but they could potentially infect more and more people. If they aren’t stopped here, they could potentially infect all of Thrane!” he exclaimed passionately.

“So here is your last chance. Allow Stuck in Pi and I to do what we came here to do, and we will prevent your suffering as quickly and painlessly as possible. So what do you say?”

The outpost fell deathly silent with the conclusion of the Agent’s speech. The remaining seven soldiers seemed to be suspended in time. No one dared move, no one dared speak, and for a while no one dared breath. Had someone walked in on this gathering at this moment, they would have been thoroughly convinced that the seven of them were literally frozen. More than anyone else, there was one soldier who was left speechless. His initial reaction was to throw his entire being into opposing the VDF agents and their supposedly ‘merciful’ offer. But right before he was about publicly defy them, a stray thought passed into the wicked and tortured mind of the Ex-Commander.

“Is this life really worth living?” Sprig thought to himself. The more he pondered this question the more he began to realize that he was no better off than when he was deathly sick. “Is my life worth more than any of the others here? Does this world really deserve my continued existence if I have to become a mass murder in order to live without unbearable pain?” He looked at his hands, and though they still looked pristine, he knew that they were truly soaked with blood. The Ex-Commander knew that he had never directly killed someone, but that didn’t stop him from feeling the guilt of his indirect, or even future, victims weighing down considerable pain. He thought back to when he had been perfectly happy, before this whole mess had started, before he became irreparably sick. It was in this moment, while the real thoughts of the Ex-Commander still controlled his mind, that he decided he was going to take CCRunner up on his offer, and end his suffering forever.

“I will-” Sprig started, but then a shift in his thoughts occurred, brought on by the dark radiance of his Strange Stone. The depraved half of the man’s conflicted mind, the half that was only concerned with survival at any cost, made one last great push; and once it had re-established its dominance in the that short moment, it never planned on losing its place ever again. Sprig now realized he would have to convince the others to go through with the planned execution of CCRunner and he would have to do it quick. “-not throw myself down in front of you and let you kill us all on your mere whim!” Sprig finished passionately. “There is still no proof to your claims, and for that I say we kill you right here just like we planned to!” he thundered with conviction. “Everyone, open fire!” Spurred into action by the Ex-Commander’s fighting words, the survival instincts of the other soldiers came to fore of their thoughts as well, and they agreed unanimously with Sprig’s plan of action.

Csargo, who had been the closest to CCRunner, reacted first by pulling out his rifle. The other soldiers were right behind him though. They took aim and then let loose on the triggers, letting the guns shoot as fast as they could. Despite his opponent’s quick reflexes CCRunner had been prepared however. He ducked underneath the Weapon Specialist’s first volley and rushed forward to Csargo. He grabbed the man’s arm, twisted hard while and at the same time swinging all of his weight back to where he had just come from. The result was the Weapons Specialist Csargo being thrown right between the other soldiers, who had still been firing their guns the whole time, and CCRunner. Unfortunately for Csargo, this resulted in his body becoming a living bullet shield, and by the time the others registered what had happened and stopped firing, it was too late. With more holes in his body than a piece of Swiss cheese, Csargo flopped to the floor dead.
Spoiler :
The Weapons Specialist Csargo was innocent!

Stuck in Pi taken by surprise at first, was now ready, and he followed up CCRunner’s maneuver with some covering fire while CCRunner retreated to a safer position. Stuck in Pi then retreated back as well to the table at which they had all been sitting at not too long ago. He flipped it over onto its side and kneeled behind it, taking a shot over the top edge whenever the opportunity permitted. Their enemies, now lead by Sprig, reorganized themselves and began to slowly and cautiously advance on the VDF agent’s positions. They used whatever cover they could find to accomplish this: many a chair and cabinet soon found themselves a part of the conflict. Though both Beefy187 and j65536d hadn’t had guns initially, both of them had taken guns of the body of the late Csargo. It became quickly apparent that the VDF agents were much more skilled then their opponents except for Sprig, who easily matched them, if not surpassed them. Sprig’s side had one main advantage however: numbers. Despite CCRunner’s and Stuck in Pi’s best efforts they were gradually becoming surrounded, and they knew it.

“CCRunner,” Stuck in Pi shouted over the din of battle, through his gas mask, “we’ve got to even the playing field quick or we’re done for! “

“What do you think I’m trying to do!” the exasperated CCRunner returned.

Sprig had heard the exchange and saw that this was his opening. All he had to do now was give the agents a little incentive to expose themselves… “Askthepizzaguy, Beefy187, and j65536d, quick, advance while they’re distracted! I’ll provide some covering fire,” the master ordered his pawns. The three of them immediately began to move forward, and just as Sprig expected, the desperate agents exposed themselves just long enough to take aim and fire; that was all the time Sprig needed.

Stuck in Pi had taken aim at the Chemist j65536d and all the agent’s training paid off with a direct hit to her head. She was killed instantly.
Spoiler :
The Chemist j65536d was innocent!

CCRunner on the other hand had shot at Askthepizzaguy. His aim was nearly as good as his team mate’s; the cook felt a bullet drive into his upper chest and screamed out in pain. The cook lived however, because CCRunner was stuck with only a pistol. But the cook’s and chemist’s sacrifice was not in vain: Sprig had enough time to line up a shot against Agent Black Eye Stuck in Pi, and once the Ex-Commander had a gun in his hand and you within his sights, you may as well be pronounced a dead man at that very moment. Even a Versatile Defense Force Agent was not an exception. Stuck in Pi was dead ere he hit the ground.
Spoiler :
The Agent Black Eye Stuck in Pi was a Versatile Defense Force Agent!

“Stuck in Pi, no!” CCRunner wailed, his gas mask turning the cry into the sound of all out scream. He ran over to his comrade’s body and ascertained what he already knew, but yet had to double check despite it being obvious. He noticed that Stuck in Pi’s radio was emitting static along with a lot of other seemly random noise, probably as a result of his body hitting the ground. He knew however that now was not the time to dwell on the dead, so he glanced up to see Sprig, with the widest and most malicious grin that could possibly be accommodated on his face, advancing to his position at this very moment. “I’ll be back to get you Stuck in Pi, once I kill that demon!” CCRunner declared, nearly sobbing at this point. He then got up and did the thing Sprig least expected: ran the other way. CCRunner ran into one of the hallways leading away from the main room of the outpost.

“So the VDF are now in a habit of running away from their enemies!” the Ex-Commander laughed manically, now dropping all his false pretenses of being sane or even human for that matter. “And to think, not too long ago I was earnestly praying that I would be asked to join them,” he chuckled again. He took aim at CCRunner, just as the agent was about to turn a corner, and fired, hitting the agent in the stomach. CCRunner gasped in agony and fell to the floor, the impact of this causing his gas mask to fall off. Before Sprig could take the finishing shot however, CCRunner picked himself off the floor and began to drag himself as fast as he could go, turning the corner as he did so. Sprig followed with a leisurely pace, already confident that he had won. He turned the corner as well, and saw the blood trail of lead to just past the Door to the Communications Room.

Sprig fired again, this time purposely aiming for a non vital point as he wanted to have some fun with his prey before he ended it. CCRunner was again hit, this time in the leg. This caused him to fall the floor yet again, and this time he didn’t get up. Sprig approached the victim with his evil smirk still on his face, concentrating solely on how he wanted to make CCRunner, who was yet living, suffer. This was his one mistake. He strolled up to the body like he was taking a walk in the park, and he was getting ready to inflict more pain when suddenly a gun shot rang out, this time from behind Sprig. The Ex-Commander howled in anguish as he looked down at his chest and saw a stream of blood seeping through his baggy clothing. Behind him stood the Electrical Technician Beefy187, with his back to the Door of the Communications Room.

“It was quite kind of you two,” Beefy addressed those in front of him, “to clear out the rest of the soldiers for me. It sure makes my job a whole lot easier.” From behind Beefy came a snake-like hiss, and a full grown Basilisk emerged from the Technician’s shadow. Beefy187 held up a piece of clothing to the Basilisk’s nose, and the creature visibly took in the scent embedded within the fibers.

“Wait a second, I recognize that, that used to be mine before I lost it a while back,” Sprig panted, still in severe pain.

“Ah, yes, you’ve finally caught on to how I’ve controlled who they killed. But there’s no time to waste on a celebration of your revelation. I’m on a strict time table, you see. Just remember one thing in the afterlife: All of Thrane brought upon the revenge of the Silent Ash by its own actions.” As Beefy finished speaking, the Basilisk beside him spit a fountain of acid at Sprig. Sprig however, had been able to correctly predict the attack, so he successfully rolled out of harm’s way before he was struck by the deadly substance. The Basilisk, seemly realizing long range attacks wouldn’t work, leaped directly onto Sprig and began biting into the man’s flesh ferociously. “And now, for CCRunner ,” Beefy said. He took and his rifle, and took aim. And then two shots rang out throughout the entire hall.

There in the doorway of the Communications Room, stood Commander Frozen, a smoking rifle in his hands. The Electrical Technician Beefy187, a look of pure astonishment forever frozen upon his face, fell to the floor dead, as did the Basilisk mauling the Ex-Commander.
Spoiler :
The Electrical Technician Beefy187 was a member of the Silent Ash!

“It’s your turn next Ex-Commander,” Commander Frozen said. He approached Sprig whose loose clothing had now been completely torn off and observed a gruesome sight. He saw that Sprig had grown inhumanly muscular, but that also the man’s skin had turned gray and tumors were swiftly growing to cover up all of the man's wounds. As this was happening, black smoke was beginning pour from the dead Electrical Technician’s body, but Commander Frozen was so taken in by Sprig’s mutations that he didn’t notice.

“Commander Frozen, the black smoke!” the dying CCRunner croaked as he tried to warn his comrade.

Hearing his warning, Commander Frozen spun around in alarm, only to be greeted by a blast of acid to his face from the Basilisk that had just finished emerging from Beefy’s body. Before the Basilisk could do anything else however, CCRunner spent his last well of energy to raise his pistol just enough to fire. And that was all that was needed. The Basilisk took a direct hit to the head, shattering its skull and killing it in the process. With this completed, CCRunner passed on to another realm.

The Agent Smoker CCRunner was a Versatile Defense Force Agent!

The Agent Commander Frozen was a Versatile Defense Force Agent!

Sprig, now tumor covered from head to toe, stood up unsteadily on his feet and caught his breath. He reloaded his gun and waited for his body to finish healing. Within a minute or two it was complete, and now Sprig had some many abnormal growths on him that he was starting to lose some of his mobility. "I've got to finish what I started," he said to himself as he set off to find the last survivor besides himself. He headed out to the main room which was now silent and shouted, "Come on out Askthepizzaguy! It's time we ended this once and for all."

And to Sprig's surprise, the cook actually answered and came out of his hiding spot. "If you so wish it," Askthepizzaguy replied. He then fired a flare from a flare gun right at Sprig, which caught the Ex-Commander off gaurd, blinding him. As Sprig was blinded Askthepizzaguy gritted his teeth and then unloaded his whole clip of ammo for his High Powered Rifle into Sprig. But Sprig was still standing, bleeding profusely from his many wounds. He was still smiling, but it was not the same smile from before; it was now a sad smile. His eyes now readjusted, Sprig charged the cook and shot him squarely in the just repeatedly. Askthepizzaguy never stood a chance.
Spoiler :
The Cook Askthepizzaguy was innocent!

Sprig's body immediately went to work by covering up its wounds with tumors, and as it did Sprig became more and more immobile. By the time it was finished, Sprig lay on the ground, completely unable to move. He was now unable to eat, unable to drink, unable speak. He didn't even look human anymore. He had been able to save himself from his misery, only to fall into his self set trap. All thanks to the dark radiance.

Spoiler :
The Ex-Commander Sprig, though still alive, wanted everyone else dead!

This was a well run game and it looked fun, congrats Frozen...though I was only lurking at the end here, read through some earlier updates, but crazy finish.

Also  at all the actual players...looks like a surprise for them to figure out.

Excellent write up! Freaking Sprig

By the way, the VDF was completely non-innocent. If you hadn't guessed from us attacking you guys in this update.

@ Frozen: Can we expect role PM's to be out anytime soon, especially Sprigs?

By the way, the VDF was completely non-innocent. If you hadn't guessed from us attacking you guys in this update.

I think I'll just take this opportunity to say "I knew it!"

So... wait. CCRunner and Csargo were both lynched, CG got vigilante-killed, and everyone else got killed by the various abilities and weapons people had?

Thanks Frozen for a game well hosted. Even though you did keep throwing me curveballs :P

Was there any other way I could get healed apart from the stone?

My strength at the end was 7 btw.

I really did wonder about beefy, but felt he acted far to innocent... for the last 3 days i really thought civG was the last silent ash.

I really did wonder about beefy, but felt he acted far to innocent... for the last 3 days i really thought civG was the last silent ash.

So did I. I figured there were 3 of both teams, not 4 VDF and 2 Silent Ash. And I also thought that the one who was keeping the electricity running of all people would have to be innocent.

I wassn't quite aware what moral did... but lights and heat seemed to be a big boost. also getting power to the kitchen.

Lol i was a serial killer who never actually killed, i had the option to do so during the day. They only time I sent in orders to kill was to kill Csargo just in case he didn't get lynched. Also it was the chemist who killed CivG. That was nothing to do with me though...

@ Frozen - the second to last paragraph needs a tweak. I'm guessing at this point you were getting a bit blurried eyed as I often get when doing writeups :D but otherwise I can't contain my joy :D

I dodged Pizzas scumdar and I take that as my medal of honour :p

I really hated the very existence of the agents. Since I had no idea of what they were capable of. I wanted to be in control

Hmm.. didn't we try killing Sprig one night? How did he survive that?

Anyhow good game Frozen :goodjob:
And congratulations to Sprig :D

See, I suspected Sprig after he lynched me. There was malice there, a sort of trickery that implied that he was glad we were both gone.

From what I understand, civplayah was also a Silent Ash. When he escaped, he snapped Seon's neck.

Yes, I was hoping for "Oh noes we only lynched one Silent Ash so far and we're doomed" effect but looks like some people realized it.

I had made the case pretty clear that if choxorn/rhawn was innocent then the VDF were guilty, it was the only thing that made sense from choxRhawns ability. I Myself was wondering what to do about them, had to get choxRhawn lynched to see if they were innocent or not. I had no idea if i would be able to kill them.

What was the Silent Ash VC?

Sprig, Congrats on the win. I take it that you wanted me to steal the Strange stone from you so you could kill me that night?

If so, I'm glad I went after Nictels' medicine...even if it did get me killed...

Wow, sprig, nicely played. A well-deserved win, from what little I can gather. :goodjob: Also, Beefy, congratulations for evading the scumdar and surviving till the end. You are as sneaky as a raccoon. :D

And of course, thanks to Frozen for a well-hosted game, and sorry for not making particularly good use of my item (I didn't know anything that was going on, at any point during the game, and all of my votes were random votes).

By the way, Diamondeye: thanks for being innocent. Seriously, I was so sure I was being played for a fool by the time I died: another day alive and I'd have joined that bandwagon on you for sure.

Gahahahahahhahahahahahaha! This game ended just the way I hoped for...except even Better!

:mwaha: my revenge onthe silent ash is complete! (and the innocents can't gloat either :p)

I are evil.

Umm Frozen, a rather small detail, but I think I fulfilled my personal goal as well. You know with sprig winning and all.

What was the Silent Ash VC?

IIRC our combined strength had to be higher then the remaining towns.

By killing townies, our morale rose and it gave me extra strength sometimes. But that wasn't enough for the victory

Also thanks to my team mates. Well played :goodjob:
