OB04 - Five Is The Magic Number

I've never played a conquest game by vassals. Does the last Ai put up more resistance before becoming your vassal, or will just capitulate at the same time as it would have if it wasn't the last free AI?
I guess we'll find out soon enough?

Razed three of Vicky's cities, but she still won't capitulate. Her Majesty's Navy is on the rampage, but with Optics and caravels (extremely large amounts of them), we should be able to wipe out at least her southwestern islands. After that, lets just pray that she'll cave in.

I didn't mention it, but I have both Babylon and Ulundi set to navy building. Vicky has at least 6 destroyers out and about, so our navy will have to be.. massive.

If we can, we should try to send out a distraction navy for Vicky to chase after.

I love how the OB series allways passes through the "we need more ships phase!!"

Although her destroyers are scary a nice tempting chain of Caravels away from where the action really is should tempt her away for the brief window to send the troops across in galleys.

Have fun Ozbenno

Ralph

Desperate times require desperate measures. Every turn Ulundi and Babylon can't produce a caravel or galley in 1 turn they are whipped. We probably have a limited time to get to Vicky before she has infantry.

In any case, we really only have a chance at those two southern island cities, if she won't capitulate we won't be able to get across to the others at all.

Our allies have no navy (or it has already been sunk by Vicky).

I start putting cities on wealth as we need no new troops.

Eventually I launch two fleets, one from each city.

I've just got enough caravels to make it I think.

The fleet won't return back home though.

Neither will the troops.

At Liverpool, I spot two destroyers and even though its not bombarded down to 0%, I still should have the troops to take down the destroyers.

Problem is at the end of 10, no sign of capitulation.

We can get a couple of techs for peace I'm sure. Steel and Printing Press or Education would be good (default offer was Banking and Divine Right).

I think now the plan should be to take peace, build up an navy and get into position to land next to her 4 remaining cities as quickly as possible (using the whip) and surely she should be toast. We maybe need to research Astronomy for frigates and Galleons (if only for the extra movement). We should be able to with Galleons land next to all 4 cities the turn we declare. We have plenty of ground troops just no real navy so guess who's up?

We've got some well promoted troops stranded on three islands down south we could pick back up.

If we get peace and turn research back on and change builds from wealth to research, we should get Astronomy in a few turns.

Build us a navy Ralph!

Some excellent sets! :goodjob: Based on when I last saw the save, I would not have thought an amphibious landing was possible. :nope: Well done!

I start putting cities on wealth as we need no new troops.
I recall reading somewhere that an AI won't capitulate until their power rating is half of ours. Even though we don't really need the troops, it might be worthwhile to continue building them. If nothing else, it will continue to boost our power rating while her is dropping. :dunno:

I didn't know that. Well once we're at peace, start pumping out the troops again. Might be an idea to try and upgrade as many as possible before peace if we look like close to double her power.

Had a look at the save and she appears to be below 50% of our power due to the gentle ministrations of Ozbenno so that might not be the issue?

Will hold off peace for a turn or two just in case but she has a suspicious looking transport I don't want her to get up to any mischief with...

I will aim for steel and printing press for peace as Ozbenno suggests as they are the most immediately useful techs but doesn't seem likely we will be able to trade for Astronomy so it will have to be researched the hard way..

Also can't puzzle out why Ramesses hasn't considered breaking free as he appears to be over the % limits for breaking free???

Well I'm not exactly a guru when it comes to this vassal stuff, so I don't know. :dunno: I just remember reading something about cutting their power in half and taking their capital before they will capitulate. Of course, we've already razed London ...

So Ozbenno has commanded me to build us a navy….

Now looking at our forces we can see why .. Up to our necks in troops and not an ocean going vessel in sight
STARTNONAVY.jpg

Well I start by taking peace with Vicky as she is below 50% in power and we want to get started on the Astronomy plan. Now in classic irritating AI style she won’t give us both of Steel and Printing Press for peace, so in the end I take Printing Press and what little gold she has. Although Steel might be more use militarily Printing Press will get us to Astronomy faster.

After a heavy bit of MM and setting up deals like this for any spare Ai Gold out there we get the research of Astronomy down to just over 10 turns.
RamessesGold.jpg

Now of course this is my excuse for going over the normal 10 turns as I am just obeying our mighty leader and building a navy (seriously post the MM it was 10 turns of largely hitting enter and I figured you wouldn’t begrudge me a few builder turns as long as I didn’t steal the fun war turns at the end!!)

Now alongside astronomy we do need some cash for upgrades and we hatch a wee plan in aiming for a GM from Cuzco (as we haven’t got one yet) who will pop out with a bit of luck in time for upgrading our meagre caravels / galleys to Galleons and Frigates to assist the naval building process.
merchantPlan.jpg

So 10 turns later Astronomy in and we avoid bad luck on the GP front
Merchantpops.jpg

popping our merchant who is despatched of to Ramesses for a trade mission.

In the meant time I had been feeling sorry for the troops that Ozbenno had suggested wouldn’t return from the Islands and have ferried them back with the few galleys we had. There are some nicely promoted Grenadiers in there who will come in useful

Post Astronomy I decided to do the 5 turns needed to get Steel in as Cannons will certainly help.

Obviously I was furiously assembling a navy whilst this happened so how have we done
Nowwehaveanavy.jpg

Well I played 17 turns but hopefully the next player will enjoy their new toys!!

Where are they? Well roughly assembled into two fleets for attacking Hastings and Canterbury. They haven’t arrived yet but this means whoever is up can put them on the spot they want

An absolutely amazing job on the navy, Ralph! :wow: Absolutely amazing!

I notice that New Madrid is in revolt. So I send a bunch of spare (and obsolete) troops up there to see about preventing the city from flipping.

And then after pressing enter, I went in to have a look at the log ... only to have the game crash on me. :twitch: So I loaded the save back up and tried again, only to have it crash again. I have no clue what is going on, but I cannot look at the log for this game. Other saves open the log without any problems; it is just this one.

Anyway, after pressing enter half a dozen times, our forces are finally in position. We are going after Oxford, Hastings, and Coventry.

ob041903adoverviewjy5.jpg

And yes, Victoria has Infantry! I scouted out the defenses of Oxford earlier. And from the looks of the cultural borders, it seems she has planted a new city on the mainland.

After declaring war, our 2 Galleons off the coast of Oxford were moved into position. They had no Frigate support, so the 60% cultural defenses remained. But the first 3 Grenadiers all had 11xp, so they got amphibious and pinch promotions. They, of course, died but did cut the strength of the lone defender in half. Three more Grenadiers and the city fell. Our boats skedaddled for home.

ob041903adoxfordrm5.jpg

Next up was Hastings. It turns out it was also being defended by a lone Infantry. My original plan was to land our forces atop that forest, but her Destroyer was blocking my path. So I opted for an amphibious assault, as well.

ob041903adhastingsb4bs9.jpg

Our Frigates reduced the 60% cultural defenses down to a more reasonable 21%. Next I suicided a couple of amphibious Grenadiers against the city. Our other units already had promotions, though. Needless to say, we lost some highly promoted troops taking her latest capital.

ob041903adhastingsvg2.jpg

Since she still refused to talk, our forces sailed into Coventry. It was now her capital and was also being defended by a lone Infantry.

Coventry only had 40% cultural defenses, so our Frigates reduced them to rubble. Using the same drill as before, I promoted some fresh Grenadiers to amphibious (and pinch if they had the xp) and assaulted the city. She lost not only the city, but the Great General that had just spawned.

ob041903adcoventrycn8.jpg

And after reducing Victoria to only 2 cities on the first turn of the war, she still refused to talk. I was hoping she would capitulate.

Vicky's navy counter attacks on the IBT. We lose 2 empty Galleons and 2 Frigates. And, she still refuses to talk!

I then suicided some obsolete muskets and ponies and razed her mainland city of Brighton.

ob041904adbrightonvj5.jpg

She is down to her last city, and still refuses to talk to us. :gripe:

Well, it is a 2 turn sail to Canterbury. We would lose 2 more Frigates on the way. And this time, the city is defended by 4 Infantry. So I decided to land the stack.

After suiciding all of our Cannons, those Infantry were easy targets. The city fell without effort and Victoria was no more.

ob041906adcanterburyet9.jpg

The war lasted a whole 3 turns. I think I played 9 turns total. The save is attached. If you all are correct about the vassals counting towards a conquest victory, then all we need to do is press enter.
Ozbenno, would you care to do the honors?

Are you using the BUG Mod Conroe as I am and perhaps that is causing the crash?? Only asking really as I am sure Ruff Hi would like to know if it is an issue!!

Anyway excellent work on taking down Victoria's infantry... and I agree Ozbenno should do the honours...
