OB07 - The First Shall Be Last

Rhoanna's main army is right next to our city with all our offensive forces in it, meaning we can cast Ring of Fire and destroy it easily if we declare.
I also think declaring on Rhoanna is a good idea, especially while Einon and Cardith are going at it. However, I could have sworn that I saw more Hippus troops than that running around during my turns. My guess is she has a lot more troops available than those we are seeing here ...

and right now the other civic for us would be Nationhood, which ideally we'd be running full time.
Given this statement, is diverting to Currency still the way to go? Or would it be better to resume research towards Malevolent Designs? :dunno: If we remain at war, the pillaging should fund the research ...

Sure, let's declare.

Lurker's Comment

Remember, because you're Infernal, you don't suffer the pop and disorder for building Beasts.

January 27: Einon Logos, Charadon, Rhoanna, Cardith Lorda, Thessa, Sandalphon, and Keelyn have won a Time victory!

Lurker's comment:

Yes, I am sure there are no penalties if you are Infernal for building Beasts.

FYI -- I will be out for this weekend and part of next week. Unless the save makes it back around to me by tomorrow, I will need to be skipped. I should be back late Tuesday.

Infernal Ownage

Yep, that pretty sums it up. What a nice turnset. :D We tell Rhoanna what we think of her...

Ooops, there was a Doviello stack once. :D

Hyborem drives his slaves to the front, and they surge on with fresh fury...that city held a garrison of 15 units the turn before. :D

Not today, buddy.

The mouth of hell opens, and swallows up the presented prey...we get awarded with 4 Manes...

Optics is in.

A nice way to get cheap units, so I say yes...

He didn't last long. Those Horsemen are not what they used to be...

But the hordes of hell move on. This city falls next turn.

I've selected Calendar, no beakers invested yet. But it would open up the way to Markets. This game is beginning to get back to a fun ride - we're on track, the Hordes of Hell will pwn!

We need to switch to City States.

We might want to research COL. It's a prereq for Currency (:D) but we could also see if Charadon will trade part of Fanaticism for Optics.

We might want to dogpile Cardith. Alexis looks like she might trade techs between that, resources, OB, and maybe a temporary civics switch.

Swap over to City States first thing and we can up our science rate 30%.

Our next tech choice is taken care of by this trade.

<Another piccie that didn't take, We got Masonry, Code of Laws and Calendar and gave Optics to Charadon.>

Unfortunately no-one else would trade with us to see if we could trade Fanatacism with him (in any case he won't trade it). I set course to Festivals.

And press enter...

The nightwatch resolution gets up.

We capture Khandar.

I start teleporting troops to Oriel to set up a second front to clear Rhoanna's two cities in our south and create a better buffer.

We pop a GS. We can Academy or bulb Alteration. He is left for the moment.

Festivals pops in and we start on Fanatacism.

Berks is taken.

Iosichaard is trashed.

civ4screenshot0006ah8.jpg

So is Heliun

<lost the piccie sorry>

This gives us 4 manes, which are settled over the empire (where great people can be employed). Dis is now size 16.

Ahepetr is captured.

I see an opportunity that may go so I bulb the GS and make this trade. We had a chance to get this for Optics and KotE before but it went before I could do it.

And that was 10. We are in position to take Tia'ran in the next couple of turns. We lost one axe only through the turns so we are definately getting the military advantage at the moment.

I can see two options here. We take out the remnants of Thessa (I reckon she has 5 cities left) and wipe her from the game and see about peace with Rhoanna and turn our attentions elsewhere or we take it to Rhoanna as well.

Charadon won't part with Fantacism yet (we have 15 turns left).

I would vote to finish Thessa and then continue against Rhoanna to grab the cities she captured from Thessa. We would need to at least get to that choke point city of Yanni(??) before making peace with Rhoanna. I hate having to defend multiple fronts. :undecide:

I couldn't gather enough units to comfortably maintain two lines of attack, so I attacked elf cities and just defended against Rhoanna. 20 turns later Thessa is down to what I think is her last city. We're in good shape to finish her and start on the formerly elvish core. It will be nice to get the Song of Autumn. On the Hippus border I fought off a small stack including Magandine, who defensively withdrew a few times but finally lost to a Diseased Corpse. I haven't seen any Hippus War Chariots, just a trickle of Champions.

On turn 590 I warmed up Alexis by declaring on Cardith, trading Gulagarm for 11 GPT, and opening borders. I think the declaration was unnecessary, because I also traded Festivals for 50, which gave us a +4 fair and forthright. I traded Deception, Optics, and Alteration for Feudalism, Construction, and her world map. The map was good, revealing just about everything.

I traded a Nightmare to Sandalphon for 6 GPT and and took OB with Sandalphon and Arturus. I declined OB with Einon so that he wouldn't sneak in a Settler or something. For one thing, I want to leave our unimproved mana nodes free so that we can build a metamagic later. I sold a Nightmare to Einon for 19 GPT, but I didn't notice that he already had Horses until the end of the set (oops), so I didn't make the trade until then.

The OBs didn't do much. All our potential foreign trade routes are blocked by hostiles.

I switched to Consumption on turn 590. I left the slider at a steady negative. I think 0/100 and back to Nationalism would have been better, but I misunderstood how Nationalism was working.

I spread Esus to one city. I'm not sure what that will do, but if we lose our Nightwatch we won't have another opportunity to do it. I declared nationality on the Nightwatch to protect it from an exploring Sidar Ranger.

I lost both veteran Imps to Assassins (oops), and both veteran Chariots: one after taking out a Lightning mage in the open, another softening up a Treant for Hyborem. We took no other losses.

We got Fanaticism on turn 601. We never had a chance to trade for it. I started Malevolent Designs and now we're around 12 turns from finishing it. We might have a shot at Mardero, because I think Charadon was occupied researching Stirrups for part of this set.

An undercouncil vote came up, Charadon vs Alexis. I voted Charadon because he was friendlier. But I didn't really know what would be better.

I noticed we get an extra +1 wealth, beakers, and culture from Temples and Demon Altars. I guess that's an undocumented Infernals feature. Builds in new cities have been Temple -> Market -> units. I might have skipped the Markets, but I thought you guys would just build them after my turnset anyway (:mischief:). I built a Demon Altar in Dis, and then built only Diseased Corpses there (apart from one replacement Imp), since I figure that's the unit type that will see the most action.

I cancelled the Gambling House in Dis. Looking at it again, the 78 hammers required to finish it are like 156 elsewhere, since it's the Heroic Epic city. 156 hammers for 3 GPT is like paying 105 hammers for a 2 GPT Market. So I guess there's an argument for finishing it. But any new ones would cost 300 hammers, and +10% maintenance and +10 crime, for only 3 GPT.

On the last turn I noticed we can trade Alteration+Festivals+490 to Charadon for Smelting. I think we should.

After Malevolent Designs, how about Astronomy? With the GLH from Thessa we have 6-8 trade routes per city, and three overseas trade partners. If we trade it to Charadon, we might finally get him in the game.

380 turns left.

I don't see any reason not to take them all, except the smallest ones.

I've become unhappy with the pace of the game. I might drop out if it doesn't speed up.
