Obesity in pets is common in many countries. Rates of overweight and obesity in dogs in the United States ranges from 23% to 41% with about 5.1% obese.[1] Rates of obesity in cats was slightly higher at 6.4%.[1] In Australia, the rate of obesity among dogs in a veterinary setting has been found to be 7.6%.[2] The risk of obesity in dogs but not cats is related to whether or not their owners are obese.[3]

In Australia, obesity "is their most common nutritional disease."[4] Obese dogs and cats have a higher incidence of arthritis and heart disease. In fact, fatness to the point of health impairment is enough of a concern that Pfizer developed and got Food and Drug Administration-approval for a drug (Slentrol) to treat canine and feline obesity.[5]

Multiple pet owners have been prosecuted for cruelty to animals due to their dangerously obese dogs. Two British brothers were cited in 2006 for cruelty and neglect of their chocolate labrador retriever, "who was allegedly made so obese by his owners that he 'looked like a seal' and could barely waddle a few steps".[6] Cats have also been found to suffer from morbid obesity.

The reasons for obesity of cats and dogs in wealthier countries is not simply a matter of overfeeding. Lifestyle influences also play roles. In modern times, pets are often, for their own safety, not allowed to free roam as they did in the past. Modern day pet foods are a higher quality food, and dogs, as natural scavengers, are prone to gorging themselves whenever the opportunity arises. In evolutionary past, this was the only way as they wouldn't know where their next meal would be coming from. More recently, pet and working dogs were fed on scraps of whatever was left over. Modern food, developed specifically for dogs, are nutritious. However, owners are prone to overfeeding dogs, as they see the bowl of food and think that it looks like not enough. The taste of dog food encourages dogs to want to feed more.

We don't hear about obesity in pets very much but I found this was interesting. I had a cat that was pretty hefty but I don't know if she would qualify as obese.

I thought the idea of charging someone with animal cruelty for an obese pet was a bit much but if the dog was so fat that it resembled a seal and could just waddle that does sound really extreme.

Simple: give him/her lots of food and little or no exercise. My cousin's dog (which is now mine) is like that.

Well obesity is the elephant in the room

How hard is it to not overfeed?

Do you have any idea how much work it takes to feed an animal twice a day instead of just leaving a massive bowl of dry food out?

Especially with a cat that will keep meowing at you until you feed him? Luckily he's not obese. He's actually a healthy weight but he's old, if that makes sense.

We just got a kitten, and he has definitely gotten bigger since we got him. Not only in physical size, but body fat seems more, as if sharing a food bowl with 3 other hungry kittens at the shelter wasn't enough, and now he eats like there's no tomorrow.

Since my cat is old he actually lost a lot of his teeth and we have to give him soft food as he's unable to eat dry food.

My cat is now over 6.5 kg, so I am limiting his food intake - which is hard as hell due to his being a master in emotional blackmail

People are week and want the cupboard love. People keep cats from going out. People are ignorant.

ehhhh some cats should not be let out. Dealing with worms, racoons, etc etc is not fun.

Also I play with out cat about half an hour a day.

Cats need to go out and do their cat stuff. I'm a week into rehabilitating a cat after 18 months in a Parisian apartment, and he's not the cat he was when he had a big old garden leading onto a railway cutting. Does need ongoing worming, but thats life.

I live on the 6th floor. Letting the cat out is not an option. I am trying to play with him at least half an hour a day, but obviously he needs to eat less. He doesn't understand why and look at me as if I was the idiot who doesn't understand what he wants :crazyeye:

Yeah, pets are actually better beggars than children. I have a German Shepherd who should lose 10 pounds but he manipulates my wife better than I ever could. I sympathise, it's hard if you can't let the cat out. I live in a relatively non-urban area and I couldn't let the cat out into my fenced yard if I didn't have the German Shepherd (coyotes).

Have you ever have a dog "give you eyes"? :p Believe me, they can make you feel guilty.

I feed my cat 3 times a day and I love it!
Same here. That said, it took a bit of work deciding on how much food is appropriate for our cat. He had been getting a bit chubby, but he's working his way back down now.

Agreed. Heck, my cat is terrified of the outdoors.

Same here. I'm around him for most of the day, so whenever he wants to, we play.
