OCC Club Mk 3 Game 1: Suleiman

So NE/Oxford/NP/GT ? After bio for the NP any particular tech order for space?

Would you keep forests for preserving post bio? Or is a 4 food farm better?

I tend to horde forests, just because National Park forest reserves are so powerful when combined with Representation. It really depends on whether you are going for an early victory or a late one.

Spoiler :

I should have been nicer to Justinian. Or maybe even less nice and burn some cities, instead of killing a medium sized stack with cataphracts with rifles and then buying peace in the first war.

Hammurabi crumples like wet tissue and then sends 30 cavalry to me to help his master.

The tech situation looked good for a spacerace win.

Civ4ScreenShot0614.JPG

I went for pyramids, then great library, national epic, hanging gardens (very late), oxford, national park, ironworks, globe.

Didn't have to build the globe until very late, after the national park was done and the health cap lifted. Heroic Epic was unnecessary, since I get one unit/turn anyway.

Seriously....global warming in the 1600s?!?!!??!

I hate global warming more than anything else in this game...time to mod it out of the game completely. I think my game is in the bag anyway (emperor level), but i really have no patience for the stupidity that is global warming.

The short story of my game, without screens since I'm at work:

Spoiler :

Full disclosure, I did a few practice runs of the first 50-60 turns as I was trying to master oracling CS like cas did. After figuring out the early library/academy was the key, i got cs the exact same turn he did. I then chopped out mids with my roaded forests - never had any barb worries thanks to a few well placed warriors.

Went up the usual line - aesthetics-lit-music, and got the usual wonders up there (parthenon, GL, sistine for AI denial). Religions were spread out, which made the tech rate feel really slow for the AI - no real lovefests. I finally sided with Justy/Cyrus in the buddhist block, as I realized they'd be most powerful. Pacifism was huge as I generated a ridiculous number of great people in the mid game, and i was able to beg/pay for resources from both of them to delay globe for a long time.

Education in the BCs was pretty cool, and lib around 300 AD, I think. Basically settled every specialist, and at bio, still had 4 forests for specialists.

The one humorous part of my game was that I had built 7-8 jans just in case since i was heathen to many...the turn I teched rifling was the same turn Hammy declared on me - nice timing by the idiot AI! I upgraded my rifles and proceeded to destroy three of his stacks that came in - they had to come through flat land to get to the capital, which meant insta-death.

Was getting relatively close to computers for internet when the stupid global warming ticked me off and i stopped playing...maybe I'll finish it tonight, but I hate having tiles turn useless (especially in an OCC!)

First OCC Win! 2005 AD Nobel/Normal

Spoiler :

Well this was like my third attempt at it but i still won! I opened up like pretty much everyone else who played this and built alot of wonders. I decided to forgoe the henge as i wanted more scientists than priests. I took asethetics from the oracle so i could get to GL/TOA/Pya and Parthenon faster. I did this and then teched to CS asap. I actually got liberalism before 1000AD.
The wonders i got were mids, oracle,Pya,Parthenon,Sistine,GL,Taj, and thats all i can remember. I then teched to Economics/Democracy for the free merchant as i was miles ahead in tech due to the easy diffuculty and large amount of wars that were going on.

My second attempt was a failure because i thought i could go for culture but unfortuanlly fraxis didnt realise that OCC needed a super legendary goal. Not only that but i got dowed on by ragnar. In this attempt there was still religious rivalary and i pissed justinian off because he was toa while i converted to christianity for issy. Issy was a great ally this game. Herself and Cyrus took out toku and i kept bribing her into war with ramesses who was a bit annoying with the AP. Rammy kept voting for viking cities to be returned.

I at one stage got a defensive pact with both issy and cyrus. I was able to enable the per alliance with cyrus so i teched towards the UN and then space as a backup. But justinian dowed on me. Luckily i was able to get gold of cyrus and build a ton of units+choke justianian's attack route with machiene guns. Justianan was willing to take peace after i razed one of his cities. This was the moment when i realised that i forgot to turn on the occ option 0.0, haha. I reloaded and didnt take the city he offered.

I teched toward UN but it was almost impossible to get it as everyone voted for giggles. Giggles and issy were best friends for a good while and if i didnt keep them at war with other people they would have perm allied. I managed to lower theire relations when the free religion vote came around.

Teched to computers with cyrus and got it. Getting me a ton of techs, then i teched towards superconducters first then the other space parts. Towards the end cyrus stupidly built the SpaceEl but we got the win in the end. This was a really fun map, but the religious differences and zealots could cause problems for lower level players. My score was terrible so im not even going to get it. (I didnt get dan quale though but it was less than 5k. Here are the pics and endgame graphs. Thanks for the map happyturtle!
Oh and giggles was going for space aswel but failed miserably, so he took his fustration out on ragnar and killed him.
Also i think one of justianian's cities had a nuclear meltdown, he wasnt nuked because the UN banned nukes.

Ugh.

I started to play. Got an event early on. Thought 'I don't want no bloody events' and started again via custom scenario. All was going great, except I got to education and found out I can't build Oxford, because I didn't check OCC in custom scenario. :crazyeye:

Gonna have to try again later.

@The Oz-Man
Spoiler :
I actually couldnt build them as i forgot to set occ on! So thats why. Still won though.

@michmbk IICR the Caveman2Cosmos mod actually mods Gobal warming out of the game, but man thats alot of new features to worry about with that mod :D

Just finished apollo:

Spoiler :

First screenshot is when I broke 1k mark, the second is finishing apollo. I should have been prepping a shift to production before now I think optimally for space race. I'm in rep/caste/pacifism haven't switched to free market or state property yet. Probably should have burned a GP on a GA and made the switch. National Park takes away coal, but you can still build railroads with it. I have no clue what my end date will be as this will be my second space ever.

I've edited the WB files and reuploaded - they SHOULD all start with OCC checked now. I also put in the 'no events' option in all the 'no huts' files. Sorry for my mistakes - this is very much a learning process for me, but hopefully it'll get better in future games!

Glad to see you found the answer. :D Still the original proposition is interesting. I found a save game and will play on! Not getting Oxford will hurt though. We shall see.

I ended up finishing out - 1930s space win on emperor...despite the stupid global warming in the 1600s...

Spoiler :

As I mentioned, nice early lib date:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-34.jpg

Justy got pretty big, but I was friendly with him and pleased with Gilgy and Rags, so I kept gifting military techs to both Gilgy and Rags so he couldn't take them out. I got stalled badly near the end because I figured 2 AI would research composites quickly, so I saved it for last...ended up having 15 turns with no space parts while I waited to get up there. Didn't really matter as no one was really close to space or culture, and Justinian had a long way to go to get enough for a dom win with me gifting so much to the other two.

Stats and city at the end - at its peak, i was generating about 1050 beakers a turn without building research and 1250 with...that went down considerably when I workshopped everything and started to starve the city down. 30 great people if you count the generals - prob could have/should have farmed more of them if i wanted to with the tech lead and IMP...

1913 - emperor space
Spoiler :

Here is the capital the turn before the end. 44 great people! I'm not sure what I did wrong if anything to get the 1913 date. Except I had no trading partners as everyone was far behind me in tech. Maybe immortal deity is easier in that respect.

@Grashopa
Spoiler :
How did you keep Ramssees or anyone else from going culture?

My game: a bit before Liberalism:
Spoiler :
I'm playing on Monarch. Probably should have gone up to Emperor to make up for foreknowledge of the map. I used cas's sequence of teching to Oracle CS. Went straight into Bureaucracy and Caste, never having been in Slavery at all.

My favourite part of this game is the religious stuff. I knew Isabella and Justinian were in the game. So when Justinian got Buddhism, I was sure Izzy would get Hinduism. Nope! It went to RAGNAR of all people! Then Ramesses got Judaism. I was hoping that Buddhism would spread to me and Hammy and we could have a little love fest, but instead we have a Buddhist block on the North shore, a Jewish block on the East short, and Hinduism in the Southwest (Giggles, Toku, and Ragnar). I figured I was better off having some firm friends than lukewarm everyone by staying unaffiliated, so I burned a scientist on a Golden Age to convert to Judaism, and then when the Pyramids came in a few turns later, to go to Organized Religion and Representation. Other than the GA and the first scientist who was used for an Academy, I've settled the rest of my Greats. I love how quickly they pop, and I'm not even in Pacifism!

I'm bribing Ramesses into wars to keep him down, because he's the strongest AI in my game, and pretty much being Justinian's to keep him from targeting me. I can probably knock down any stack he sends, but if Cyrus dogpiled in, I might be in trouble. I just got Oxford and Sistine built, so now I'm building a proper army. The mountain range west of the city makes a nice defensive barrier, so I'm putting a defensive stack at either end of it, where any invading army would have to walk past. I'd still be vulnerable to Hammy, but he's my BFF, and getting him to join in any war with me is easy.

I'm hoping to use Liberalism for Biology, but not sure I can. Justinian demanded Paper, so I gave it to him. I haven't decided if I'm going for Space, or a PA conquest game. Probably space.

@ michmbk

Spoiler :

Ick. What tech did you get from Liberalism ? Lib sling should be saved for an expensive tech unless the AI was going to beat you to Lib. And if that was the case, you probably traded the wrong techs to the AI. Lib->Bio sling is the best option in OCC if you can pull it off. If you're going NP, obvious for that, but even if you farm everything...Bio is a huge boost to pop and research.

Yes, you got an early Lib...but it is wasted on a relatively inexpensive tech.

@ Grasshopa

Spoiler :

Sometimes it is worthwhile to help set up a religious block so you can get 2-3 AI friendly. It does cost some hammers in missionaries. But...good for defense if they are neighbors. Good for tech trading. Keep feeding them techs where they have 3-4 research options for techs you don't have. Choose one tech route and keep them behind one tech on that route.

I'm having good luck with Events in my game:
Spoiler :
Negative:
* I got the Barbarian invasion one, but it was 4 spearman who were too intimidated by my massive cultural boundaries to try invading. I guess they went off and bothered Justinian instead.
* A tornado destroyed an Ivory camp. I had just gotten the Ivory in a culture flip and immediately sold it off to Hammy so he could make war elephants. I had a worker nearby, so the camp will be rebuilt soon.

Positive:
* Senate scandal: Choice of +:espionage:, +:) or :gold: in the 3 figures. I took the :gold:
* Heartrending ballad: Yeah, I didn't really need the culture, but I had the money to spare from the Senate scandal.
* Jewish Wedding: Plenty of money to earn the +3 diplo bonus with Hammy

Me and Hammy are

As for huts, which I usually don't leave on, I got half of writing (I was midway through researching it) and 61 gold. I encountered another hut, but it had a barb camping on it, and I decided I needed to scout more than I needed to attack a fortified barb warrior on a hill at 30% odds.

cas:

Spoiler :

Totally agree on lib - I'm too lazy these days for much intelligent micro. I just did what I do in standard games - lib/nat/taj. But you're right, I totally should have saved it for bio, or possibly even further up the tree. The tech pace in my game was so slow with all the religious warring that I'm guessing lib could have been delayed until 1300-1400 AD...

The fact that the AI was so far behind prob hurt my finish date - I should have fed them a few more techs to get them to research a few of the space techs for me - I ended up having to self-tech practically all of them (halfway through composites a second AI finally finished it, I think).

happyturtle:

Spoiler :
Grashopa probably built sistine - if you deny that from the AI, their culture win takes a lot longer. No one was even close to culture in my game, despite it lasting all the way to the 1930s.

Voice of unreason:

Spoiler :
I built the library as soon as possible - started mining/pottery/writing, so I'm guessing the library was started about turn 25 or so? That early great scientist allowed for the oracle-cs sling that cas did & I copied...

Defense wasn't really necessary until a few jans for me - I kept a couple warriors stationed for barb defense, and upgraded them along the way - that was all it took.
