Old timer's, what are your thoughts so far?

Is there any way to create that feeling of when you picked up and played your first Civ game?

I doubt civ 6 is going to have its own unique feel fr some reason. Its just a more modded civ 5. I'm not seeing anything radical enough to give me goosebumps.

It's not possible to recreate that feeling because you were changed by experiencing it. You have to appreciate new versions for what they are and not by comparison to the original.

Allow me to wax metaphorical for a moment. You can love many people but no love will ever feel the same as your first love. If you dwell on it, you will be lost in what was and never will be. But you can move on and find new loves that are special in their own ways.

Despite being a new engine, which includes a new AI, etc? Not trying to start a fight, but a modded Civ 5? Come on now.

I think they anticipated this line of thinking hence the emphasis on new engine, AI built from the ground up even though it's essentially the Civ5 team behind it with hexes and 1UPT.

That said, since Civ5 was a really enjoyable experience for me, more power to them for refining the concepts they started rather than introducing big controversial changes... That will be Civ7's job, when they go Candy Crush.

Honestly, as a long time strategy gamer, I welcomed the 1UPT and Hexes as it seemed more natural for the genre. Granted the AI is profoundly derpy, but the AI losing the stacks of death really only highlighted the problem, and the changes to 1UPT and Hexes not the root problem.

I like the route they are taking here, if all of what information they are showing is true. Ed has stressed gameplay to the point it dictated the aesthetics, and talking about the much smarter AI are very good signs.

Granted, I want to see a lot more gameplay, but aside from wanting to ensure that my wife and I can play Hotseat, I haven't been this excited for a new title since III.

Not sure how controversial but unpacking cities is a pretty huge change. Looks very cool to me and I think it will change the way most play the game.

Some of you may have played Warlock, or even Endless Legend, which used a similar feature. I personally thought it was about time they did something like this, considering how real cities are laid out to some extent.

With a "smarter" AI, and not being able to turtle up, I am looking forward to seeing how this will impact game play.

Good point

I'm looking forward to the 'city building' aspects of the game - that's totally new from CiV.

Really? The art style seemed to be giving plenty of people goosebumps...

Disagree. I loved SMAC more than I loved Civ 2. And I loved Civ 4 and 5 about equally.

How much "emotion" and "engagement" I feel for a title is entirely dependent on how much fun I have with it and how much it immerses me in its mechanics and gameplay, regardless of what I experienced with the previous iterations.

I disagree. I have never replicated the excitement when playing my first game of Civ. It looked like Empire on first glance but was the deepest and most engaging thing I had ever seen. SMAC was a blast, but in the end was the exact same formula. The wonderment was a one time thing for me.

Let's see if I can remember:
First game of Civ1, I had no idea what I was doing. Did not know to build improvements. Got bullied by more advanced civs.
First game of Civ2 I thought I know the game, but it still took me a few games to adjust.
First game of Civ3 crushed when I tried building a city.
I don't remember my first Civ4 and Civ5 games.

I am always excited about any new version of civilization. Grognard since 1982 Avalon Hill Bookcase game days. I think they have a better grasp of what fans want ....and are slowly cobbling together an "Ultimate" version of the game that is both playable and fun! we fans always need MORE!

Excited, but also bummed a bit that so much from ciV is staying and that the things I actually care about, like much larger map sizes (when I saw the somewhat simpler graphics on this I was hopeful at first), significant (in my opinion of course) modification to 1UPT, or improved city state mechanics have not been addressed at all.

So...at the moment not super positive but interested, heh.

As a real old-timer (I bought Civ I when it was first released), I can say that this one looks like the best Civ yet and I expect to get it as soon as possible.

I'm in a different frame of life now than when I started. Civ is a big time commitment. Big difference from single guy, free time, to father trying to get his kid not to do what I did. I also evolved from liking to play games, to liking to develop them.

I have been playing civ for 23 years. I was pretty obsessive with civ4 but civ5 surpassed even that and is definitely the civ game I have spent most hours playing. (>2000 hours easily) But also keep in mind 23 years ago I used to play wider range of games and nowadays civ is virtually the only PC game I play.

I am extremely optimistic about civ6. My biggest hope/fear is the AI - I hope it does not go backward from where it is in civ5, given the devs wrote everything from scratch. And by civ5 I mean where it is today with the Artificial Unintelligence mod

I started with Civ II a looong time ago. I played Civ II, ToT, Civ III, Civ IV and Civ V. I absolutely love Civ IV and bought Civ V as soon as it hit the stores, but... that was not it. I hated the new happiness system, I hated how they dumbed it down. I tried to play it again with BNW, but it was just not it anymore. I'm still able to play Civ IV with mods for months, but I can't play Civ V for more than few hours. It's just not the Civ V I always imagined. And now - when I look at Civ VI - it's just the Civ V but looking even worse. Cartoonish graphics, new systems implemented probably just to "add something new and not copy good old things"... I believe that when something works perfectly - you don't change it. Changing it just for the sake of change and showing new things is bad. I'll probably give this game a try if they make graphics more realistic but I have a really bad feelings about it right now.

yeah bro, me too... i felt like i got burned really bad on the last couple pre-orders, so twice bitten thrice shy i guess... lol it went from a strategy to a dumb down grind feel good shiny happy; will wait for the feedback this time

Personally I'm excited. From what I've seen so far, once they work out the kinks (so, third expansion?) this game could be a *huge* improvement over Civ 5. Also, I missed 3, but my favorite civ games (in descending order) are 5,4,2 and 1. So, I have hope the trend will continue.

Nope, the standard to which civ6 will have to compare is the Community Patch. AUI is a baby compared to CP's AI (especially the last 1.7.7 version...)
