OMG! Custom era music folders.

I think you have it wrong about Saladin -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saladin
he did let them walk out.

Okay, without actually going to look it up, Salah ad-Din allowed the citizens to PURCHASE their freedom - and those who couldn't scrape up the money, and there were many, were sold into slavery. And this was only under duress as the Christian defenders made quite clear that they knew Salah ad-Din planned to take revenge, they planned a brutal fight to the death, and promised to destroy every Muslim holy site in Jersualem, including the Dome of the Rock.

Better, mind you, than the Crusaders did at places like oh... (now I gotta go look it up) Millat? I forget the name, it was after the taking of Antioch. Anyways, they massacred the inhabitants wholesale and even took to eating them - yuck.

BUt you have to name them the same as the current MP3s??? That doesn't make much sense?

I know but the soundtrack seems to be defined in the XML audio2Dscripts.xml
and I don't know enough to play with that. So when the game loads it looks for the files defined in this file, hence you need to have the same names.

1) Does adding MP3s to the "normal" assets folder get them to play? I would think that the game would just play what is in there, not look for any specific filename (perhaps wrong). Try delete (back up, of course) all in that folder and put in custom songs in.

As stated above no, IT looks for specific names.

2) Does putting new mp3s in CustomAssets automatically make them play? Do I have to designate them in the 'browse ' thing?

If it is renamed correctly, it seems that the CustomAssets has priority.
The browse thing just replaces all music heard in the game. It works but you don't get era specific tracks.

The renaming thing doesn't make sense, because now I am limited by the # of tracks originally in the game.

yep seems like a mod job.

Allright, I tied a ton of stuff to get things working like I wanted them to....to no avail.

I had a big write up of it to post but since this forum times you out if you dont post after awhile I lost it all due to timing out, and then a windows explorer error :/

Still it all came down to two options.

Built in custom music folder, all the tracks you want, but no age specific tunes.

Or. Put tunes in the my docs/custom assets soundtrack folder, and rename after the originals. This gives you age specific tunes, but youre limited to the number of them you can have.

As said before, we need a modder to fix this I think.

I just spent allot of time trying to get around it and I just cant. :/

You want some sweet Ancient Age music? Try "Mother Tongue", by Dead Can Dance. Lots of tribal stuff, fast...less upbeat than Baba Yetu

Iron Maiden's?

no, from the movie "where eagles dare"....

But I just assumed it would work.....first by adding a folder with the same era subfolders as the original soundtrack (in the sound options menu), but it just mixed them all anyway...

loading specific tune names ? what kinda crappy coding is that ? It is like begging for errors ! No wonder i get a "file missing" message sometimes when i play the game... ;) if the music was in development while they where coding...You get the picture....

Ofcourse you should write the code to load a number of mp3 from each subfolder, no matter what the names are  . All basic programming classes clearly states "make you code as GENERAL as possible, to make changes simple and reuse possible". (in case someone don't figure that out themselfs :mischief: )

I kindda don't like the musics in Renaissance Era. Mozzart's music, although great, seem don't fit in games.

The open menu music is great! Remind me of the Lion King's theme. Besides, classical era's BGM is also good.

Here is allready topic in custom forum about customing music to game :)

There is a pretty simple solution.

Create different folders on your hard drive called civ 4 music - stone age, civ 4 music classical, civ 4 modern etc. No sub-folders - make each one a seperate directory in themselves on c drive.

Then, go to audio options in game, then tick the 'custom music folder' option, and there it should ask you to pick the path to the folder. Upon entering the game, select your 'stone age' folder. then when you go up in eras just change the destination path accordingly. No modding required ;)

As for what music I used, well the stone age music is incredibly dull, so I use the lion king sound track (well, apart from the love songs that is).

I think the medieval music is pretty good, so don't mess with that.

For more modern eras I use the Thomas Crown affair, Tailor of Panama and red alert soundtracks.

modern era I'm now using brian Eno- Music for Airports
Spiritulized- various
Fourtet- My angel keeps rocking back and forth
and also some stuff from KLF- chillout

should really be called the avant garde age ;-)

Kids kids kids ;), take it from an old-timer (44), get Patrick Cowleys "Primative World"; you can't beat that song for the first era. I use the theme music from Impieralism 1 for the Industrial age. Enya works great for Ren and Medival. I hate most the songs in Modern, put a lot of techno pop in there.

Now here's the problem: Stupid me, got all excited when I got the game, and addedd 3-5 songs in each era's folder. Then I deleted all the songs I disliked. As everyone above is finding, this does not work, and since I deleted the original songs, I have no way of renaming them properly. Guess I'll have to ask a friend who has the game to send me the names.

That is REALLY a foolish way of coding a "custom" music addition to a game :crazyeye:

here you are...

and have fun listening...

(btw. i really have to customize my music folder... this music is getting annoying... could you also put shortcuts (to files and/or maps) in this folder?)

I guess i was that second person who bought the predator soundtrack. Back when soundtracks were just orcestra scores from the movie, it sucked pretty hard I thought.

Gibbie -

There was never a Predator soundtrack released. I think there WAS one released for Predator 2, which I didn't want... mine is from Predator, the original, which I am almost positive never was released...

Thanks Uzil! I used the above list to rename my MP3s correctly. Since I also removed quite a few songs, I deleted the XML section that activated those non-existant songs.

But did it work, not really. For some reason, one of my new songs "may" play when I very first start or load a game, but after that, it's the same old songs, many repeating over and over again in a row.

After hours of trying, I simply gave up, and used Joh's suggestion; which worked perfectly. All the songs in my list play perfectly, but I have to go in and change the music folder every era (which is a pretty harsh game-flow stopper). But at least it works, somewhat. . .

I listen to "A Clockwork orange" OST. Mostly Beethoven which fits well the game. I also love the synth versions of beethoven. It has a "retro-futuristic" flavour that i love.

When playing as India, I listen to Ravi Shankar

totally! Overture to the sun would be just the best song for this game...

Ukrainian national anthem, dance of the knight and walk of the Valkyries...

I really hope Firaxis changes the way the music is read from the default directories in a patch, i wonder why they made it so it would only read the default file names?

I decided that, since I liked most of the original music too (except modern and ancient age) that I would set up my music the 'hard way' using the in-game custom music and just changing my directory as i moved through each age. I attached a list of the music i added in case ppl are looking for ideas :)

I haven't played through with this yet so a few things might need changing to suit better.
