On the use of "ciV" as an abbreviation for Civilization V

Do you think the abbreviation "ciV" for Civilization V should be encouraged or discou

Bullcrap. There is a poll that's stickied that let's you choose between CiV and Civ 5. People have chosen iterations of CiV by over a 2 to 1 margin. I was merely refuting the poll on here that was trumpeting the fact that people love Civ 5 rather than CiV. Like this thread actually means anything. Just a collection of grumblers and complainers. ;)

The amount of butthurt on these boards over the silliest little things.

Do I need to explain the difference between confusion caused by typing CiV and an icon to you again? How would you prefer me to do it? Would slowing it down help or would you like me to turn it into some form of children's cartoon?

D is for the difference between text and an icon...

I was thinking of posting a thread on this a couple of weeks back on the subject of Civ Nomenclature to see what people thought was the proper way to abbreviate Civilization V. I've always preferred Civ V myself, even without the space as CivV, but I don't like the ciV abbreviation as it just seems wrong to me - it doesn't start with a capital letter, but it ends with one...argh! Whilst I much prefer the roman numeral V over decimal 5, Civ5 is also quite acceptable in my books - clear, and easy to understand.

Although in saying that, this is all a little pointless - but interesting...

This is pretty much my perspective as well...

I did a quick totting up of the current votes (700 total) on the competition thread and found

281 votes for three character icons of the form ciV
252 votes for four character icons of the form Civ5/CivV
167 votes for a Centered V (with/without other chars)

Not sure what this tells us except that there is no clear consensus, I just like playing with numbers.

Civ5 is best. In general, we should use terms that search engines or forum search can clearly distinguish without problem.

"Civ5 strategy" will give far more relevant results than "ciV strategy".

The matter is settled then

That's got to be the most important reason on either side of the argument - search engines tend to ignore character case based criteria.

That's an excellent point TF. Civ5 it is!

Ah, it's good to see that those running the show are siding with the sensible option too.

I'd not considered the search engine aspect, but that's a very good point.

I'd be interested to see if there is an administrative veto on the icon vote - since the current leader is almost identical to the Civ 4 icon.

Seriously?

The poll is misleading and essentially meaningless. On scale with the rage against 1UPT ones. The Op asks us to overlook the icon that will in all likelihood be used for ciV on these boards which is *shock* *gasp* actually what he abhors the most.

It isn't really 6%.

I would ask you to please keep personal accusations out of this thread. Explain your own opinion - don't try to put words in my mouth and discredit mine. Since I am the OP and the one polling the forum members for their opinions, I am leaving my opinion out of this for the moment, and you'll do well to notice I haven't voted yet.

If you believe the poll to be biased in any way, please explain to me how I can change it, or post another poll with the changes.

EDIT... By the way, what is the meaning of the picture?

Hehe - it's no surprise game/film studios continually churn out the same thing again, and again, and again, and again. It's because if you ask people, that's what they say they want. And it is actually genuinely what they *think* they want. Thankfully a few creative types know what idiots we are and manage to get something different out from time to time - and from what we've seen so far it looks like Firaxis are doing us proud with the game itself. Now if they'd gone the extra mile and had the guts to give the thing a completely new name, or even just a subtitle like "Revolution"/"Network" etc., maybe it would have saved us some trouble.

For the icon I actually voted for the current leader. It's partly due to the fact that the V in the logo stands out most, and all but 1 of the poll entries play with the V theme. I think it's fine as an icon.

It's unfortunate that its purpose is to help easily identify Civ 5 things but it cannot be easily identified as Civ 5. A colour change would do it, just something to make it visually different from the current 4 icon at a glance. CIV on a white background for example.

I dunno. It just seems silly to use one that is so similar to an existing icon.

It should be discouraged because the heathens that know not of Civilizations would be confused by it. It also looks tacky & a bit silly to be honest.

I hate it, it looks like it's civ4. because of the i in front of the v.

And we conquered the romans for a reason. Not to have their crappy numbering system. :)

I just use civ4 and civ5. I know the pain of typing one extra character.

"ciV" is past the realm of stupidity.

ciV is fine. I can see the reason for not using it for search function reasons but as an icon it's fine. Nothing to get worked up about.
