I asked the good Lord's help in all this mess, and He came through with an nice little slice of providence.
Friday afternoon I went to the computer store intent on buying a new one. The problem was that I was fairly unfamiliar with the area. I had wrote down the instructions, along with the address and phone number. I was about a third of the way there when I remembered that though I did remember to bring what was arguably the most important part, the internet purchase screen that showed the options I wanted, I did forget to bring the sheet with the directional instructions. No big deal I thought, I know the streets to turn on. I drove around for over an hour once I was there and couldn't find it and gave up because their closing time was nigh. Maybe that location went out of business, but they sure didn't update the website if so.
So I resolved that I would get directions for going to their other site and head out with ALL the paperwork I needed the next day they were open for business (today).
Saturday I'm at work trying to find a monitor over the internet that I found most pleasing, and it was tough, so it took quite a long time (not knowing much about LCD's doesn't help matters). Around time to leave I stumbled into a website I had never heard of before www.theeldergeek.com and thought it might be nice to go over when I got back to work tuesday night. Just then the guy on next shift calls in and says he just woke up, so he was goinig to be 20 minutes late. This guy is about 95% of the time, early instead. Hmm, might as well look eldergeek over a little more, considering I don't have enough time to do much else, but enough time to be totally bored unless I did something.
Well, I found something on this 0.0.0.0 problem. It turned out the document was actually a Microsoft one and I have no idea how I got on their website, as I thought I was searching eldergeek and he must have had a google search instead. It looked as though the document had almost everything Comcast had me to do, but one or two additional things as well (concerning DHCP Client). I'm pretty certain they didn't have me edit the registry, but that was one of things prescribed. When the next shift came in, I told the guy that providence seems to have saved me somewhere around $1500 by his coming in late. Why is that? Because not only could I not find the place friday, but I wouldn't had looked that website over any at all if he had been in on time, which of course means I would had bought a pc before I had to come to work the next time. Glory to God!
I have found a few things that were peculiar. My DHCP was set for "Tcpip Afd NetBT SYMBTI". The document said that you needed everything but the last value. I happened to be running on my new Linksys ethernet card and that worked, I WAS UP!
One last thing though. I decided that it's likely that my on-board card is fine too, so I decided to uninstall the Linksys one and run off of it. It wouldn't work. Then I looked at the DHCP value again. It was the same, so I decided to key in the old additional value it had. No go. Then, since I had been jacking with this stuff enough I was starting get an instinct for it, I noticed something. I believe on that DHCP setting you can do some sort of properties and finally get to a menu that shows those values. The thing is, there was the first three values and there was a forth. The forth WAS NOT SYMBTI, but SYMBDI (looks fairly similar). I keyed that as the fourth value and she was up and running.
Thank you Lord!
