I'm here to share my experience on Online speed, specially, online, continent, deity, disaster level 2, random map. Trading/Alliance with AI is banned since there is problem with AI valuing things on online speed.

Continent maps perfectly balance land and sea.


T0: Norway

Although it works better on slower game speed, on online speed it is still best of the best.


T1: Egypt, Korea, Maori, China, Aztec, Nubia, Sumeria, Russia, Greece, Indonesia

These Civs grant you a significant bonus throughout the game. Edited, add Indonesia to Tier 1 since I just realized the strength of getting Religious Settlement as early as T6.


T2: Scythia, Australia, America, Ottoman, Japan, Zulu, Spain, Persia, Rome, France(Medici), Macedon, India, Persia

These Civs either gives you a moderate bonus throughout the game, or gives you a timing that you can't resist. (for example, Spanish Conquisidator)

T3: England, Brazil, Germany, Arabia, Cree, Inca, France(Eleanor), Kongo, Inca, Mapuche, Mongolia, Netherlands, Phoenicia, Poland, Scotland, Sweden

These Civs are a little better than blank, for their ability may be used in some time. It seems that Kongo and Inca has good starting bias so may be better than T2 Civs with bad starting bias(such as Japan). But I don't know how starting bias works so cannot fully conclude this. If they born on same quality of landmass Japan shall be better.

T4: Georgia, Khmer, Mali, Canada

Either totally blank or negative Civ, at least in my experience.

Curious (I don't really play quick speed or for fast win times) but what about Egypt is good for this? I like them but I always play them with the feeling that they're probably still not as good as most other civs.
 
Could you put a screen shot of the game creation screen? This sounds interesting to me, and I would like to give this format a shot.
 
I'd guess Egypt is good in the same way Sumer is good - a strong early UU (the chariot archer is now much cheaper than it was) and a spammable ui that give you a valuable yield (though not quite as valuable as the ziggurat).

Thank you. I think I'll try these scenarios (one per civ) out :) I will probably have to bounce back and forth between Deity and Emperor though.
 
What makes Norway so good? The pillaging? Is it better on faster gamespeeds comparatively?
 
Started off as Alexander (he is first in alphabetical order). I did fine on expanding, and I did fine on defending against the Trajan wave of attacks. It was just that his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th waves finally beat me down, combined with an attack from the Incas.

Conclusion: my expansion-type difficulties and incompetencies are being hidden due to the fact that my diplomacy is so bad that I just get slowly but surely beaten down. I did get up to 4 nice cities, and on turn 165 I still have 3 left. Finally Trajan was able to take one, partially because the Incas were tieing down so many of my units in the north.

Still. This is the best I've ever done on Deity. I have many turns of the game saved, including some of the earlier times. so I will go back to Emperor, then up to Immortal, then replay this game and see if I do better. It was fun :)

The best part of my defense is: Trajan went to concentrate on my weaker city. I took some units from my stronger city and baited him to come after the strong one. So instead of him taking the weaker one, he split his forces in two, and he lost his entire force for nothing. Overall, I lost very few units compared to his losses. But Trajan plus the Incas combined were enough to finally overwhelm me.
