Open-ended vs. Linear games

i never played morrowind. is it actually better than oblivion, cause that was pretty much my favourite ever game, excluding cod4 and civ4.

I found Morrowind to have a more focused setting and more believable world. The gameplay and interface of Oblivion is an improvement on that of Morrowind, but sadly, for me, Morrowind gives me slightly better memories.

I still am trying to find what it is exactly about Oblivion's province and its rendition that doesn't click as well for me as that of Morrowind. Morrowind felt really remote and somehow the characters less contrived. The main story was a lot less annoying too.

I am unsure of how you will feel though, having played Oblivion first, you'd need to expect a few annoying things from the slightly more archaic interface.

Oblivion was absolutely awesome and it's only competitor is Morrowind
Oblivion's leveling system is a blessing and a curse, the monster stay competitive with you (Most like, some dislike) however with a little bit of planning say 20 minutes, you can figure out how to even the odds considerably

Wow, will you be the first person I ever talk to who likes the monster-leveling system of Oblivion? I quickly modded the game to reduce the extent of it.

I'd much rather have a game where the world is built in a way that says "yes, if you go there at the beginning, you will die". It's the game's developers job, or next challenge, to figure out a way to have an open-ended game world where they don't use the cheesy vanilla Oblivion system.

Fallout 3 was a step in the right direction, as monsters do level with you in many places, but there are many other places where they remain the same.

In theory, a diverse and heterogeneous game world would have enough zones to offer a variety of places to go, whatever the level of your character may be, and yet retain relatively stable encounters in these places, unless some event in the game justifies the change. Oblivion gates were also cheesy. Most games I play these days I completely ignore the main quest in Oblivion.

EDIT: don't get me wrong, I played a whole lot of Oblivion, in retrospect though, I think my experience with Morrowind back in 2003 was more enjoyable.

No, most dislike, few like.

Enough of the other positives in Oblivion kept me from hating the leveling system out rite, although I think Morrowind nailed it perfect, and Fallout 3 was easy period.

Oblivion's leveling system was a menace, because I'd get obsessed with trying to level efficiently - i.e. learning only right skills, trying to avoid "wasting" skill points etc etc...

Making sure you'd level the right skills in order to get these +5 attributes...

There were things in this game that justified making sure you didn't level up as fast as you could sometimes. Making sure you didn't go to bed, etc. It was counter intuitive at many times. There are different ways for a character building system to be complex AND rewarding, this was only complex and counter-intuitive. Like a school project or something. At least there were mods.

*USELESS CRAP*

It's a ROLE PLAYING GAME not a POWER GAMING I MUST HAVE TEH BIGGEST DICK OF DOOM+9999.

And maybe amongst your group of friends it's not disliked but pretty much most of the discussions on the web i've seen plus the dozens of mods replacing it indicate that most people hate it.

And that's why Oblivion's leveling system sucks. Have fun sitting in some corner spamming restoration for hours while rats slowly chew your heavy armor

Here in California it is most hated. Cyrodil is an empty, dead world, that's the typical trade off going open-ended.

I don't see it as a cost of open endedness, i see it as a cost of devs not taknig enough tiem to fill it!

Someone needs to figure out the AI and mdoels and animations for all the little creatures, that is what is always missing.

On a more serious note there is no game that beats Fallout 1-2 in terms of awesomness. And those are open ended games.
But obviously I wouldn't want an arcade/platformer to be that very open ended...I tried rayman 2 The great escape.

Bah...

There's also another game I forgot to mention -- I've seen it several times, especially in cheap horse games. Where you're given "missions," but there's really no time limit between them, so you can do whatever you want in-between.

In one of these games, I remember that they would have a "week". and on certain days of the week somebody would call you or something, and you'd have to do the mission.

Everscamps?

An Everscamp is a Scamp spawned by the Staff of the Everscamp. Before the quest, they will follow Rosentia Gellenus everywhere she goes. After the quest is completed they will remain in Darkfathom Cave forever. They respawn almost immediately when they are killed, making them good for combat training. If used for Marksman training, note that an Everscamp's body remains long enough after death to be looted for the arrow(s).
