Option for left-click movement?!

(By the way, you should know the first computer I ever laid hands on was a MAC with an old tv set for the monitor, before I ever saw DOS. I was even lucky enough to play games on it, though I didn't use a one-button mouse for that but a joystick ;). No need to make cheeky assumptions about what I don't know.)
I think you may be referring to an Apple II, rather than a Mac.

Apple, Mac, it's all the same to me (I think Macintosh is what I should have said). You're probably right - my memory from when I was that young is not so good. :)

FYI Apple basically invented the GUI

I don't want to be picky :mischief: but, since Civfanatics always seemed such a nice place to have interesting talks and to learn with others, I would like to point out that:

The GUI was invented by Xerox at PARC (Palo Alto Research Center). It was used in two or tree different machines before it was used by Apple in Lisa. (Yes, i'm an old f@rt!)

If someone wants to read about it, they can alway check Wiki or something like that.

Other than that, I think that is a matter of preference... I used both and I must admit that I prefer the two mouse buttons. Having context sensitive commands available on RMB is a big plus for me. :goodjob:

Back to topic please...

A more important issue IMO is whether people will still be able to move units using the keyboard. I'm still curious what keys the moves will be mapped to because the numpad on keyboards is very square. On the other hand, the main section of the keyboard where the letter keys are actually suits a hex grid a lot better and as an example, the six movement directions might be assigned to the keys U,I,O,J,L,M, comma and full-stop.

s and surrounding keys maybe? Goes very well together with the normal shooter controls.

Do we know if there will be "fixed views" or if it's a "free camera mode"?

With fixed views the keypad might be useful:

If the hexes are align "horizontally", like this <_>, you can use 7, 8 ,9 for moving to top hexes and 1,2,3 to bottom hexes.

If they are align "vertically", you can use 1,4,7 for left hexes and 3,6,8 for the right ones.

On the other hand, with "free camera mode" you will probably have to play with the mouse.

A free camera mode is not likely to be the default because in civ games it's mostly unnecessary. In civ4, pressing ctrl (or shift) + left arrow or right arrow turns the camera a bit for those awkward moments selecting a unit or city behind a war elephant or tall ship. The flying camera was kept mostly hidden from the average user because it was glitchy/not very polished.

Based on screenshots so far, hexes appear to allow straight line movement east-west.

I think control/alt left (mac/windows) click should move, if we go with s and surrounding tiles than the hand has easy access.

they should porpbably just remove keyboard movement shortcuts, as it doesn't really fit very well on square keys.

maybe firaxis should make and ship a small usb pad with basically a hexagonal numpad

I've been looking at some screenshots and although some are aligned as you say, many others are "croocked" .

I tried to connect the hexes to show that on some pictures there isn't an horizontal "plane"... sorry if it isn't easily seen.
