Well, he did say South, so I assume it's not North. :crazyeye:

That's a travel report of someone who went on a trip to China and North Korea. I don't think it has anything to do with the massive flooding...

Yeah, I knew it didn't have to do with the flooding - I just found it interesting that there was a Dutch site about North Korea, and most of the Dutch I know are on this team, where we are playing as Korea :)

Nice issue.

How about a game of diplomacy among us?

Niklas, would you like to initiate one if there are enough participants here? :bounce:

I'd like to join! :wavey:

I would be happy to set up a game of diplomacy. A standard game is 7 players, though it can be played by as few as 5 (though it's less fun that way).

It's also incredibly easy to pick up the rules, they are very simple. It's tactics and diplomacy that make the game.

Overview of the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(board_game)
Official manual: http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf

Who else is interested? And dl123465, how long will you be away?

EDIT: From the FREE embassy thread, I take it donsig, peter grimes and Paul#42 are all keen on playing. I could be a playing GM (or sit out if there's enough interest), that makes 4, and maybe dl123465 for 5. Who else is in?

I'm in, I've never played before but looking at the wiki entry it seems to be a lot of fun!.

I was also wondering if anyone here fancies starting a C3C pbem game. I would quite like to get involved in a solo pbem but looking at the pbem forum most games there are based on a scenario, I'd prefer to play a standard epic game like in the mtdg.

 I love diplomacy! I'm definately in!
Well... as long as I don't have to play france, I played it twice and both times I got whacked. But something like turkey or england, I do appreciate that. Nice and safe in a corner...

Oh and niklas if we don't get enough players you'll have to play along... someone who doesn't want to play the game can still be a GM, all he has to do is collect the orders.

edit: As for the PBEM, I already joined one and I don't really like the format. The turns are so far apart that I've usually completely forgotten what I was about to do. But maybe the others are interested?

I'm in as I told before, but I'd like to say that I'd like to have Niklas as a player, too.

Compete with the best means learn from the best ;)

If it works that one players is teh GM also, that's fine with me.
Maybe as a challenge Niklas puts himself into a middle position like Germany? :D

I'd like to play Russia :)

No time for a PBEM.

I'm fine with playing and GMing at the same time. Or someone else can do the GMing. All it takes to do double-duty is trust, since the GM/player must not look at the orders of the others until he has placed his own.

I don't have a problem playing Germany, though I dare say it's not the most challenging nation to play. Check my sig for the DipNES2 game where I was given Germany, it was my first game ever, and I proceeded to a solo win. :)

sirdanilot and Aigburth makes for 5 and 6, not counting dl123465. Just one more to complete the 7-some.

As for a PBEM game, sure why not? :)

I want to play Diplomacy! Not sure what preference. Maybe Turkey or Italy, but I'll take whatever. I do have some experience with the game. The last times I've played were on the judges (computers that automatically adjudicate the orders). I'm not sure how a game is run through here. Would we just pm orders to the GM, use pms for negotiating and use a thread for publishing move results and press releases? Oh, let's try to get seven players if we can.

A Conquests pbem game is something I'd be interested in. The Cage Matches move at a snail's pace if at all.

We could open a thread here, in our private forum.

I prefer using my gmail account to PMs. My gmail address is peter.smith.grimes

No preference to nation - I've only played as England before.

I'm fine with Niklas as GM and player. I don't think he'd have much fun if he won by peeking at the turn orders ;)

Sure I'll play

I'm on vaction from the 20th-26th but will have internet access. Not sure how much i will be online during that time though.

Diplomacy doesn't require much actual online time - it's just emailing letters to the other players (or not :groucho:) and then emailing turn orders.

What sort of a schedule would be good?

The game I was in had about a 72 hour turn time, which worked out ok. I think I could handle faster, but I don't know what's customary.

I usually play games with about one week as deadlines, but if we'd do that the game wouldn't be finished when the mtdg finishes, so 72 hours for normal seasons is fine for me, and about 24-48 hours for retreats/builds. On second thought, I'd prefer Germany, England or Austria (but maybe niklas wants to play that?), but I'd really play anything, except for france of course.

Niklas, how many games of diplomacy have you played? If it's too much to count, then maybe we should let you play in the most challenging position: Austria
Or Italy, if you prefer that :groucho:

Let's list the prefs to get the thing started soon:
Niklas: Austria/Italy (I know you didn't say that yourself, so please state otherwise if you don't want those!)
Paul: Russia
Peter Grimes: I take it you don't want to play England again so anything but england?
sirdanilot: Germany, England maybe austria
donsig: Italy or Turkey
dl: Anything
Aigburth: anything

Please post if those are incorrect...

Then, we still need a GM! Cubsfan or zyxy? Or maybe the General! :salute:
We could also do the following: someone who doesn't participate in the game collects all the orders, and then sends them to me so I can adjudicate them using a nifty little tool I downloaded (RealPolitik) so we can even have cool-looking maps! Or you guys can of course trust me that I will not look at the orders before I write up mine. Or if anyone else has that program, they can do that too, of course (niklas?).

A thread in this forum is a good idea. Wether we use email or pms doesn't really matter to me.

The tool we're using elsewhere on these boards is jDip, it handles everything quite neatly. 72 hours works quite well there, and I expect it to work even better here. It actually seems that longer turn times are worse since it's easier to forget the deadlines then. I don't expect that to be a problem here though.

I have played exactly 2 games to their end, one a standard map solo win as Germany, the other a custom map three-way win as Carthage, and I'm currently well set to win another standard map game as Russia, either solo or 2-way win (I can say that here since my ally cannot read this forum :D). All those games are documented in my sig if you want to check up on my play style. ;)

I'll play any nation, but preferably something I haven't played before.

As I'm completely new to this game I really have no idea what countries are desirable or not, if I have to choose I will say France simply because I'm a francophile :)
