I've played a few games. I started playing back when I was a teenager. Play a lot by mail then. Yes, we wrote letters, put them in an envelopes, put stamps on them and deposited them in the mailbox back then. ;) Played over the phone, face-to-face and through the judges. Never strictly by e-mail yet. Should be fun.

72 hour turns sounds fine with a thread in our private forum for the game. No preference on GM - though I do prefer we have 7 playing so I don't mind if the GM plays. Turkey and Italy for preferences (correctly stated in the list above) but I'll play any country.

I will be Gm and I don't have to play. We played a variation of this in middle school one week.

Niklas: Austria/Italy (That doesn't include any germany or russia anyway!)
Paul: Russia
Peter Grimes: I take it you don't want to play England again so anything but england?
sirdanilot: Germany, England maybe austria
donsig: Italy or Turkey
dl: Anything
Aigburth: France
Cubsfan: GM

Are you sure you want to be the GM cubsfan? If so, then please assign the nations to all the people (following the prefs listed above) and get the game started!

I would suggest the following, to balance for inexperience and cater to preferences:

Niklas: Austria
Paul: Russia
Peter Grimes: Turkey
sirdanilot: Germany
donsig: Italy
dl: England
Aigburth: France
Cubsfan: GM

Everyone ok with this?

Cubsfan, thanks for offering to GM! :goodjob: Do you have the proper tools ready? Ready to start when you are. :)

Looks good, I think I had better start reading up on strategies etc!

Regarding the pbem, so far there are 3 interested (Niklas, Donsig and myself), 4 would seem like a good number, is there anyone else interested?

nice :bounce:

As if I did not spend enough time in this forum yet

:hmm: I am interested but I'm not sure about my civ time... :ack:

Never played a solo pbem yet.
Someone else creates a balanced map for us and we play just like this multiplayer game?
24 hours to play?
Standard rules or some variant?
Start the discussion, I bet there's someone to join the party... ;)

Cubsfan, if you want to, I can find you a link where you can download Realpolitik, or you can google it yourself, or you can use the jDip program Niklas mentioned (but I've never used that so I don't know about it).

And please start up a new thread for the game. Everyone can post their email there, or we'll just do it in PM format. I'd personally prefer the latter, but I'm of course also willing to do it through email.

Hmm, having looked at the RealPolitik tool I must say I really prefer jDip. Of course much of that may be habit, but I think the maps really look a lot neater. Cleaner colors and nicer unit icons.

Yes please provide a link. I won't be at my usual computer this weekend and I'm a bit rusty on the rules. So we can we start next monday night. (It is free to get right.)

I'm looking forward to watching this game!
Sorry I don't have time to play myself.

Maybe if cubsfan ends up needing a back-up GM, I can volunteer for that.

We could make life easy by just playing to the same rules as the mtdg, then it would seem all we would need to do is decide on map settings, pick our civs and find someone to make a map (the map could be the hard part, anyone have any ideas here?).

Diplomacy can be less formal than in mtdg, i.e. I don't see a reason for formal written agreements etc. We could probably move the save along faster also, particuarly in the early game as decisions do not need to be discussed and agreed upon first before playing, at least I'd image so having never played a solo pbem before!

I agree with Aigburth on all accounts. I think we could go with a generated map, no need for a map maker. All settings random? A good player handles all varieties after all. ;)

cubsfan: Here's the link! :)

Sounds good on the pbem, especially if we wait for a 4th. I'm ok with a generated map.

For the Dip game, I'm not sure about the difference between RealPolitik and jDip. Never did anything with either. Here's a link for jDip. I'm curious, what is different in the 2000 rules? I thought Diplomacy was created back in the 1950's and the rules never changed. Guess I'll have to do some research.

Can I join the pbem.

I'm a little confused as to how to start thia.

Just start up a thread and post a basic standard map from Realpolitik or jdip. Then announce the deadline and the cunning diplomacy, backstab and more jolly and fun things will commence!

And when the deadline's there, just insert all the sets of orders you got into the program and post the map. Make sure to double check for mistakes though.

Can I join the pbem.

Sure you can!

I am not bothered about a perfectly balanced map however my concern with totally random is someone getting a completely horrible start. We could perhaps agree on setting it to normal, temperate, 5 million to avoid the wet/warm junglefest and reduce risk of being stuck in the middle of mountains and hills.

We would then be left with Barb settings, land mass/water coverage, civ choice and map size being random. Do we want random map size, given there is only 4 or 5 of us? We could set it to say small or standard, I'm ok either way though.

I looks like difficulty level can't be random, I would suggest emporer.

I would like to get this set up this weekend so comments on the above would be appreciated, I don't mind setting it up myself but if someone else has done this before and doesn't mind setting this one up then please do!

Finally, we have four confirmed, if there are any others interested then please say so soon; Paul are you in or out?
