I never had problems with unhappiness except in the early game, but i think thats normal. I conquered some cities in the mid and lategame and had enough happiness to annex 3 20+ cities and dont build the courthouse cause i wanted the 33% production bonus from imperialismn. I have no clue what you guys do, to get into happines trouble in lategame.
Farms in lategame are not that useless as you all might think, especially not with india. Every farm not only gives food, also decent production and gold. Every additional citizien triggers the "gold/culture/production per 2 citizien" from some buildings.
I have more a problem with UI, that cant get improved in the same way as farms or lumbermills or mines can.
