1) Make sure your city doesnt grow too fast ( some micromanagemt is needed here )
2) get some more goods ( trade with your neighbour, claim them with settlers,...)
3) City Improvements/ civics
the "unhappiness" by overcrowding" itself can't be fixed, its just related to your city's size ( size 10 = 10 unhappy guys )

You can't. All cities will always have X 
due to overcrowding; the number is the size of the city. The only way to avoid it is the Globe Theater, but that's a national wonder. Instead, you need to have at least as many 
to balance them out; if you do, there aren't any effects from the . Luxiries and religion are good for that, and you get a decent bonus from the easier difficulty level; Noble gives 5 free , I think.
