Overpowered Spearmen

The RNG of this game IS very jumpy. That is why I like playing with Rhyes scenario to make all the units have double the HP so no lame battles happen.

You think that's bad?

Once, in the early industrial age, Persia marched a cavalry into a grassland tile on my territory, several squares away from any rivers.

So I sent a cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. My cavalry died.
So I sent another cavalry at it. Their cavalry finally died.

That's seven (7) lost cavalry in a fight that should've been complete ownage. I was foaming at the mouth with rage.

It's enough to make you not play this game at all, when things like this happen on a regular basis.

I've never had anything like that happen, ever. So I doubt it occurs on a regular basis.

You don't have my random number generator, Dell19. I've seen stuff like that happen every other turn, although admittedly on a lesser scale. That one was just extreme.

By lesser scale, I mean maybe one or two cavalry lost instead of seven when taking a lone, undefended enemy cavalry. Still on a fight I should win, though.

Have you modified your RNG in some way or are you saying that it depends on the computer that you are playing Civ on? Also were all those cavalry full health?

No, and yes.

I have not modified any part of the Civ3 code, and I have not knowingly modified any intrinsic RNG in my system. And yes, those cavalry were at full health. I think the first one was elite, too.

Oops, I think I misunderstood your question.

When I said, "You don't have my RNG," it was a roundabout way of saying the my luck sucks ass when it comes to the RNG. I didn't mean to make it seem like I modified it or anything.

Ok I was wondering as I've never seen a cavalry stand up to more than 2 or 3 attacks from other cavalry... I guess you are just unlucky...

Never underestimate the power of the mighty spearman! :spear:

Where would they get a conscipt spearman?

I think you can get them in the Mesoamerican conquest (but there would be no whatever unit you lost there)
You could also use the editor
: :spear: :bounce: ;)

It's enough to make you not play this game at all, when things like this happen on a regular basis.

Yet, had it happened against the AI for you, you'd be happy as hell.

The randomness is an element of the game that improves the gameplay. Nothing wrong with a bit of unpredictability.

A lot of players don't seem to get the idea that surprises are often good.

Losing 8 cavalry to one cavalry unit with no defensive bonuses is a suprise is a suprise I wouldn't want to encounter although I realise the game is set up that there must always be a slim probability that these events occur.

The worst I have ever experienced is my veteran tank losing to a conscript barb on a floodplain.

You know, if a spear is fortified on a mountain with barricades across a river it gets a defense of what, 15( if the way i calculate the bonuses is right, which it probably isn't)
But other than that, it's the RNG
Nasssty rng, we hates it, we hates it forever. (Gollum, Gollum)

I think the problem is that some things just happen too often - the 7 Cavalry streak e.g.

Maybe that the RNG generator of Civ4 should get some statistical methods added to make the results more predictable.

It is just incredible that such a 7 Cav thing happens - the chances are very small, still often people complain. Is it really a problem of the RNG or a psychological one of the people - they will usually NOT complain when THEIR spearman kills dozens of Cavalry or Tanks.
