Overpowered Spearmen

The outcome of a battle seems to be predetermined at the start of every turn (or even before that). In one game I sent a tank (down to 2 HP) to kill a regular pikeman and surprise surprise, my tank died. I reloaded the game and attacked again...the exact same thing happened: my tank took 1 HP off the pikeman before dying. Reloading takes too much time and is simply not worth it because the odds don't change. (Unless you go back several turns, then the odds will change, but I don't have the patience to repeatedly play the same turns over and over again just to win one measly battle.)

If u wanna do the reload thing, u should disable "preserve random number." One thing, I found out that if u change the order, it would change the result.
For instance u have 2 tanks attacking an infantry.
The result by switching which tank is going to attack first will give different results.

I think the direction that you attack from mayy also affect the result although this may just be because the order also changes.

I know on Emperor, my spearmen die to regular warriors quite often - why is that my warriors are so ineffective against theirs? *rolls eyes*

The difference is only one hitpoint and there is no difference at all if you are attacking with a spearman.

I asked because this suggests that it is because of game level. I was just wanting to make for certain that the level has no bearing on odds.

I have incredibly bad luck in battles. Like it takes 15 people for me to kill 3 fortified soldiers. But like 2 or 3 soldiers can kill several of my fortified dudes.

Never lost a tank to a spearman before, but I do have a weird story:

I had defeated the Greeks, and they respawned very close by, so I sent a 3 cav to take out their spearman. This was on a tundra, no rivers, no hills. The unfortified spearman took all 3 cavalry down to 1 hit point and forced them to retreat without suffering one point of damage!

Regarding the different tank attacks:

with preserve random seed, this should not matter - but think of rivers and so on, this changes combat results.

However fighting another battle and THEN doing the "important" one can change the outcome dramatically. This is some sort of cheating. But there is no difference if you attack with a veteran tank or a redlined regular tank first, the seed and the random numbers and your attack/defence values are always the same. (this is a comment to binyo's "For instance u have 2 tanks attacking an infantry.

This is the reason why my friends hate Civilization so much. Disregard any other features, if one can't win with a tank every single time, the game must suck. :(

Well thats his problem and he is probably only using it as an excuse to not play Civ as it doesn't suit everyone...

It sure does seem to be the main beef with people who would otherwise like this game, though. And then they go play RPGs.

Well, I use it to get GL. By switching the order of attackers, I could get GL almost all time I want to (assuming I have at least 10 units attacker with some of them 2 or 3 are elite. Preserver Random On, and of course reloading cheat). If I have less than 10 units, I may do something else, or move something before attacking.

Well the spearman is mighty alright. I lost an elite tank to a regular fortified spearman. Maybe the tank simply ran out of fuel & ammo. The crew jumped out and got themselves killed by the spearmen...

The spearmen are invincible superhumans! They're like roaches: nothing kills them! You can drop missiles on their heads and they live, attack them with ranks and they still live... :D
