Overscan with HDMI

I have an ATI HD Radeon 5800 series graphics card, and I connect my computer to a 32'' LCD TV. From ATI's Catalyst control, I have disabled the overscan option, so my 1920x1080 display fills up the entire screen on my tv.

When I launch Civ V this automatically resets, and the image only takes up 2/3rd of my screen display. If I alt tab back to Windows, the overscan option again disables filling up my entire screen.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue? It's very frustrating, and no other game has ever caused this type of display problem. At this point, I have had to resort to playing in a Windowed mode which is not as fun as a full screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I had the same problem.

Did you add the Civ5 as a shortcut on your desktop? Are you running the Steam version or the disc based?

For me this worked on the Steam version running Win7-64 and using DX9 mode.

1. If running in Steam, go through Steam and right mouse click on Civ5 and add it as it's own shortcut to the desktop. If disc based, you've probably already got it on the desktop.

2. Close out Steam completely if running Steam.

3. Right mouse click on the Civ5 shortcut you created on the desktop and click Properties.

4. Go into the Compatibility tab.

5. Under the Settings set of options look for "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and make sure that is checkmarked.

6. Optional - If not already checkmarked, might as well enable "Run this program as an administrator" too. No idea of this relates to the problem, but I did this when I was solving a couple of other issues with getting the game up and running.

7. After selecting what you wanted under the Compatibility tab go and and click on OK.

8. In order for these changes to take effect you'll need to restart or at least log completely out of Windows and log back in.

9. Once logged back in, start up Civ5 using your shortcut (and not opening Steam first). This will automatically open up Steam if necessary but through this shortcut your settings will be applied.

That should take care of it. I was having the same problem where it was either overscanning or underscanning. Civ5 applies your Windows DPI settings which increase or decrease the size of your text, but unfortunately it also increases or decreases the rest of the screen in proportion with those settings. At one point it actually made mine too big and it was full screen, but I could only see the upper one third of the Civ5 menu. I run on a Radeon HD4870 via HDMI to a 40" Sony Bravia in 1080p so my DPI settings are a little wonkers.

If that doesn't work, I've read some issues with the newest Radeon HD4xxx/5xxx Catalyst drivers doing something weird where it undoes your overscan options if the screen resets itself (i.e. when you start up a full screen program like a game).

I ended up reverting back to an older driver myself just to avoid the issue. I believe the version that was having trouble was version 10.8 so maybe try 10.7?

(this is the Win-7 64 and Vista-64 version)

(or go here and select whichever version you need and then click on previous drivers)

Awesome! So glad to hear that someone else is having the same problem! I can't wait to get home and try this out....Windowed mode is just not as nice.
