2) Would you be interested to hear the results if I played the next 10 or 20 turns from here to see what happens?
lurker's comment: I don't know about the team's members, but I'd be interested in hearing the results. :)

I thought there would be something to do, but the Always War premise is very difficult to overcome. After 10 turns it was clear I was not making a big impact on the game so I kept playing.

To keep with the sprirt of the game, I stayed in AW. I played the first turn just as they did and got the exact same result as you see in the last pic.

I played it to 50 BC or so. I have been down to a one city challenge for almost the entire time, holding Bangalore. I have 3 catapults, an archer and 3 spearman. Been having to do a fair amount of whipping. I am probably taking out 10 or more enemy units for every one I lose, but those pesky Gallic Swordsmen withdraw at one hit point, and they are usually not stacked so I can't send my archer against them. Then they heal up and come right back. I really think the Celts inability to realize that they should not attack across the river is really helping me, as most of them are coming from the west.

I know the AI is into the middle ages as some of them are building Sun Tzu. Not too likely this can be saved, but I may try some more. I can't even build techs since I need to save all the gold for unit support.

My goal is to get a GL from an elite spear. This is remote I know but I can't see how else I could get out of the city, with units from all the civs converging on me every turn. This would allow me to get out another city. Once the second city is set up with 3 spears, 3 trebs and an archer then I could build another, or try to take one of mine back.

I have definitely learned a little bit about AW on pangaea. If I were to start this over, there is no way I would move that settler off a hill. That cow looks awful tempting but the problem is I need to survive to take advantage of it. In this map layout I would say there is no point building workers since your tiles are going to get pillaged anyway. Build walls, barracks, units and settlers. Keep to yourself as long as possible since once you meet someone the war will start. Build defensive units and catapults. If you want swordsman build the city right on the iron. But I would not waste shield on them. Rather build more defensive or bombard units and let them come to you. The only place that might be worth building on is horses, but since the technology is not available that is not an option now.

Behind walls and with barracks you are bound to get some promotions. If I could get three or four cities set up like Bangalore is now I would improve my chances of getting a leader. I would also have an area in the center that might have fewer enemy units and I could pick off the redlines with archers in there, getting them up to elite also.

As far as the other civs, the Sumerians showed up and I did not declare war on them right away, so I probably ruined the AW premise right there. No matter though in about 2 turns someone got them into MA against us. The Chinese were wiped out by someone so at least I was able to outlast them.

@zerksees Sounds like you're putting up a good fight, and I know you love a good challenge. Interesting ideas!!! Thanks for sharing. :)

Disclaimer: this game has been absolutely disrespectfully spoiled from the fact I played the prior SG - and I did use the knowledge.

I've started this anew, under the assumption that to found on the hills would be most benefactory. So I went 3SE on the iron hill to found Delhi, then over the other iron hill for cow #2, and finally on the gold hill for Madras. My QSC picture is attached.

I currently have played 120 turns, the last of which had neither celts nor mayans to bother me with their long weirdo names. I've met everyone (Persia last, on this turn) now and I've got 2 swordsmen armies. I haven't made a great deal out of building TGL because I don't think I'll research anything after chivalry. It's in Calcutta, due in 30ish turns.

Will bring more pictures when I finish it.

Both Celts and Mayans will slowly die fromthat time onto anno domini.
320AD: TGL finishes. The Mayan capital had colossus (COM) and ToA (REL) so I enter a GA. Courts and markets are rushed mostly everywhere useful, MDI massing starts.

Here I do a massive noob mistake: I rely on the AI to research chivalry. This will take at least 30 turns more than I could have done it, and slowed the win by, well, probably 30+ turns.

With ToA, it is easy to keep up with culture and to assimilate new towns. No culture flips happens from that point on. Chivalry is learned around 625AD IIRC, and the map gets underhand.

I never got to the point of being attacked and under too much pressure. I played a very agressive swordsmen rush against both celts and mayans, in that order, and this certainly helped win the game - beside the huge factor that persia was at war vs china AND sumeria for the whole game.

The save is just before winning, so press shift+enter (and hold shift, there's a lot going on you might want to skip).
