P666-04 : Yet Another Trash Game

I was about to suggest shifting the end date for this round to one week later, but now we have 5 saves posted, 3 passes and 2 players still to post. In the worst case, we will have 5 saves posted and 5 saves missed. It's enough data already! We won't have to vote every save but ours anymore.

So, one more day only! ;)

And I have a question for you guys to answer later:
Spoiler :
Am I the only one that lost a bunch of Hwachas? Was the RNG god that mean to me?

Spoiler :
I lost a few, 2-3. Didn't mention since I still got alot of em and I can create new ones every few turns. RNG god definately wasn't on my side though, lost one 98% battle :crazyeye:

Spoilertime!

OK ... well that's 'almost' it.

To those of you who participated in this round, please download and assess the other games that have been submitted so far.

We will give The Chiller a little bit more time, although the lack of posts and non-show last round might put them into the M.I.A. category.

Therefore, we will wait for 'say' 18 hours to see if The Chiller submits a game.

Just to recap, this voting is for the least successful game;
  • 3 votes to the least successful
  • 2 votes to the second least successful
  • 1 vote to the third least successful
You can not vote for your own game - however ratty you think that it might be!

It is your decision how you judge 'least successful'.

Those who did not submit a game this round can not vote in this round.

If The Chiller posts in the next 18 hours, please include that submission in your deliberations.

Please PM your votes to Cabert. Even though he didn't play this round, as Returning Officer, Cabert will get the casting vote in case of a tie. I'd really like to have a decision by Sunday night 'American time' if not sooner.

I am a little concerned that there were so many on the roster who did not play this round - nonetheless, thanks to you all for keeping the rest of us in the loop as to your skips. I am very mindful that 'real life' responsibilities trumps Civ responsibilities, but with a roster of 10 participants, that only 5 submitted a game with the best part of a week to play isn't great. Cabert's off the hook because of his immunity ;). I hope this is an unusual round in that regard.

After the voting, if anyone wants to share their views about the game so far - different playstyles and approaches, please speak up! As far as I'm aware, we have players from Noble to Emperor level, so I would think that there could be some 'education' / 'guidence' / 'suggestion' possibilities.

So for now;
  • If you didn't play, you can't vote. Please feel free to look at the games, and after the votes are in you might have some views that you want to share on the submissions.
  • If you did play, please assess the games submitted so far. We'll wait 18 hours for that last possible submission before kicking off voting.

Nevermind that pass. I thought I was going to have to buy a new Civ4 CD, but i found it after all.

Well, seeing that cabert was moaning about the lack of games to pick I thought I'd go for a late entrant. Got up to 50bc, rushed game. Should be finished and posted in a few hours.

Better late than never.
Spoiler :
I'd never built the Great Wall before but now I am a convert. It meant that I could build up an army without worrying about settling to the east or send out loads of fogbusters.
Basically once Oracle was in I got construction (like most other people), backfilled some cheap techs then went for alphabet and literature (traded for ironworking, meditation, sailing, calendar; still got alphabet monopoly). Didn't build any more cities. Didn't built anything in fact apart from hwachas (and one spear for stack protection and archers for garrison duties) until literature came in when I started to build/chop Great Lib in Seoul (13 turns left to go).
Declared war against Qin in 250bc; took Tianjin (150bc), Nanjing (75bc) and Shanghai (75ad) when I got monotheism for peace. Got a stack of 8 hwachas (4 with accuracy promotion) in Shanghai. Researching MC (running research at 60%).

Spoiler :

Do you still think it was :smoke: to start the GW so early?
remembering that hwachas don't need any resources = no big deal about city n°2 ;)

Anyway, just from the writeup, I don't think it's worth opening the save!
very good round obviously :goodjob:

I don't have all votes yet (2 missing = pigswill, endzz), and we have a "winner".
ojevin has the honor to begin his "trash game event" with the trash game award.

Looking good. Nice solid foundations. A few cottages and some units and it'll be fine.
How many turns? What's the end date?

cabert: seems like I seriously misjudged your game. Still, good learning point tho I'd still like metals for spears (in civ I have a severe horse phobia).

Cabert, thanks for collecting the votes this round.

All righty then, on to 1000AD with Öjevind Lång's game. Three cities and a Settler party, the game has been pretty passive to date - time for more proactive expanision? Probably! Öjevind went in a different direction to the other games, but how can we leverage this alternative take to our best advantage?

We will be seeking the most successful submission this round.

I am exempt from the voting (unless there's a tie) and will collect the votes. Öjevind is exempt from the voting for the round after this one.

Submissions in at latest by early-morning Saturday 'American time'. Please try to participate if possible! If it's not possible, please advise.

For the fourth time, please ensure that when you post your submission that you include your name/handle in the saved game name.

Again, if there's some commentry on the games and submissions so far, I'm sure a bit of chat would be welcome.

While I didn't have great issue with Cabert's opening move, I'm still one that likes to get a Settler out before starting on Wonders - but is this the right approach? Cabert and I were both able to envelope our second cities within The Great Wall, but at what cost? Futurehermit and fbelintani (who really should lose that "Newbie in training" tag on the basis of the strong plays to date imho) each took a far more aggressive approach from the pre-Construction days, but in each case Construction was still some way off. I've seen a lot of interesting ideas laid out - and there will be plenty more I'm sure! :)

Have fun everyone!

(To the P666-01 and P666-02 roster members - :queen: VuDu sends her best. She's been travelling).

For the fourth time, please ensure that when you post your submission that you include your name/handle in the saved game name.

Maybe some players dont know that you do this by pressing alt D. Then you can change your game name.

Edit: Ok I just realised you dont need to do that before saving the last turn, you can just save the name as usual.

I'm going to try to post an attempt, but after that I'm out of play for about 3 weeks. I wont be involved in voting for this time.

I hope to be able to look in on the thread. I'm going to Taiwan so I'll see some Taoist temples, and some Confusion.

Heh. Well, I didn't need a crystal ball to see that my game would "get the honours". Still, all may not be lost. Set two cities to produce (barracks and then) nothing but units, and by the time the hwacha becomes available... who knows? Also, making friends with Asoka may pay off.

I'll try to be more aggressive, but old habits die hard. I will also be *very* intrested to see what more skilled conquest gamers will do with the game I left them.

I did the best I could...I don't expect my game to be chosen here. And it's just as well. It turned out nastily. I increased our territory, but it went badly.

don't worry, nothing is lost.
Your game was just a bit too passive for a conquest game.
Let's go to war!

Played my turns.
Spoiler :
Straight forward teching towards construction type game; built a few hwachas; then teched towards machinery; traded machinery for feudalism. Settler went ne of sheep (missing out the iron :cringe: ).

Declared on Tok in 880ad, captured Tokyo 920ad (lost two hwacha), lost axe to horse archer (avenged), starting seige of Osaka.

Got a prophet sitting around in Seoul, originally thought of burning him on theology but then decided to keep him in reserve for a shrine when I capture a holy city (and theology has been discovered in between). About five turns away from next great person (80%sci, 20%eng).

Overall: not great; not a disaster; in fact a middle of the road type set.
