Can't Firaxis do anything right? After installing the new patch, I get a message at the main menu that my machine is below the minimum specifications (when it isn't). The globe in the background is not diplayed properly; it's completely white. When I try to load up a game, I get a Windows message saying that the application has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. This is ridiculous. Before the patch, the game ran horribly slow but at least it worked.

Have you tried clearing the cache files?
c:\documents and settings\profilename\application data\my games

Maybe worth a shot.

Now it won't even start. I get this error:

I do have DirectX 9.0c, and the latest Nvidia drivers. From the looks of this message, it's trying to tell me I can't play it at 1024x768 resolution, which is how I play EVERY GAME.

Nope.

My specs:

P3 1.8 ghz
Geforce 4 MX440 64MB
512 MB RAM

Just in case anyone else experiences a similar problem.

I got that error too and I have a system pretty close to yours. I just re-installed and then put in the 1.09 patch. It seems to work. But for me it seems only a few things were improved. No memory leak (runs no more than 256mb) and the lag isn't bad even in high quality mode. Plus the leaders avatars actually render, no more cheshire cat. Also the resources show up properly on screen, no more burnt toast by itself. The only problems are, the movies are more skippy than before, and I still have a black map problem in the main game when fog of war is turned on. But in worldbuilder, no problem. I also still have a problem with animals not rendering properly, just their shadows.

Thanks to 1.09 my laptop now crashes immediately after starting a new game. This is just great. I even bought this damn game twice, one for my regular pc and one for the laptop and both are extremely flawed (while both computers are up-to-date).

I guess I'll just wait for 2.0 to be released and meanwhile look for alternatives.

It's probably better for the Moderators to try to compile a How-to guide to uninstalling the patch. That'll help everyone that has troubles.

That's called "uninstalling and reinstalling the game."
