Be warned:

It resets preferences and does not update the ReadMe so I have no clue as to what it does.

Got it. Thanks. Looks like this patch fixed whatever was wrong with my game before, because no lock-ups so far.

Both times while installing the patches, I have gotten this error. What does it mean? It appears the patch still installed, but I'd like to know if there is something wrong.

I'm having a little problem with the patch. It seems that whenever I try to install it, the installer decides to extract the updated files to C:\Windows\Assets instead of D:\Games\Civilization 4 -- the directory where I installed Civilization 4.

I've checked the game itself and it still states itself as version 1.09, yet whenever I try applying the patch again it says its already updated.

Strange.

this patch has made the game even better. its totally smooth for me. wonder movies play flawlessly. city improvements show up correctly. all music plays flawlessly to. if it freezes when trying to update try pressing control+alt+delete. check to see if your firewall isnt blocking it.

The graphics are alot smoother but just alittle less vibrant even on high settings. That's all fine if it runs faster though. The movies (intro) still lag badly, no idea about the wonder movies but I'm sure that some of these were updated with the patch.
And also lost around 75 gold from my cashflow somewhere after this patch which is alittle wierd because they reduced the civic costs that I was using.

Inflation :)

Could be, but it isn't documented as a change unless something else that has changed as forced this cost up. Civic cost 81, inflation 83 per turn.
Pretty miffed by it though. Will have to cut back on the tech research, the costs for them as also been changed. Currently at Plastics. I shall vent my frustration on the nearest civ.

Did anyone else have trouble auto-updating? My game just sits there doing nothing when I check for updates. I can't get out of it without doing a hard reset from the power button, either.

I had the same trouble the first time. The next time it seemed to work. But when I tried to start the patched game, it complained about multiple XML errors, and then hung up.

Eventually I uninstalled Civ 4 completely, reinstalled 1.0 from scratch, and reapplied the patch. Seems to have worked this time.

I wish Firaxis could make its patches more robust. I had to do the same trick of uninstalling and reinstalling in order to get 1.09 to work.

@Shumble: I always get that error message as well when I patch the game, but I'm not sure what's causing it. The patch installer and the game seem to run fine if I just ignore the error message, so it doesn't seem to cause any problems, but it would be nice to know what it's complaining about.

You know this is one of the reasons I start having issues with developers. I heard the 1.52 patch is out, but I can't get it. The reason I can't get it is I don't patch my game system (or run AV on it) except for latest video and sound drivers and the patches absolutely necessary to the OS to run the games. My game box is not on the Internet so I can't do auto-update.

Where is the patch for normal players who aren't willing to leave unpatched, unprotected systems on the Internet?

I have checked 2kgames patch/downloads page and they are still touting the newly released 1.09 patch, and the same for the civfanatics patch page.

I've had no issue so far with this game being buggy it's just the reality of developing for such an open set of standards and platforms that the windows world is, but when I can't run the system except with sound off (found my issues with the game were related to the sound) which caused a CTD randomly right after a wonder is built. I turned off sound and am playing just fine, but I would like to get to enjoy this game fully and was looking forward to trying out this new patch once I heard it was out.

Are you by any chance using a firewall program, that doesn't allow civ4 to connect to the Internet?

I had the same problem until I realized that the "connect to internet?" -popup was active on the background and waiting for response - that's why nothing seemed to happen. And it isn't for some reason possible to alt-tab to that either, so I had to hard boot too.

=> allow network traffic for civ4 and see if that does the trick!

Holy s***! 47 megs! This proves there were a ton of bugs that needed fixin. Patch is almost as big as the game is (not really but pretty big). Downloading now *crosses fingers*
