PDF: Civ4 BtS reference sheet

There's a lower expense if you bypass a unit i.e. you upgrade a warrior directly to a maceman cost less than the sum of your expense if you upgrade to swordman and re-upgrade to maceman. It is not linear. You must check the Vanilla manual. Costs are there.

I'll check that, too.

Another thanks for your postcards:
Volker - good to know where to go for sightseeing in your city, maybe I will go there with my friends in July/August 2008 :)
Mike - I wonder what is the big white sphere in the left bottom corner of your card? I have never seen something like this... ;)
Andy - your postcard is beautiful, I especially love night cityscapes like this one. It's amazing. :)
Husch - seems to be a very nice town. I must check on the map where is it exactly ... ;)

Thanks a lot to all of you.

I regret to have to say that the upgrade costs (pp.46-49) seem to be wrong: so too is the remark on long-path upgrades. The upgrade cost formula is simple; three times the hammer difference, plus 20, in gold. So it does cost less for a "long" upgrade than doing it step by step; you escape the +20 portion for the intermediate steps.
As error examples, upgrading a Trebuchet to a Cannon costs 3x20+20 = 80, not 60 as shown, while Treb to Art'y costs 3x70+20 = 230, not 60+150 = 210 (the steps actually being 80 and 170). I haven't checked all the values shown, but they must, alas, be highly suspect.

OK. I think you need more explanation.

First, I found two errors on p. 47 (I'll correct them in the next 24 hours):
1. Chariot / War Chariot* / Immortal -> Horse Archer / Numidian Cavalry* / Keshik* should be 60 (instead of 75).
2. Catapult / Hwacha* -> Cannon should be 150 (instead of 180).

Important: Values given in yellow circles are without additional upgrade cost 20 gold per unit (see: footnote on p. 47). I did that, because adding values for "long-path" upgrades gives you a correct value only in that way. You pay additional 20 gold per unit upgrade only once (not for every step in upgrade path). So in "long-path" upgrades you save 20 gold per unit per each next step. Upgrading 10 Warriors to 10 Macemans is much cheaper (you will save 200 gold) than upgrading 10 Warriors to 10 Axemans and then 10 Axemans to 10 Macemans.
Second reason is that multiplying value by game speed multiplied (0.67 - Quick, 1.50 - Epic, 2.00 - Marathon) should give correct value, too.
But, at the end you can't forget to add those 20 gold multiplied by number of upgraded units. It is always 20 on every game speed. Add this at the end of calculation.

Formula is very simple:
TUC = N x (GSM x (Cb - Ca) x 3 + 20)
where:
TUC = Total Upgrade Cost
N = number of units for upgrade
GSM = Game Speed Multiplier (not needed for Normal)
Cb = Unit before upgrade cost (hammers)
Ca = Unit after upgrade cost (hammers)

Values in yellow circles given in the guide (let it be "V") are calculated already: V = 3 x (Cb - Ca)
So, the formula is now:
TUC = N x (GSM x V + 20) - for simple upgrades
TUC = N x (GSM x (V1 + V2 + ... + Vn) + 20) - for advanced ("long-path") upgrades

Two simple examples:
2 Warriors -> 2 Spearmans (on Normal Game) = 2x(60+20) = 2x80 = 160
3 Trebuchets -> 3 Cannons (on Epic Game) = 3x(1.50x60+20) = 3x(90+20) = 3x110 = 330

Two advanced examples:
2 Swordsmans -> 2 Riflemans (on Epic Game) = 2x(1.50x(90+120)+20) = 2x(1.50x210+20) = 2x(315+20) = 670
3 Triremes -> 3 Stealth Destroyers (on Marathon Game) = 3x(2.00x(120+330+150)+20) = 3x(2.00x600+20) = 3x1220 = 3660

Sorry to be OT but I would only say that You dj and Bhruic should be prized for your gorgeous job.

Personally I am deeply grateful to you guys :smug:

All 3 ZIPs updated (13th October 2007).
Only minor errors removed.

Standard version (76 pages, A5):
- page 47: upgrade costs corrected (see: Chariot and Catapult)
- page 75: Epic Game Speed turns info corrected (was: 650, now is: 750)

Booklet version (38 pages, A4):
- the same changes on pages: 2, 20

Econo version (both version for econo-printing):
- as above

This guide just keeps on getting better and better. Thanks!

The "AI extras" info on p. 74 (Difficulty Levels) of the 13th October 2007 version has a few typos. The AI should have one less free Worker in Monarch and above than you specify. Maybe you could double-check the handicaps XML file... I'm at work without a chance to look at it right now.

REQUEST:

Can someone get the page of keyboard/mouse shortcuts and make it the same size as that of a mousemat?

Personally I know I will find it useful and I'm sure others will too!

Does anyone know of an online printing service in Europe that could print this PDF cheaply and send it to Sweden?

(I know they seem to have online companies in the US for people without printers but I hardly think they ship to Europe. And when I google I only find printing of photos in Europe)

And also 2 questions regarding the content:

On p.69 in the happiness listing, should not the forest preserve improvement be there as well?

On p.20 under forest preserve listing: is it not so that forest and jungle spreading only can occur on otherwise unimproved tiles, save for roaded tiles where the chance of forest growth is half of the possibility if it is not roaded? perhaps that ought to be mentioned?

Great job,

BTW: I never get to post office ... can I send you a picture of my cat instead of a postcard?

I think that at page 49 the standard submarine is missing in the Naval Unit promotion schema,am I right ?

Beside that, really a gorgeous job , my best compliments !

This is a fantastic piece of work - great information, good layout, beautiful presentation. I'll send you a postcard soon. :)

One thing I noticed though: the 'tech trading' section of the AI behaviour descriptions looks wrong to me. For example, Mansa Musa is labelled as 'very averse' to tech trading, while Tokugawa is labelled as 'willing'. This is the exact opposite of my experience - Mansa Musa actually trades techs even when furious, and Tokugawa won't do it unless he's pleased (and even then, it's rare, for reasons explained in a moment). To me, it looks as though all of these are the opposite way round. Also, the percentages themselves look correct, but I'm not sure the description of their function is right - my understanding of the behaviour in the game is that that number is the percentage of rival civs who must know a technology before the leader in question is willing to trade it away. For example, Tokugawa's number is 100%, meaning he never trades away any technology unless everyone except the recipient already has it (ie. 100% of the other civs). Similarly, Mansa Musa's number is 0%; he'll trade away a technology even if nobody else in the game has it yet. The description you give doesn't sound quite like this to me, although it's possible that I'm the one who's mistaken here.

Please could you clarify what you mean by the ratings 'very averse', 'averse', 'willing', etc., and check your description of what the percentages mean.

All that aside, this is really fantastic; well done for creating it! :)

Hmm, one other thing...in the trade routes section:

Cothon - also +1 Trade Route
Harbor / Cothon - +50% Trade Route commerce

Both correct, but since Cothon line says 'also', shouldn't it be after the Habor/Cothon line? Also, is it worth mentioning that another trade route is available from a UN resolution? A few people have asked before about the maximum number of trade routes in a city, and that's one source that people sometimes forget.

There is an error in the "Culture" section on page 73. For the Cathedral type buildings, it states +50% culture "when its religion is a State Religion". First it's not clear to me if this is really intended to mean "is the State Religion" and it is incorrect in any case, as the 50% culture boost applies to all cathedrals types regardless of the state religion.

I think there is an error in the upgrade times for Cottage improvements. You write the times assume Normal speed. However the listed times (Cottage -> 15 Turns -> Hamlet -> 30 Turns -> Village -> 60 Turns -> Town) are epic. If i am not mistkaken ond Notmale those are 10, 20 und 40 turns.

Very nice work there, dj_anion!

Could you add information to your original post about your plans to review or extend the pdfs? I've already printed two older versions of your reference, and since three weeks I am worried that as soon as I print this recent version, there will be a new one ;) Call me a cheapskate, but color ink is rather expensive and I do not want a greyscale print at any rate for I already know about Aesthetics.
