Peloponnesian War Scenario Development Thread

Scenario Manager's final ruling:

"Spartan Professional Navy" shall be it's own tech. Sparta's "Inferior Navy" could be represented by galleys available at the start.

Case Dismissed:hammer:

Next Case: Brainstorming more techs:hammer:

Okay...Obviously I need to bring some topic top th' table...

Okay, Question 1:
Kryten, how go those units? Can ya put up a preview, perhaps?

Question 2:
What does everyone think techs should be? I'm trying to think, but it's hard to come up with these ideas!!! Should we just ditch techs, as there wasn't much advancement at this time? Or should we set techs aside for now for another matter?

I think we can leave the current tree for now, and maybe come up with a general progression of units. Not much happened during this time, but it is possible to add a couple more techs for the purpose of adding some units.

So you're saying we wait for **cough**KRYTEN'S**cough** units are done?;)

Not if you pretty much know what units you plan to have. If you are waiting to see what is available, then you probably will have to wait.

BTW, I read somewhere that Sparta used Iron rods instead of gold as currency (since they isolated themselves from other Greek influences and wouldn't need anything else). But, they needed a true currency for war with Athens (I'll have to double check my source, if I can, but I'm pretty sure about this). Why not add currency as a Spartan tech? (every other civ would probably already have currency, so it isn't needed).

About Locked Alliances, I checked, and it is impossible to have Syracuse in more than one alliance (to make them allied with Sparta, but at war with the Etruscans, without having Sparta at war with the Etruscans). So, here is what I would suggest making the locked alliance groups:

Delian League: Athens, Crete, anyone I'm missing (?)
(At War with the Peleponnesian League)

Peleponnesian League: Sparta, Thebes, anyone else I'm missing except Syracuse
(At War with the Delian League)

Etrurian-Phoenician Alliance: Etruscans and Carthage
(At War with Syracuse)

Syracuse: Sicilian Greeks (probably not any mainland Italy Greeks)
(At War with both the Delian League and the Etrurian-Phoenician Alliance).

IIRC, Crete was Neutral during the war...

I also think that Carthage, and Eturia shoudl be indipendents- the only real locek alliances would be the Peloponesian legue (sans Thebes, which should eb inidpendent)- the Dleian legue was basically the Athenian empire- even the indipendents, cept RHodes are portrayed as just being unde Athens

During this time, Carthage and the Etruscans did everything they could to stop Syracuse from gaining too much power. It is the reason the Etruscans sent some military help in Athenian the attack on Syracuse (They didn't care what happened with Athens vs. Sparta, but did care if anything could be done to stop Syracuse).

I added the second set of Locked Alliance (Etruscans vs. Syracuse, and Syraucse vs. the Etruscans and Athenians) to represent this. Otherwise, I would have just put Syracuse with Sparta in a single locked war against Athens.

Its not a perfect solution, so it may not be worth while anyway, but I thought I should throw it out.

A very good question.
("Yeah, what's that lazy bugger Kryten up to now he's sober again!" :D )

Very well. Here is a preview of 20 ( ) new Hoplite units which I shall be posting in the next few days. :)
Why so many? Well, when I eventually get round to converting them to Multi-Figure versions, I'm going to need lots of variation as there will be six different hoplites in each unit. After all, apart from the Spartans & Thebans, who wore uniforms and national emblems, every other Hoplite in the ancent world wore exactly what they liked.

Now some of the shield emblems are not in civ colours, some look better on a dark background, and others on a light background. So I have made this chart with the units at their 'in-game' sizes so that you can choose which ones look best when assigned a civ colour.
* Units with vertical spears are based on the Civ3 Hoplite, while those with diagonal spears are base on the Spearman.
* All tunics are in civ colours, with the exception of the Latin/Roman Hoplite, which is always red.
* The Etruscan Hoplite's helmet plume goes across the helmet instead of front-to-back, much like a Roman centurion's.
(Which is where the Romans got the idea from in the first place)
* The three 'draftable' units at the bottom have cheap state issue helmets & shields, and represent poorer class citizens being enrolled into the army in order to make up the numbers.

Note: all names are totally and completely arbitrary.
I strongly urge you to consider re-naming them, depending on their use. ;)

(I'm also knocking out 4 'Heavy Horsemen'....nothing fancy, just the Civ3 Horseman with Hoplite type helmets, no shields, and a couple of them with cloaks)

:jump:

But how can you do them so precisely ? You must spend nights at it...
Maybe you could have learnt 3D instead ? ;)

The guys here should learn how to kow tow to you now ! :goodjob:

Wow, that's a lot of Hoplites!

What about an Epheboi Hoplite with a silver (instead of bronze) helmet. Its just a thought, but I remember seeing an Athenian Hoplite wearing an outfit that definately looked distinct of Spartan Hoplites (I think it was "Rise and Fall of the Spartans" on the History Channel), the biggest contrasts were the lack of a crest and the color of the helmet.

Its just an idea, in case you want to add even more variety :D

What! 20 new Hoplites....and the 8 I had made before....plus the vanilla Civ3 Hoplite and the Numidian Mercenary....making a total of 30 of the damn things....
....and you want MORE variety!!! :suicide:

Actually, it's not a bad idea.
"Leave it with me...." :D

Hoplites are really easy. :)
New shield, new head = new unit
Maybe you could have learnt 3D instead ? ;)
I wish I could! But I just can't get my head around it. :crazyeye:
I need reprograming.....

Amenhotep, have you seen Him yet?

Or Him?

Could be your Spartan and Athenian leaderheads.

Lou, I planned that before I went public with this project.:p:)

Kryten-
:eek:YOU...ARE...GREAT! Thank you so much! Once the Hoplites are up, I'll add them to the civpedia and map, and then you have those 'Heavy Horsemen' to do IMMEDIATELY!:mwaha: (j/k, after all of these, you deserve a little break.:))

One question: I have never seen some of those shield patterns... Did you use some artistic free reign, or did you draw them from a source?

GREAT WORK KRYTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant thank you enough, as this will help some of my own personal prject immenssly as well as help this sceanrio :goodjob:

(and the owl on the Epheboi sheild is great, it looks a biut cartoony, and add a little bit of humour ;) :goodjob:, I live it :D)

I saw that show, and the thing is, they made the distinction only to make the sparatans look special, in fact, the Spartans were wearing the wrong armour (technically, so are Krytens)

this is what your standard Spartan hoplite should be wearing-

and to be honest, I doubt the only differnce between real spartiates, and healots pressed into service on the battle feild would have been that the spartans god the better stuff (perhaps a red background on the sheild), and the fact that they would have been wearing red cloaks, and not anyone else on the Spartan side, save perhaps a few individuals who would risk Spartan rath at the stealing of thier symbol ;)
