People actually play on huge maps?

I can easily spend 30 hours on a normal standards map. I really don't get how you people can finish games in 4-5 hours, never mind the speed runs of 200 turns in 90 minutes

I tried the Huge Earth map when first starting with the game. It was a lot of fun, but turns quickly took waaaaaaaaaay too long, and I was sat waiting more than actually playing. That got boring. The computer simply couldn't handle all the AI units and size of the map.

Do you leave your game on overnight or for extended periods? How do you acquire 30 hours on a normal, standard-paced map?

I do sometimes go out of the game to do other things, but then I hit Pause, which doesn't run the timer. I simply take my sweet time doing stuff, often checking the cities for spy specialists, good builds, whip timings, overflow, whatever really. And take time to think about what to do next. I'm not a fast player, a bit more like Sullla probably, and much less like TMIT and many others.

I also like to check out demographics, stats, city list quite frequently, which also takes time. And crucially, to every turn check for trades and brokering.

How do you play when flying through a game in a couple of hours? Just about everything must be done without thought, I would think. But perhaps you other guys are so much better that everything comes naturally :)

Should also say that my computer is a fair few years old by now, so it takes a second or two just to double-click on a city (which I do often). Perhaps every small action like this really adds up.

Good setting to give play to marginal units and UUs, particularly at the slow speeds.

Playing in window mode is better for the following reason:
If it lags, you should change screen resolution as it restart the game screen and make the anew for a nice flow of gameplay.

By not playing to win, or by playing even though you have won. It's fun to subjugate the whole world and build nice cities everywhere.

I think I have finished less than ten games in all the years that I have played this game.

Also, I do believe Alt Tabbing works just as well.

I play huge/epic with 25 civs.

I've just started one of these...first time ever. I've nearly secured the whole of my continent (just one civ and a couple of islands to clear).

Unfortunately, my land mass has just one oil, offshore! So my next plan will be to locate some landbased oil to claim for myself. I've found two already but they're a long way away and one is in the hands of the next-best civ.

So there will be a large galleon armada to build while a few scouts get busy exploring the known landmasses.

I have a large tundra area to deal with. I've dropped cities there and they're mainly producing military units (generally just granary and barracks with a few lighthouses). Is there anything else I can do with them?

Those tundra cities can really come alive on huge maps with Sushi and Mining spread to them. I also like to spread forest around tundra using forest preserves. One time I was able to spread forests around tundra and get an awesome National Park city. I started with three forests in the BFC and ended up with 15.
