Maybe (surely!) this is a stupid question but...

Should I particularly like one civ (e.g. Japan) because of aesthetic or personal reasons but would like to play with different unique characteristics than its own (e.g. Japan, but industrious and expansionistic), is this feasible with the minimum of changes?
Maybe via the editor? Or what?

Please don't tell me I'm crazy. I already know...

Ciao

I think the Civ characteristics can be changed in the editor.

If you have the editor installed, open it. Select Scenario->Custom Rules, then go to Rules->Edit->Civilizations.... A large window will open. This is the CivIII rules-editor. You should now see the civilizations sheet and a drop down menu reading A Barbarian Chiefdom. From this menu select the civ of your choice, e.g. Japan. The third box from the top left with the title Bonuses lets you choose the civ-specific traits. Change'em to your likes, click OK to make the changes, then save (preferably within the scenarios folder of your main CivIII app). Next time you start a new game choose the scenario you created and you should see your changes in action.

Wonderful!

One can create a real super-race in this way (ehm... this sounds a bit Nazi, isn't it?)

Thanks, guys

Since you can only give a civ two traits, then a super-race isn't possible. You'll only be giving them a set up that is already present w/ one of the civs in the epic game. Of course, you can make your favorite nationality anything you want.

I'm not so sure about the way CivII chooses which traits to use if you check more than two.
I've not really been able to determine if it changes something in the game.
At least it looks funny. ^_^

You're absolutely right!

But my original intent was not to have a super-race but have a favourite race with different traits (e.g. industrial instead of militaristic, etc.)

Anyway I made an experiment like Trixter's (only, with Japanese)...

Fact is, to get the changes (any) you have to pass through the Editor and this means that any changes only applies to THAT map/scenario, so if I want to keep those different traits for additional games I must re-do it each time.
Or I'm missing something?

Thx

Actually, you can make wholesale changes to the game that are effective everytime you play. Open up the editor, then, through the editor, open up the <civ3mod.bic> file. Once this is done, you can alter the epic game to whatever you desire, and it will be that way for each game. You will not need to load a scenario, just start a new game.

Important -> Make a backup copy of the <civ3mod.bic> file, or else you'll have to do a complete reinstall to return to the original game. Just place the copy in another Civ3 foldeer, or change its name to say, <civ3mod.bic_original. Good luck, and enjoy.

I'm not sure if that's what you meant dojoboy, but scenarios you make don't have to include a map, so you can just change the rules and after loading the scenario-file you can change create your new game just as you would otherwise, choosing map parameters, babarian activity and so on...
